Hotel du Vin Edinburgh, Edinburgh, Scotland - Explore & Book

"This opening from one of the UK's best-loved small hotel groups occupies a plum spot near the castle in Edinburgh's World-Heritage-listed Old Town. As with all Hotel du Vin properties, it makes the most of a historic heritage, having been largely converted from a former poorhouse lunatic asylum. The result is as far from a lego-like new-build as possible. Instead, in its tall rooms and multi-level layout, the architecture cleverly mimics the steep, warren-like closes and higgledy-piggledy topography that characterise the neighbourhood. The interior design, too, honours the historic and characterful, but with a contemporary twist. Look out for the vast chandelier made from suspended crystal glasses that shimmers over the lobby. There are classic leather armchairs, internal glass walls, a whisky snug, a nouveau Scottish bistro, and (unlike some of the more showy hotels that have recently opened in Edinburgh) just a smidgen of tastefully subdued tartan. A great example of contemporary Scottish style. Highs The trademark Hotel du Vin comfort factor - great bathrooms and exceedingly comfortable beds go without saying The buzzy but relaxed bistro is a definite step up from your average city centre hotel restaurant, and delivers a superb breakfast buffet A truly excellent wine list, with more choice by the glass than usual Even in its early days (we stayed a month after it opened), service was excellent and attentive One of the best locations in Edinburgh - all the main sights are within easy reach on foot Lows Although it may feel like an independent boutique property, this is a chain hotel The decor throughout is rather dark, with very muted hues in the bedrooms - making winter nights cosy, but a little oppressive in summer There’s no spa or pool, nor any on-site parking (and valet service is not cheap)" - Rhiannon Batten

"It may occupy a former asylum building, amidst the distinctive, weathered stone architecture of the capital city’s Old Town. But the mood at the Hotel du Vin Edinburgh is less mad-house and more Scottish enlightenment. There are other stylish hotels in town, but none with so light a touch — the Hotel du Vin group has a knack not only for selecting old buildings that are just unlikely enough to be interesting, but for decorating them as well, in a style that’s subtly contemporary and respectfully local." - Tablet Hotels

What an amazing trip we’ve just had to Edinburgh, made all the more special by staying at this wonderful hotel. It was my birthday and my husband had informed the hotel beforehand. All the restaurant staff wished me happy birthday which I thought was lovely and they put a candle in my dessert which was a nice touch. We got a good deal to upgrade a few days beforehand which I’m glad we took advantage of as our room was stunning. We stayed DBB and we were very happy with the food and restaurant. All the staff were friendly and helpful, particularly the reception staff. I wouldn’t hesitate to return to this hotel, it is fabulous.

I stayed in this hotel maybe 20 nights a year minimum. But sadly not anymore. They changed the beds in the suites: now there 2 bed pushed up together. Don’t give a great sleeping experience especially if you’re there with the other half. When you advertise king size beds, provide king-size beds not two beds pushed up together where you can feel the separation in the mattress.

Excellent hotel in a great location. Easy walk to the Royal Mile, Edinburgh Castle, and Princes Street. We arrived at the hotel very early, and they took care of our luggage and us, and got us a lovely cup of tea. Just the ticket after a long haul flight. The staff were so friendly, courteous, and efficient. The room was lovely, with excellent amenities, including an iron and ironing board. Also a nice kettle, Scottish breakfast tea, and lovely Scottish biscuits. As an excellent bonus, the restaurant is simply outstanding. Delicious food, excellent wine, and impeccable service. All at quite reasonable prices, considering what you get. Finally, a really classy bar with, of course, an amazing selection of single malt whisky, and some nice fairly private seating areas. Highly recommended.

The property is a 15 min walk from Waverly train station and just minutes away from the famous Royal Mile where all the fun happens. Staff were really nice and friendly, and the room, with a nice view, was quite large and clean as was the washroom. They had a warming towel rack, which was quite a nice touch. Breakfast was a decent spread but quite expensive for what was on offer. All in all, made for a great stay, just quite expensive.

After an overnight flight from Toronto to Dublin and then to Edinburgh, three tired and annoyed travelers having luggage lost by the airlines were greeted at the reception desk by a warm and genuine smile. She laughed with us (absolutely not at us) over our misfortune, guided us to our rooms, and throughout the stay with our hopes diminishing by the minute, greeted us with the million dollar smile each time we went by her desk. The rooms were spacious, clean, bed comfortable, and just what the weary souls without luggage needed. Breakfast was excellent with the hostess in that area also being extremely professional and gracious. A quality stay made exceptional by the best of the best employees.

Google
Such an amazing hotel, great location in the old town. Everything is somewhat close by to walk to really get a sense of history staying in this hotel. I also ate at the restaurant which was delicious. My only complaint is the door slam shut a lot so making the door shutslower would be ideal in the morning. I stayed in the Jr suite which had a tub in the room which I used and I highly recommend. I also had a balcony on the rooftop, which also was amazing in the morning to have sun come in and open my window. I went for amazing breakfast just around the corner. Edinburgh is such a magical city to walk through.

This historic hotel is located within walking distance to many unique shopping and dining experiences. We enjoyed spending our last evening in Scotland, relaxing in our suite, which was tastefully decorated, spacious, and furnished with a very comfortable bed and sofa. The breakfast (included with your booking) was impressive. You may order an entrée off the menu and also select items from a beautiful buffet. Grade A on both. The hotel does not provide parking.  Our mistake for not checking first.  It was a hassle to unload/load at check-in/check-out. They provided a discount for a nearby parking lot. In hindsight, we should have returned the car before check-in and then hired taxis while in Edinburgh. Regardless, our stay was wonderful.

Outstanding service at a charming hotel. Centrally located, our room was spacious and with a soaker tub. Charming courtyard and a dangerous wine list! We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Particularly grateful to Chelsea at the front desk who went well above and beyond to make my birthday - and my booking error- a great one!! Thank you.

Yelp
Came for dinner and drinks one night and drinks on a second night. We sat in the upstairs bar the first evening and I opted for a classic champagne cocktail which was quite good. I loved the décor with comfy club chairs and dark wood. We were then seated and the one flaw of this establishment was in effect for the remainder of our two visits: slow service. It took over 25 minutes once they dropped the menus off before someone came back to the table. Apparently they have the hostess act as sole order taker and sommelier while other people deliver food. It made zero sense as the restaurant was packed. The food itself was amazing, I had the foie gras appetizer and then the 40 day Scottish steak and frites. Everything was artfully plated and perfectly prepared. We then went outside for a cigar and drinks and again it took forever to have our order taken, I had to go in three times to get someone's attention. The other issue is the whisky list is egregiously out of date, half the ones we requested were no longer available. It's a shame because the food really is that good.

Yelp
Love this hotel! Elegant, cozy, great restaurant and bar, and fantastic location. Highly recommend. Can't wait to go back.

Yelp
Great location with easy walking to Bryers Lane and the botanical garden. The bar was excellent with a very good selection of wines. The scallops we ate were so good we came back a day later and ordered the same thing! Hotel is pretty convoluted as it is comprised of five houses joined together. The water pressure in the toilet wasn't the best. I literally needed to flush a few times before adequate water came on. Nice staff, especially Mark and Ben.

Yelp
We had an amazing stay. Charming, cozy room with luxurious bathroom. Staff was outgoing and friendly. The location is ideal -- a few blocks from the city center but just off the beaten path enough that it felt more neighborhood-based. Highly recommend!

Yelp
We stayed 3 nights in the Grange room over a year ago, and I still look back on our time there fondly. Forgive me, but I forgot the name of the hotel clerk/concierge that was so helpful, but he was wonderful. He found out we were in Scotland to celebrate our 10th anniversary, and he made our time there special. He gave us some wonderful recommendations for restaurants and what to do each day. When we return, we hope to stay at the Hotel du Vin once more!

Yelp
A French restaurant in the middle of St Andrews, Scotland. Seemed like a good idea. We were seated right away then waited 20 minutes before seeing a staff member again, and that was the result of one of our party leaving the table to ask for assistance. The ambience was good, the food pretty average. I thought the evening was overpriced and do not recommend.

Yelp
We recently had the pleasure of staying at Hotel Du Vin in the historic city of Edinburgh. Our experiences at the hotel exceeded our expectations. Hotel Du Vin captured the essence of Edinburgh's rich history and offered a unique and unforgettable stay. From the moment we entered, we were greeted by a welcoming and helpful staff, eager to assist us and ensure a comfortable stay. We were told at one point that the hotel was an insane asylum, which added to our appreciation of the unique design and décor throughout the hotel. Our suite room was spacious and decorated with a hint of historical flair. The bed was comfortable and we got a kick out of the cool bathtub that was located outside of the bathroom (not all rooms are set up like that, though). One of the many benefits of this hotel is its onsite restaurant and cocktail lounge, both of which we enjoyed. Note that if you choose not to have daily room service you will be provided with a credit towards a cocktail at their unique lounge (which we did not hesitate to use almost immediately!). Hotel Du Vin is in a great location - between many of the major historical sights of Edinburgh as well as within short walking distance to a number of quaint shops and great local restaurants and pubs. We found that staying at Hotel Du Vin provided a blend of historical charm and modern comfort that enhanced our visit to Edinburgh and we highly recommend this hotel.

Yelp
So this place used to be a Mental Asylum And now for the review... The service, food, standards and overall personality of this hotel make for a solid four star experience. I stayed in one of their sister hotels before so there is a faint whiff of 'chain' but certainly nothing that takes away from the experience. Like I said, a solid four star experience, that's until I strolled into the bathroom for a shower after a cold afternoon in Edinburgh... and all of a sudden 4 became 5. Underfloor heating 'ya wee dancer'!

Yelp
When I found out I was to go to Edinburgh with the Yelp UK team, I was excited. When I found out I was staying in the Hotel Du Vin, even more so. We have a Hotel Du Vin in Birmingham (see review http://www.yelp.co.uk/biz/hotel-du-vin-birmingham?hrid=Ii2m4dKv7F_RbVSgsyP3gg), but I've obviously never had call to stay here as I live in the City Centre. This lovely building located in the old section of Edinburgh is so tasteful and classic, I practically felt out of place! That isn't to say that the staff weren't warm, welcoming and helpful - I'm just not very good at doing "posh"! I stayed here for three nights total and had breakfast on each of the mornings. The rooms were small, but well equipped (Yum... Nespresso machine) and offered all the creature comforts you would want from a hotel. The bath tubs were huge and I still regret not making time to grab a soak when I have the chance. The rain forest shower was also lovely though, so I can't really complain. In terms of extra touches, as well as the coffee pods (which were in a walnut presentation case and replaced everyday) the bathroom goodies (shower gel, conditioner, shower cap and cotton buds) were of a good quality and didn't wreck my sensitive skin or untameable hair - bonus! The breakfast here was Great! With a buffet selection of pastries, yoghurts, fruits and cold items and a full hot menu included in the price of the room - I have no complaints about the selection. When 6 of us went to brekkie together, there was a bit of a wait; but this didn't ruin the experience. The upstairs bar area is delightful for a nightcap and the outdoor area is magical at night; it's all lit up with string lights making it a great spot to enjoy a last beer before bedtime. All in all I had a nice stay at Hotel Du Vin. The rooms were either a bit warm or a bit noisy with the air conditioning on - but the beds were comfy and the decor was lovely. A solid 4 out of 5.

Yelp
3.5 stars! Not quite 4, not quite 3. Things I liked about Hotel Du Vin: - The happiest morning wake up call in history - "GOOOOO-OOOD Morning! This is your wake up call, it's lovely outside, have a GREAT DAY!!!" - Nice toiletries and bath products, and dimmers on the bathroom for ultimate bath relaxation - Nice selection of food in the mini bar, other than the usual suspects - Great location in the centre of the old town Things not so great: - The rooms are TINY. And either really hot (without AC) or really cold (with) - Lots of odd noises from plumbing and the likes - Continental breakfast was amazing. Any of the cooked additions were not - You have to pay for water in your room. This is unacceptable - Prices in general at the bar, in the mini-bar, are really high (£9.10 for a glass of not great white wine - glad I only got one) - Patchy wifi. Not terrible but not great. Overall I would still stay again, once I was feeling flush and could try my hand at getting upgraded to a bigger room!

Yelp
I was sure I'd reviewed here, but maybe I've been reviewing in my sleep (again). Sleeping - now there's a nice segue to my review of staying at Hotel du Vin. I'd stayed here previously, and was definitely tainted by that experience as I'd been upgraded to a suite. I remembered the breakfast was delicious, the bed was comfy and there was a massive claw-foot bath (which I didn't have time to use, but it was nice to look at). This time I was in a standard double room and the difference was noticeable as the room was quite a lot smaller. There isn't really too much else that's different though, there's still a bath (with the shower) and there's a desk if you need to get some work done. The beds are massive and you wouldn't find yourself short of a pillow. On my first night's stay I was in a room on the first floor, behind the bar and was kept awake all night by a weird plumbing noise in the room, and could also hear the person above me moving around their room. Thankfully, getting moved to another room wasn't a problem and the lovely lady on the front desk had it sorted for me in a short while. The room I was moved to was on the other side of the hotel, but sadly had the same plumbing noise - possibly the air conditioning? I can mostly sleep through anything (e.g. Olympic football matches) so it was annoying to be kept awake by this noise. My only other grumble was at breakfast. On the first day, they were able to oblige my gluten free request and I got a bread basket of GF bread as well as GF bread with my eggs Benedict. However, on the second day they were out of GF bread, and still hadn't restocked on the third day. That made me a little sad as with such a fancy hotel, you'd think they'd join the dots and get some bread in. Otherwise, my stay was pleasant and comfortable. The staff were all very friendly and helpful, and the barman in the evening happily kept me going with pistachios which was very kind of him. The staff were really helpful when I asked to move rooms, and I enjoyed being able to sit in the bar of an evening having a drink before going to bed.

Yelp
Du Vin is the wine bar in the beautiful hotel, Hotel du Vin. It's uber classy and ultra chic. My sort of place! There is such a great mix of people in here , professionals just getting a drink with a really laid-back atmosphere. You;re not pestered by sleazy guys spilling their beer on you whilst telling you about their amazing job and fast car etc etc. it's a really classy wine bar, and the wine is chilled to perfection. They really know their stuff!

Yelp
The Hotel Du Vin is located at the end of a beautiful tree lined col-de-sac in the West End of Glasgow near the University. It's the best hotel in Glasgow. It has charm and personality; great service; large comfortable rooms; delicious coffee and a wonderful in-house Bistro and Bar that is romantic; elegant and fun. The food is delicious. We both had the Dover sole with a side of wilted spinach, which was excellent. Highly recommended.

Yelp
A review for the Hotel du Vin (not the Bistro, unfortunately...) I had a truly lovely one night stay at the Hotel du Vin -- and would've stayed longer if time allowed. It's a beautifully remastered property with all the classic touches brought up to high sheen. The room: a well thought out space which contained a sizable bed (comfortable), small desk, commanding wardrobe and flat screen TV. The real hit is the bathroom -- with a full-sized tub and rain shower, higher end shampoos and soaps and fluffy towels/robes. Nothing overlooked -- even fresh milk in the fridge for your coffee! Room service. I opted for room service breakfast and it was fairly standard for the price (about 13 quid) and included a basket of pastries (too much for one person surely!), and then selection of juices (fresh OJ!), a carafe of coffee, yogurt with meusli and fresh berry compote. Satisfying and delivered swiftly -- I found it a worthwhile investment. The extras: complimentary wifi (and it works!), nespresso machines in room, velvet red cake squares at reception, the ladies even called me a taxi to train station. The rate: 89/night (midweek, advance paid booking via web) *authorisation of 50 on your credit card at check-in. Will definitely stay again. Well located to great restaurants, Edinburgh University, great shops, Greyfriar's Bobby. Protip: make a reservation to eat at The Outsider nearby. Very good restaurant and literally a 1 minute walk.

Yelp
Great place to stay within walking distance of town central. Staff was amazing, breakfast had an amazing selection of choices and the rooms were comfortable and quiet. We got there at 8:30 am and they took all of our bags including my husbands golf clubs and took care of them while we went to town center to look around. Highly recommend this stay for anyone who wants to see Edinburgh and be centrally located.

Yelp
It's too bad you can't eat the Posh here. Beautiful room, nicely decorated, with an upscale cozy lodge feel. Unfortunately the food and service leave a lot to be desired. The food was edible for sure, but at the prices I would expect exceptional, or at least very good. I had the French onion soup to start, as it was a cold, rainy night. When it came I thought I was in for a treat, as it was covered in melty, gooey gruyere cheese. Sadly the soup underneath was underseasoned, with none of that sweet oniony goodness and deep rich beefy flavour that comes from mountains of slowly cooked onions and homemade beef stock. My main was a ribeye, perfectly cooked and tasty, if a bit on the thin side (I think that's the style for steak in this country). The Jus on the side was bland and overly thick. The chips on the side were nice though. For dessert I chose creme brûlée, as it's a nice indication of quality. The custard was creamy and the perfect consistency, though it was cold. The top was overly browned and too thick, ending a chewy mess stuck in my teeth. Not the worst creme brûlée but well below the best. Finally I have to call out the poor quality of service. We were served by several different waiters throughout the meal, with the first having to read the specials off her crib sheet. This in itself is forgivable had the dishes not trickled out of the kitchen. Also my friend and I both ordered coffee which never came. And finally after waiting in front of empty plates and glasses for 15 minutes or so, with two of our party having departed, I had to flag down yet a different waiter for the check, which I then had to send back to have the phantom coffees redacted. Overall a poor dining experience, and quite a disappointment. There are better ways to spend your money.

Yelp
This review for the bistro only, where I had dinner one Wednesday evening recently. The food served is French with fairly high prices for both food and wine. There is a fixed price menu some evenings, but it wasn't very appealing. For the price we paid the experience was poor. The issues were: The menu is littered with spelling and grammatical errors. They undercooked a friends steak and the meat itself was of a poor quality. The main courses do not come with vegetables- these are an extra side. They served a really stodgy profiterole. On the plus side, they did address the issues when we raised them and comped the deserts for the two friends who had the bad food experiences. There is so much better both in the Old Town and in Edinburgh generally it just stood out as poor value for no better than average food.

Ate their for the 2nd time on Friday. Stunning food, I had the smoked eel and then the pork shoulder! Two great dishes!! Also sampled the beef and snail salad! Superb!!

Yelp
There is a sense in which this place was on a hiding to nothing, from the outset, as we'd had a simply excellent meal, the night before, at Cafe Fish, with the same group of people, visiting for the Six Nations rugby. It seemed unlikely that we could hit those heights, two nights in a row. And so it proved. I had a disappointing spinach souffle, to start, then followed with the steak hache, which was good without being particularly memorable. Service was confused and confusing, with a lot of staff overlapping and the pace of delivery rather pedestrian. It was a shame as I really like the venue. It's an excellent marriage of old and new, and the place has a lovely vibe. Their wine list is as impressive as you would expect. It's priced as fine dining, but the quality on offer is nowhere near that. Overall, we said: "Bistro du Vin certainly met our post-match needs very nicely, but it didn't quite hit the heights, for me. While the setting was lovely, and a jolly good time was had by all, I'm not sure the quality of the dishes was all that it could have been."

Yelp
Hotel du Vin is one of the newer culinary, wine orientated kids on the block in the old town, and it certainly looks the plush part, with the immaculately finished, rustic, French kitchen-esque restaurant space, teamed with a really tasty, and also French themed food menu. I've been here for dinner a couple of times, and a couple of dishes have really stood out, namely the crab and chips, and at times you can't beat a good old rib eye steak, which is also a brilliant option here. The dishes stick to fairly classic formulas, but have enough variety to be universally people pleasing. Prices are reasonable for the quality of the food, although they definitely couldn't be classed as cheap. The wine list is extensive, and there's a mezzanine bar and a cool whisky snug where you can enjoy a drink afterwards, plus a cigar shack if that's your thing.

Yelp
I went for lunch here after they sent me an email with what seemed like an amazing lunchtime deal. And as much as it kills me to quote my mother, if something seems to good to be true then it usually is. That was definitely the case here. Don't get me wrong, it was nice. But 'nice' also applies to your friend's boring girlfriend, or the jumper your gran gives you at christmas and is desperate to hear your opinion of. First off, I think it's really cheeky when restaurants charge you for a basket of bread. Especially when there's only one slice each, it's not even that fresh and it costs £3.50. For that price i could have bought myself a glass of wine, and i know which one of the two i'd have preferred! We were ordering from the 'Du Vin Or Not Du Vin' menu, which gave us the choice of 2 courses for £10 a head, or 2 courses with wine for £15 a head. At first glance, it all sounded very tasty and exciting... but it was effectively just a list of your bang-average pub dishes described over 4 or 5 lines, with at least half of those words being in various foreign languages. My boyfriend had steak and chips (which, incidentally, wasn't cooked the way he'd asked for it) and I had mussels and chips in a really bland cream sauce with some green bits in it, although if they were herbs I couldn't taste them... now you understand why they have to dress it up so much on the menu! In the ten days since we ate there, I've completely forgotten what we even had as a starter - read into that what you will. Long story short, I ended up paying almost £50 for a meal that they make you think will cost £30. More annoyingly, it was a meal that I could have got in pretty much any of the half dozen pubs within 20 metres of here, for a fraction of that price and with much better atmosphere. I don't mind paying a lot when it's actually worth it, but I just got the feeling here that they were trying to get money out of you at every available opportunity, with all their sly little extras.

Yelp
I wanted to save some of my review for Hotel du Vin to outside of the Yelp event that I attended recently. It first caught my eye with the window display of wine casks that made me what to squash my nose up against the window in an alcohol-induced frenzy, but I was with people, too sober and too self conscious with a dash of 'how clean are those windows' thrown in to boot. Nonetheless, it had reached my subconscious that I wanted to return. Little did I know that this would be via a Yelp event, but it was a great introduction to a place that I definitely have plans to return to to test out their menu. We were delivered canapes as part of a wine tasting event - if that is the quality, then I won't be disappointed, especially in the cheese stuffed profiteroles... sinfully good. We were given a nice little tour of the hotel - the snug, a nice wee place to indulge in a whisky with friends (yup, I can picture long nights of drunken scheming and finagling taking place in here), the restaurant complete with wine theme, and a fantastic overtop bar with a great view of the diners below. For the somewhat closeted geek in me - loved the wine pull (treat wine like beer! Imagine the lockin fun with that!), the seriously over the top wine tasting room with custom built tasting station (and very bad fake stone wall paper). And that brings me to the parts that make me cringe - the fake stone wallpaper took a rather funky tasting room (next door to cellars I would dream of owning) and added a layer of crass. The chandelier made out of nasty looking wine glasses just further contributed... and the mural of Burke and Hare in the function room was just seriously awful. If those were accidentally burned in a freak accident, I wouldn't miss them. That would leave the much better parts of Hotel du Vin, including the super lovely staff (Nan the manageress and Seb... a fantastic speaker, raconteur and sommelier) to do nothing but impress.

Yelp
The Hotel du Vin is such a cooooooooool place. The setting is gorgeous, they have a really swish smoking shelter with a fire which makes me want to take up smoking (joking!), an amazingly fabulous whisky snug, and a cool wine glass chandelier. I booked in here for afternoon tea with my mom, attracted by the interesting G&T(ea) option. We actually decided on the bubbly accompaniment, but the cocktail did sound tasty. We arrived to a lovely little setup. There were two parties who had booked in for afternoon tea and we each got our own little tucked away corner to enjoy ourselves. This was great because it allowed us to chat and stay for ages. The downside started when we waited quite a while for the very rushed/harassed bartender (on a Monday afternoon) to come and ask how we would like to receive our tea (we asked for the bubbly last, but got it first). We then waited for what felt like too long again before actually receiving our tea and nibbles. The nibbles were... meh. The sandwiches were fine though pretty uninspired. Ham, cheese, and salmon. That's it. We then each had two scones (one fruit and one plain). I never understand when they give you two full-sized scones and often wonder if it's a cheap way to fill someone up? The dessert tier was pretty lacking. I tried everything and while half of the desserts didn't seem terribly fresh, the other half were just relatively tasteless. So, the setting was fantastic but the actual afternoon tea itself left me feeling pretty "meh" about the whole experience. I would come here for a drink but would look elsewhere next time I feel like afternoon tea,

Yelp
This will be our third time eating at Hotel Du Vin and Bistro. The first was fabulous! Great service and good food. The second time, I got engaged and the don't quite remember the food but remember the service was fabulous! Unfortunately, on our last visit. My partner and I wanted to share this great spot where we got engaged with our family and friends. I want to first say our original reservation was for five close family members. Later grew to 19 and then down to 15. The staff was understanding and eager to accommodate. We were told that because the size of our party grew, we would have a restricted menu. All fabulous selections. Service was great and food was good until.... Some drink orders were missed and needed reminding. Entrées were brought out with one of our guests not getting their order. Someone reminded that they missed a order. The server brought out the entrée and it turned out that what the guest ordered (sole-fish) and revived another fish order (trout - fish) served the same way. When asked about the order were told that we did not order trout and wanted sole. We were told that they served a fish entree. That is like saying we ordered beef and got pork. Let's leave this by saying the staff in our mind did not handle the situation in a profesional manor and were arrogant in their unsatisfactory response. Our guest who did not get the sole was not delighted with their entree and all agreed that the service was not up to par. I would find it hard to recommend Hotel Du Vin and Bistro to any of our future friends and Family that will visit Edinburgh.

Yelp
Don't know what the food is like, but I have to say as a review on staff. 5 stars! Was recently in for a Christmas Fair and must say, really nice people who work here! Also I really like the atmosphere and design of the Hotel. The entry way is a really nice touch and is pretty at night! I'm surprised I hadn't been in yet! I recently booked my parents into a hotel, but now that I just went here I wish I got them a spot here so I can visit!

Yelp
Hotel du Vin has got its share of problems, we have attempted to go here on many occasions. a few months ago they had a electrical outage, so we couldn't. This time we went during the Fringe. Very nicely they dotted their courtyard with parasols (read: rain shelters) and in addition they also erected a cigar booth. This set up allowed for smoking outdoors, whilst having the feeling you were indoors. As a smokers this is a luxury. Unfortunately their 'attendant' for the courtyard was a new guy. He was very sweet and helpful, but missing the attentiveness and the efficiency. Long waits for menus, drinks and the final bill. Good thing we were not in a real hurry to catch a show, as we already had ours. But that could have been quite disastrous if we were. I am sure the waiter will improve - and on a consequent visit I shall reflect that in my rating. For now it was OK.

Yelp
Solid 3 stars but for the Bistro as not stayed here. Food is decent enough. Not wow but ok with usual stuff like fish and chips, steak, chicken, etc. some dishes come with a side, others don't so read descriptions carefully. They do gluten free but more amending dishes rather than creating the same as menu but just gf version. Service for me is patchy. First time I went then bill was wrong three times. Second time it was ok but they are never sure if they have gf bread or not. Fine for a voucher but I wouldn't pay full price.

Yelp
I went to Hotel Du Vin with my coworkers for our regular 'Retreat' ie. a day we go out of the office, usually somewhere fun, and give presentations on what we're up to. So I have not stayed here but I must say the facilities for presentations/meetings are excellent! We spent the day in the Burke and Hare room which is decorated with lovely murals and prints along with some excellent old furniture. I wasn't fond of the window that faced reception though, as everyone coming and going could see our 'constructive criticisms of one another' (friendly bickering!) Our lunch was delicious. The meeting package did not give much choice but fortunately everyone was happy with what was available. I had a smoked haddock fish cake with poached egg which was amazing and surprisingly filling. The desserts weren't up to my tastes, but I shy away from overly sweet foods, so although my Rum Baba was divine after several bites my teeth ached! Overall it was a nice relaxed day, thanks in no small part to the surroundings and excellent service.

Yelp
My partner had a voucher for a meal for two and we went on Friday night. The welcome at the door was great and we were shown to a lovely table. The waiter, sommelier and manager were all really friendly, knowledgeable and friendly. Our food was lovely - we had steak tartare and pate for starters with a lovely wine and then had a fabulous plate of hot shellfish and crustaceons with chips. I didnt like my dessert but then I was trying something new and my partner finished it very happily. We had a lovely evening and great atmosphere.

Yelp
Had dinner here with the in-laws a wee while ago to celebrate the OH's birthday. The food and wine were lovely, the service was prompt & friendly but I found the restaurant a bit dark despite the high ceilings. There's not much natural light & even though we were sat by the window I almost felt like I was sitting in the dark. Next time I'd try the upstairs bar or if it's warm enough, a table in the courtyard.

Yelp
I hadn't been to the Hotel du Vin Bistro before, as I typically avoid hotel restaurants; they are frequently both lazy and expensive, depending on their captive audience of business residents dining on expense accounts. However, we had a party of five during the festival, and other choices were in short supply. We booked for 18.45, and on arrival we were shown to a very nice semi-private area with a view on the kitchen. Really nice. We made our choices from the supplied menus, noting that the food was, indeed, quite pricey, with separate sides required for most main courses. On her return to take our order, we were informed by the very pleasant waitress that several items were no longer available. Surprising, given how early we were, and disappointing that we weren't informed before choosing. I had selected the steak haché, but the rösti that was meant to accompany it was going to be replaced with fries, and I didn't want that. According to the waitress, the batch of rösti made in the morning was sub-standard, and there was insufficient time to make more. The standard of food was generally good. The starter of French onion soup looked and tasted delicious, with a thick crust of cheese, and the Heritage Beetroot and goat's cheese salad received a quite positive reception. A main course of seared salmon on a bed of warm salad niçoise delivered moist salmon with a lovely crispy skin, though the salad was rather over-filled with olives for my taste. Our accompanying wine, while good, was also expensive. The disaster, though, came when we ordered petit fours with our coffee. We were told that we'd get three pieces, so we ordered three portions between us. When they were arrived we were presented with three identical plates, with three pieces of deep fried Mars bar on cocktail sticks. The appearance was awful, the taste was worse, and we had them removed from the bill. Aside from the prices, the rest of the meal had been reasonable, the surroundings and service were good, but the petit fours left a very bad taste. Unfortunate end to a pleasant evening.

Yelp
What a Sunday Brunch! Great little place in old town... Burger is spot on.

Yelp
A great Bistro attached to the Hotel, they offer a very extensive selection of dishes. The atmosphere is bustling yet manages to maintain a cozy charm.

Yelp
The restaurant in Hotel du Vin is one of those places where you either have a really lovely evening, or you leave feeling slightly diddled by the complex deals on offer. My recommendation would be to go, but make sure you get the timing right. Just off the main road leading from the centre of town to Edinburgh University's main campus at George Sq, you could be forgiven for walking past the hotel without even realising it. But once you're in there, the modern style blends nicely with the traditional brick leaving you (quite nicely, it must be said) somewhere between a French chateau and a George St bar. The food is good, not spectacular but certainly good. And the home-made ketchup with the burger is certainly worth a try. However, try not to be fooled by some of the discounts on offer. Occasionally, there is a great deal to be had consisting of two starters, two main meals AND wine all for around £30. However, often when there is a deal on you must be wary of the limitations. Some offers only include selected parts of the menu. Don't get caught out by paying more for sides and even bread. But whether it leaves you with a good or bad taste in the mouth, a dram and cigar inside the bothy in the courtyard will put a smile on your face.

Yelp
This place blend traditional Highlands with modern architecture. From the minute you walk into the courtyard you know you are in good hands. Outdoor seating plus a Cigar Boothy in the corner with a fire and heaters to drive off the Scottish chill. Inside there is the Whisky Snug and an upstairs bar all with deep comfortable leather chairs and sofas. There are plenty of corners and nooks to hide away in while you are cuddled by the chairs. Lovely dinner in the private dinning room. A little pricey but great staff.

Yelp
Besides delicious food, beautiful decor and gracious service, the hotel is VERY good to parents of small children and babies. My stay in Edinburgh was many times better because of Hotel de Vin's fantastic staff.

Yelp
i popped in here the other night to grab a quick drink before an elite event. i've been to the bar a few times before, but it was nice to re-visit as it had been a few years since the last time i'd been in. like other hotel du vins, this is a fantastic hotel! it's located in what used to be edinburgh's insane asylum, so a bit of historic bit totally refurbished to a 4 star hotel. hopefully without any residual inmates from the past!! the bar is on a mezzaine level above the main restaurant, making it rather small but as cosy. i quite like it and it's never been busy when i've been in so i've always been able to get a seat. there are so cosy sofas for sitting and also a few small tables with chairs dotted about as well. it's all keeping the general design of the hotel which is dark colours, leather and exposed brick. very chic indeed. as we were only there for a quick drink, i got a whisky sour which my drink mates had a margarita and a bloody mary. the waiter was very friendly and after taking our drinks order brought over a pot of olives and some nuts for nibbling on. drinks arrived promptly as well and i can confirm my whisky sour was top quality. it went down a treat and i was sad not to have the time to get another! similar comments were made of the bloody mary and margarita. as time was short we got the bill and were on our way shortly after the drinks were done, but overall a lovely visit and i'll need to make a point of getting to hotel du vin again soon!

Yelp
For my first review this restaurant I gave a lousy 2 stars, yikes! But I've since returned a few times and the food standards have improved. Last night I went there for dinner and selected the moules mariniere for starter - which was lovely, no gritty mussels, rich sauce and fat juicy mussels. For main I ordered Dijon chicken with kale. The waiter asked if we'd like additional potatoes or fries with that, as it was not served with carbs, so we opted for potatoes, which was an extra charge. Ok, fine - but this is where I dropped the final star: The main course arrived with delightful creamy mash potato and no kale?! I notified the same waiter and he rushed to the kitchen to find out the error. It was a menu misprint! The head waiter apologised and said the additional potatoes were on the house and he'd arrange for a salad to replace the kale (they must have been out of kale). A green lettuce salad arrived shortly after, but is was a little uninspiring and didn't compliment the main course chicken. After eating two helpings of potatoes, we had no room for dessert, which is probably a good thing anyway! So yes, I'll be back - the food has improved greatly, well done guys!

Yelp
Romance in hotel form. I enjoyed my stay at HDV Edinburgh and here's why: 1. It's a great location - just a few minutes walk from the royal mile, a couple more to Edinburgh Waverley train station and most of the nice shops, bars and restaurants. 2. It's quirky and old and probably haunted (didn't see/hear any ghosts though, damn). It used to be an asylum, apparently. That's creepy but quite cool. 3. Each room is different so I can only speak for The Grange room, which we were in. I'd read in reviews that it's really worth getting the superior room, so we did (not much more expensive, but it is much bigger and you get the roll top bath! 4. Lovely decor (lots of Scottish tartan) and it's one of those rooms where the bath and the shower are basically in the room. 5. Good heavy curtains that block the light out when you want to, room was nice and light the rest of the time. 5. Confirmed bath and shower are awesome. I had at least 4 showers in 24 hours, just because. Nice bath related products. Great towels, even better dressing gowns. 6. Very, very comfortable bed with lovely linen and good pillows. 7. Bar that's open 24/7 for guests - great place for a chill, and an early morning champagne cocktail... 8. Fresh milk in the fridge, fancy coffee machine in every room. Just a nice touch. 9. Wifi was free and worked quite well. Two things that needs to improve in order to shift it to a 5 star for me: 1. THE AIR CON / WINDOW situation. The room was really, really warm for the duration, even though we had the air con on an arctic 16 degrees, it felt like Marbella in the summer. The windows were french ones, leading out onto a little balcony. Problem is, with the wind, the doors couldn't be opened without them banging. A little heavy doorstop would make all the difference here so you can at least wedge it and get some fresh air. 2. Mirror situation. There's a full lengther (thank you, from all the women in the world) and there's a mirror in the WC. Neither of them are especially well lit though, and that makes applying make up hard. I did mine with a compact sitting on the bed. A decent mirror, with good lighting, would be appreciated by us ladies. Oh, and a hairdryer with a longer cable.

Yelp
Great hotel! This is a great hotel, just a 10 minute walk from Edinburgh castle, 20 minute walk from Waverly station (take a cab if you have bags, as it is uphill) and close by to some of the large businesses of the area. The room was fantastic, great size, recently refurbished in great style and the price was even better! I booked online and used their summer saver type rate, 89GBP B&B. My only disappointment with this organization was that they would not honour my customers negotiated rate without using their travel agent. Not a problem this time as the summer saver was the same price as my customers rate, but out of season I may have to use the Hilton instead :(

Yelp
Bistro only: went for a late lunch in the court yard. Slow and sloppy service, food pretty decent, overpriced though. Hopefully hotel guests are served better.

Yelp
This is a nice enough hotel with excellent service, but I felt it was way overpriced for what you get. I was staying with a platonic friend, and they only offered rooms with one not very large bed. The internet connection (wifi and cable in room) is pretty slow and unstable, and cuts off every 30 mins.- I couldn't check or send email the whole time I was there (3 days). There are only 4 or so channels on the tv, no movies. No gym or spa, yet the price was $250 a night. The food in the restaurant was nothing to get excited about. The bar was quite nice, with a very efficient and friendly bartender who also was our waiter in the restaurant. The location is pretty good. It's an ok place overall, but for the money I would go elsewhere.

Yelp
Menu will not knock your socks off, but the food is very well prepared and always consistent and reliable. That alone is worth an extra star. Plus they know how to make a decent cocktail. Cannot beat the location, especially in August.

Yelp
Never fails to impress! Lovely food, better wine, delightful staff! So friendly and helpful, I guess you're paying for it but that's why you go here! You know what you're getting, always good, lovely atmosphere, well done hotel du vin.

Yelp
It may be situated in the converted remains of Darien House Hospital, Edinburgh's first mental asylum, but Hotel Du Vin Bistro ensures that the minds of its diners will be firmly focused on just one thing - quality French fare. The interior is a delight - from the tasteful, subtle decor to the high ceiling and ever-visible wine cellar, every nuance of comfort and quirkiness has been carefully considered. Once comfortably seated, I was whisked away on a culinary adventure that began with a perfect and deliciously soft soufflé, which proved meltingly smooth and was accompanied by a luxurious Isle of Mull Cheddar sauce. The recommended glass of picpoul de pinet, with its citrusy vivacity, proved the perfect partner to the starter. To follow, the sublime veal Parmigiana, comprising tender meat gently wrapped in a delicate, crisp crumb coating, was served with portions of flavoursome side vegetables that had clearly been given as much attention in preparation as the veal. Finally, the crisp layer of caramelised sugar atop my creme brulée yielded to reveal a creamy treat beneath, providing the most luxurious close to our meal. The near endless knowledge of the friendly and professional staff proved beyond doubt that this is a quality establishment - one that I will be visiting far more frequently.
