I've just returned to the wet and wild delights of Manchester from a night away in York at the Hotel Du Vin with my dear mama. Now, we stayed on the Winter offer as, naturally, rooms in this hotel chain can rack up an almighty bill. This gave us our room and a two course dinner from the prixe fix menu, something which we had taken up before in the Leeds Malmaison and thoroughly enjoyed.
We arrived early in the hope of dropping our bags off before hitting the sales and the staff were happy to oblige once they reached the reception desk. The decor of the Hotel Du Vin is in keeping with the others in the chain; dark but cozy and comforting. Behind the reception desk is a wall of clocks - of course, you might think to yourself, showing times of other countries across the world. No no good Yelpers, these clocks simply show you the times of other counties. Not quite as exciting seeing as we're all in the same time zone!
The hotel isn't very far from the centre so we walked into the centre of York and back again quite comfortably, marveling at the amount of flooding near the centre, and taking a walk on the famous wall. Returning to the hotel in the evening, we were shown to our room and left to our own devices. The room was fine, with lovely sleigh beds, and the bathroom was large and heated.
We were both looking forward to dinner but this is where The Hotel Du Vin loses some stars from me I'm afraid; service was shaky from the get go as, after we were given the prixe fix menu and main menu, we were told we needed yet another menu for our offer. However, this menu was exactly the same, so seemed a bit pointless and as if the staff hadn't quite realised or paid attention. We ordered a bottle of chardonnay but were given sauvigon, the reason given was a conflict with suppliers and only explained when prompted, which lacked integrity and left us feeling a bit deflated. My belly pork was lovely and soft, with crispy crackling, delicious potato, and black pudding, but followed with a fairly lacklustre chocolate & chilli cheesecake. Mum's cod wasn't my cuppa due to my dislike of fish, but her apricot frangipane was stolen and devoured in no time.
On check out the wine issue arose again when our bill didn't add up. This was eventually resolved but it did feel as if we were paying for someone elses mistake with our time - the shops were calling!
I would consider staying here again on an offer but York does have other hotels. Ho hum.
