My company booked me into this beautiful hotel (and objectively it is beautiful) for a business trip. I arrived in the middle of the night after a long journey and was welcomed by a friendly and courteous receptionist. He directed me to a lovely, clean room with what turned out to be a stunning lake view. After a long journey I wanted some herbal tea before sleep but there are no drinks making facilities in room in this hotel. Nor (as is the case in many Swiss hotels) in the communal areas. I went back to reception and the receptionist kindly got me some hot water. This became a theme...||The room in daylight was spotless, well maintained. The bedroom area was very good. A comfortable bed, chairs, table ,desk etc. A chandelier even, and pretty ceiling mouldings and sconces. But somehow so clinical. No prints on the walls, nothing to alleviate the white paint. The bathroom was spotless but dated. The bidet water had more pressure than the tap fed / hand held shower. I say hand held as the bracket in the bath that was meant to hold it was eye level for me (I am 165cm / 5ft 5.5) so no use. The shower ran alternately scalding hot or freezing cold and anything from a dribble to a trickle depending on how many others were using the water. ||Internal soundproofing is not great - though this is an old building so allowances have to be made. The bedroom/bathroom floors are wooden/tiled and this is seriously unhelpful as the hotel seems to have a lot of international coach parties staying all of whom apparently need to perform clog dancing routines whilst packing. This goes for at least 45 minutes before they leave at 5-6am (to be fair this was 3 nights out of the 7 I stayed so I did get some sleep). ||I was staying for work, so work I was expected to do. But the WiFi....... I don't know where to start really. I don't think I've ever stayed in a hotel with worse reception. It constantly dropped out no matter what I tried or where I attempted to work / zoom / call from. On my last evening I walked to the nearby McDonalds to use their wifi and it was honestly better there.||The food - this was variable. The meals served to my business were pretty good. Swiss cuisine isn't particularly exciting IMO but everything was good quality and well cooked, especially fish dishes. And if you like desserts you'll be in heaven. Breakfast was not the best - buffet style and the hot self serve (eggs, tomatoes, etc.) was empty for over 50% of the time I tried to use it. There is a decent selection though of breads, pastries, cheeses, fruit and yoghurt. The orange juice is the worst I've tasted - cheap and sour. the coffee was excellent though.||The communal areas in the hotel - I don't know what to say again. Formal and elegant work as words - but like the bedrooms they are a little lacking in 'something'. The outdoor areas by contrast are well done, and the views across the lake to the mountains beyond are incomparable. These views were shared by my room balcony, and are what captured my heart.||The walkway along the lake that runs alongside the hotel is level, safe, and stretches for miles. I walked for 6-7 miles in each direction and saw 'beaches', marinas, swim spots, museums, gardens, cafes etc. This was a big bonus for most of the time, though on the weekend evenings groups of drunk teenagers stationed themselves directly in front of the hotel shouting, screaming and being sick for a good few hours. This didn't happen in the week though - then it was very peaceful.||The bar/restaurant is closed a lot more than you'd expect for a hotel of this class. Two nights the lights were off and it was empty just after 10pm. On the Friday evening it closed at 1030pm. This was an issue for me, as I wanted a warm drink, and with no facilities in room that meant another trip to reception to plead with the staff there! It is also one of the only areas with seats/tables to work at, other than your room. I'm used to other European hotels having warm and friendly feeling areas to work at for some variety. Don't come here if you're looking for that!||The staff were mostly nice. A couple were a bit off when I asked if they spoke English, German or Spanish (I don't speak French well at all) and they just raised their eyebrows and said nothing. But mostly we made it work, and a couple of the younger team members especially flexed between languages so we call got chance to practice.||The location of the hotel is good - its only a 10 minute walk from the train station, directly on the lake, with lots of great shops, restaurants, walks, bars, gyms etc. nearby. From Geneva it took me only a little over an hour, and the 'Riviera' as it is called, is definitely worth the visit - as is the Eden Palace - as lng as you go in with your eyes open.
