Here is our story. We arrived in Taull mid-afternoon (with no advance reservations or knowledge of what is here) to find that it appeared the entire town was either asleep or abandoned. We assumed siesta time because we saw one person walking and one car drive through in 30 minutes time. Could not not find any establishments open. Driving to the northern edge of town we found a restaurant with a few cars parked. I went inside and asked about a hotel and we were referred to El Rantiner. This hotel is fairly new but built to look older in the style of the Taull buildings. Excellent design and built with high quality. The greeting and welcome we received at the hotel was really nice, wonderful and helpful staff. We had a 2nd floor room with a balcony that looks out over the village and the mountains. Awesome view. Service here is as good as any 5 star hotel and the staff treats you like family. They have a bar and a comfortable, well furnished common living room for guests. A large selection of books and games are also available to guests. There is also an outdoor patio, again with great views, where they will happily bring any drinks out to you. Breakfast here is one of the best I have had in either Spain or France and it is included in the price of the room (75 euro). We thought we would stay only one night, but we were so happy we stayed two. The meaning of the hotel name as explained to us and by showing us an example, it is a torch with resinous pine wood tied to an ash tree or a hazelnut tree stick. They have an annual summer festival here where they burn these torches. During the day we hiked the nearby trails or explored nearby towns including Taull. In the mornings and evenings we enjoyed the comforts of the great hotel. I cannot express with enough praising words for this place. VERY highly recommended.
