The Hotel and Restaurant Merch We're Buying to Support Our Favorite Places

"It's no surprise that Hotel San Jose has a great gift shop, too. (It's owned by the same folks as the Austin Motel—and its merch profits go toward the same relief fund.)"

Positive: The room was kept to a very clean standard, and the location was close to public transit and area restaurants and a grocery store. The building is bright and colorful and well shaded.k Negative: The room felt a little dark even with the main light and secondary lamp on and there was a persistent murky smell even when the fan and a/c were on. It appeared no one came to freshen the towels or empty the trash on the second day of my stay.

The manager is very nice, the rooms are updated with quartz tile and countertops, the bed was comfortable. It’s actually much nicer than I expected at this price point. There is pretty consistent din of traffic passing by and an occasional jet on approach to the San Jose Airport, but inside the room it was fairly quiet. My room was missing a few things: no shelf in the shower, no trash can in the bathroom and there’s no rod for hanging clothes, but the rooms come with mini-fridge and mini-microwave which others at this price do not. Oh, and a cash deposit is required on check-in but promptly refunded at check out.

Google
well, detail, like this place uses generators to get there customers sick, listen to other perpetrators out there, this is a business, if we wanted to get COVID 19, we wouldn’t come here, but just because it’s a hate crime and this nice place, we’ll, i guess you want to fit into the program, well, guess what???? Special Agent Sanchez & James, FBI are right across the street boys. The red car, cameras everywhere inside and out now, it better stop now!!!!! bad boys we just called the Santa Clara Health Dept about these gasses in the room

The owner (or front desk lady) is not a happy person. I had to ask for toilet paper. Then I had to ask for a wash towel. But the best part is where i had to ask for room service. 1st she tried to say to wait until the next day. I made her come look at the room because it really needed attention upon checking in. Oh, and our AC did not work. The restroom light turns off after 1 minute. If you're in the shower, it'll keep turning off. U have to wave your hand uncontrollably to turn it back on.

Giovani Melendez

Google
The pictures they use are fake or photoshop. They are not as modern as they make it out to see. The walls have scuff marks all over them and foreign particles on the bathroom walls. The door looks older than I am and seems like no insulation was used as the room was slightly warmer than outside. When we got here I was told my reservation wasn't available and they had to give me a different room. The TV didn't work. It's okay for an $80 stay but I would rather pay a little more for something better.

Google
Thank you for your service at this hotel I really wish they will accommodate more of the handicapped people I wish they had updated the whole rooms instead of just the bathrooms the closets had no space to hang your clothes and also they should have coffee pots microwaves and also better cleaning I do not like that you check in at 3:00 p.m. and have to leave at 11:00 a.m. the next morning the price is too high or what they're asking for and how many hours you can be there do you have to pay an extra $30 for being there early it should be the same as other all hotels that let you check in at any time and when you already paid they would want you to make 100.00 deposit that is very unfair for the time that they give you to stay there the service with the front desk management was very excellent in professional but otherwise making people leave when they're handicap and take their time yes they do give you more time but as far as the room everything needs to be updated and also more pillows and comforters they are very thin and also even when you put the heat on it still is cold for a thin throw blanket. Please lower the price and also update the whole rooms it's sad that you cannot have any visitors and then you have to pay all that money for a room that you cannot check into until 3:00 p.m. and have to leave at 11 that is not fair at all ! I would like to be accommodated with more hours paying a high price for a room is not fair at all!

Google
The hotel is fine, only the reception service is bad, there was an Indian woman, I asked her if she could help me by charging my cell phone since I didn't have a cable, she answered me in a rude way, I'm not angry because she didn't do me the favor. It is the attitude that it has towards the guests, if it is a hotel at least it should have good attention and be friendly when responding. it is my opinion.

Yelp
If o could give it a 0 review I would I never been to a hotel that was infested with bedbugs and roaches, and the management straight rude I would suggest for nobody to ever go there
google avatar

Yelp
Absolutely horrendous hotel i stayed here Monday and ended up being bit all over by bed bugs. The lady has absolutely no business principle. Greedy rude little lady. I stay in hotels constantly for my business and I will never stay here again. I hope your business goes under if you do not change your attitude and clean the place up.

Perla T.

Yelp
Horrible handling of unruly guests. We had a room next to ours that was incredibly noisy, screaming at each other and having the tv on full blast well past 1 am. Called front desk twice and no change. Not to mention flimsy locks of the doors despite being practically right on the street
google avatar

Yelp
what's sad is this hotel has so much potential. if only the owners had the motivation to repaint and update the furniture + sheets and bedding... this could easily be a nice hotel. and i'm sure it would boost ratings. but this hotel is NASTY, not polite, definitely a scam. the sheets had dog prints on them, weren't clean. there's stains everywhere you look, only nice thing is the bathroom. sort of. it's cheap, but you can clearly see why . wouldn't recommend. it's like they don't ever clean. the price isn't bad at all but you can see clearly why.

Lakeysha J.

Yelp
First and most important the staff was rudely accommodating when asked for both rooms to be on the same side of the building he rescanned the room keys then threw them across the counter. The heater in my room didn't work. And the is no where to hang your clothes. House keeping came in the room half clean and threw away things that shouldn't have been thrown away. The interior is nice looks like they are working on upgrades but you should never sacrifice service for looks. Also site doesn't advise of holding deposit so don't be surprised when already booked and paid for you'll be putting another 100 down for each room on your reservation

Yelp
I stayed in two different rooms at The Elan. It's a Motel with outside corridors and free parking outside your door. Unfortunately, I have to say 1 Star for Customer service. The Latino Woman who checked me in said I had to check out the next day again even though I prepaid two nights for my room. She even refused to accommodate me to check in early when I showed up at 1:30 pm. She said Come back after 3 pm. I took the long bus and BART ride from Oakland with mishaps with Bart. So I was tired and not in a good mood. I had to also argue with her about storing my suitcase since it's Standard service at any hotel. It was printed on the Hotel dot com website that Luggage Storage is included and Check in Time 2 pm. She was super rude when she asked me to bring my luggage to her onto the side door. I said I needed a min. To see if I needed to get some stuff out of my suitcase before handing it to her. She said something like When I say to bring your suitcase, You Do it. Like if I was her child. I got back after 5:30 pm after going to J-town. My first room was a little noisy facing the highway with traffic going by. I tried to ask if there were any other rooms. Since she made me come back later to Check in, I lost all opportunities to get a quieter room. She stated they are Sold out. It was Sat Oct 13th. I don't know the San Jose area very well since it's been many years since I last visited. I researched many other budget hotels and Motel that had Bedbugs. At least Elan did not have any bedbugs. I checked underneath the sheets and took it apart for signs of blood or bugs. At least the window was double paned and you can open it for fresh air. The coffeemaker pot and inside were dirty. The Room was not fully remodeled. The only major good thing of Elan is that the bus stops a 1.5 block away. So it's a short ride to Downtown once you figure out the routes. There is a Cheap Burger Stand with outdoor seating across from the bus stop. But I wanted to eat lunch in Japantown, so I headed there instead. The Caltrain Station is only a mile away. Walmart is 5-6 blocks away. The second room was more spacious and the bathtub was nicer since the bathroom was remolded. But there was a gash in the drywall behind the open closet. The wall surrounding the hairdryer was plastered but no paint was applied yet. The coffeemaker was dirty so I did not use it. The microwave and frig were cleaner. I thought that in the back of the 2nd building would be quieter. I was wrong. It was horrible. I did not get to sleep til 3am. A Harley Guest took his noisy motorcycle out at 1:30 am. He came back an hour later. My neighbor opened and closed his door maybe 10-12 times. He had a woman guest come over at 2 am and I heard her talking. He had people knocking at his door which sounded like someone knocking at my door at 9 am. I don't know if he was selling drugs or not since some cars stopped by in front. The Planes flew over the Motel making more loud noise since they are right on the Runway path.

Yelp
I got a king bed for 3 nights and 4 days for $230. Ok price for what we got, so I guess you get what you pay for. The room smelled, the bath tub was stained, and the bedding and the curtain looks like it was from the 1950s. We could hear pretty much every single thing that happened in the neighboring rooms on either side of us, downstairs, and outside almost as if the noise was right inside of our rommThe front door handle is hella loose and weird, so it takes a good Jimmy to actually get the front door open. The AC doesn't work, but the heater works and it smelled bad when we did turn it on. The microwave, the fridge, and the coffee pot works and was clean at least. The floor doesn't look or feel clean, so I kept my shoes on at all times. I had to call several times to ask for several rolls of toilet paper because they forget about you and the toilet paper just doesn't last. You have the flush the toilet twice to get anything down. The towels are thin and scratchy and suck. But good location because everything is in walkable or public transportation distance. Someone knocked on our door like 4 times at 10am this one time and each time I kept asking what they wanted. They said something unintelligible before giving up and leaving. I hope it was housekeeping and not some random creep. This place gives you vibes that someone might try to go into your room. I recommend going here if you need a cheap place and are happy that you at least got a place with hot water, good wifi, no bugs, microwave, fridge and coffee pot. I also recommend bringing air freshener, hand soap, shampoo/conditioner, your own towels, and something to protect yourself just in case some tries to enter your room.

Yelp
Worst customer service. I booked my reservation through Expedia the same day and the old lady in the reception didn't give me my room cause she didn't see the money in the account. The app already charged me and this old lady wasnt able to accommodate my needs, she was rude and she felt like she was managing a 5 starts hotel. This is an ugly cheap hotel with too many rules. AVOID STAYING HERE.

Yelp
I didn't give it zero stars because I couldn't but this is by far the worst hotel I have ever stayed at. I guess you get what you paid for but even then this was bad. The first room we got smelled like cigarettes and the smell was so bad we asked to be moved to another room. The second room was better smelling but it was super dirty like it hadn't been cleaned before. The shower had hairs all over it. The sheets had cigarette burns on them. There was little flying animals in the room and the floor of the bathroom had dirty foot prints on them. Honestly don't waste your money. Use it for another place even if you have to pay a couple more dollars. Thank god we only had to stay one night.

Yelp
I don't even know what to say. I never leave reviews but I've never been told I can't stay somewhere because I look like someone else that may have committed some illegal activity at this place of business. My wife was in from out of state and we needed a room. The front desk did everything they could to make sure we didn't stay there. I guess my wife looked like a prostitute and I was her pimp. I was told I couldn't have no visitors immediately and the lady at the front desk immediately sold out all the available rooms that were available online only 10 minutes before we walked through the door. We were on a budget and we were treated very unkindly. If you're willing to drive 15 minutes south the Wyndham blows this place away and we paid 4 dollars less.

Yelp
The hotel is in a good location quite a few good things in walking distance. However, the hotel is on a main road and the rooms are not soundproof so expect to hear a lot of noise at night. The hotel staff wasn't rude, but really felt like they didn't give a shit. We noticed some blood stains on the floor and asked about it and they said it was paint, yet very clearly it wasn't. Overall the room was not very great and service was not very satisfactory. Honestly I would just find somewhere else to stay, as the location really didn't make up for everything else.

Yelp
OMG!!!!! Unfortunately i cant post video on here but here is my experience with Elan Hotel San Jose, I woke up into their construction next unit upstairs, the walls are super thin and my whole room was shaking on every hammer that hits the wall! I was sick and trying to get sleep, i went to the lobby and complained how come this they allow such thing in morning time ,in the next room and dont even give anybody a warning. Later found to be the manager, immediately was offended on my complaint. She did not even apologized and said well we can change your room if you want. I said sure i want to but i also would like a refund or partial refund at least for the inconvenience. She responded by giving me options of checking out or change the room!!! I thats fine just change the room. I was handed the key and before i leave the lobby i asked the other front desk there if there is an email for feedbacks. The manager heard that immediately got up and started yelling; " get out, you are not getting a room here, leave now". She started to following me i tried to rush to my car for a safe place, another coworker responded there after hearing her yelling like that. She start saying some things in a foreign language to him, then he physically stoped me, and said you need to go back to the lobby and we check out now. I immediately complied and did so. I was scared for my life at that point. They refused to gave names , owner name , license information, or anything to me. I have never been treated like this in my life. I have file official complaints because i have most of this on tape, and planning to pursue personal litigation, against the manager and the worker. Thank you for hearing my voice everyone and avoid this place at all cost!!!

Yelp
Check in took forever. Staff was very unhelpful, even rude. The rooms were the bare minimum and dirty. Will not go back again. The only plus things are free parking and free wifi.

Bonnie A.

Yelp
The rooms aren't anything like the advertised photos. Dirty, uncomfortable beds and pillows.

Yelp
Good price. Rude service. Gross room. The worst part was it smelled bad. It also had lots of stains (including a strange one on the ceiling). It would only take a little TLC for the room to look less crappy but I'm not sure about the awful smell (like someone had smoked a lot in the room and then they used a heavy air freshener to try to mask it. I would not stay here again.
google avatar

Danny Y.

Yelp
Terrible service! The room smelled also terrible too. It was very nosing at night because it closes Main Street. Many police cars stayed there more than 3 hours the night when we stayed. I couldn't go sleep until 4 am because the neighbor loud talking and doors opened and closed. I only sit on the sofa for few minutes, I got red and itchy back for many days. I very regretted to book this Motel.

Yelp
Great Service by the staff would highly recommend! Check in was smooth and rooms were cozy and charming

Yelp
I thought my reservation was for two nights. My family and I slept good on the first night. We went out to do our own thing the following morning. At the end of the day we went back to our room but the guy on the front desk told us that they took out our belongings to their storage. A dirty storage where they store their cleaning stuff. Our luggage was loose and they dumped it in a dirty storage. I saw some other people's belongings together with ours. He said that the manager was trying to contact me but i didn't answer. I don't have any missed calls and no email. It is so unprofessional, disrespectful and rude to just take out my personal belongings without letting me know. They have bad customer service and not welcoming. They could have charged me for an extra night instead of taking out my personal belongings without my knowledge.

Yelp
Please don't ignore the bad reviews, wouldn't recommend. Booked through third party for three night stay. When asked to check out after the first night, which was bad... It was a hassle. The place was noisy, carpet filthy, and room dusty. Like no one dusted for over a month. People staying at the hotel/motel watched us unpacked our car like we were in a weird movie or something. The front door had an opening at the bottom. Enough space for insects to crawl through, and two did. No cockroaches though. Thank goodness. There were flying insects in front of the door around the light in the corridor and several of them got into the room. There was no channel listing for the tv. Nor was there breakfast! I never stayed any place like it before. And that will definitely be the last time. They can do much better than that!

Yelp
Last week I had a stay at this hotel just needed something to stay one night, literally booked the day of. Later that night I was getting ready for bed when I had noticed a bug on the bed and on the wall as well. I then looked for more bugs around the room and found a dead spider on the ceiling. I pack my bags and put them in the car and speak to young guy at the counter I didn't make a big fuss because the guy looked scared and it wasn't in the nicest place of San Jose and I didn't want to frighten him more (his hands were shaking and looked like a deer in headlights) I tell him I wanna check out and showed him these pictures. He checks me out and tells me he left a note for the manager and they'll reach back to me the following day because I asked for a refund or at least something in return bc I was only in the room for 6 hours! I waited a day and I got nothing from the manager so I called the 2 days after the night. The first time I call I get told the manager wasn't in that they're only there from 8am-11am. I work from 4am-6pm. So I called again another day around 11ish because I had a little time at work to make the call and this time I'm sure it was the manager speaking and they proceeded to tell me no the manager isn't there I tell them this is your guys business I shouldn't be the one having to call you after you guys keep saying that you'll reach back. I told the lady on the phone to write my number on a note and leave it for the manager it's now a week later and I still have nothing in return so I'm making this review I hope management sees this and reaches back. Very unprofessional place save your money DO NOT STAY HERE IF I COULD GIVE ZERO STARS I WOULD!

Yelp
I went to this hotel because it was listed at a very good price on Priceline. First off the staff is very nice and accommodating. The room was fine and had all the amenities one would expect to have. I liked the location very central to where I needed to go after my stay. My FAVORITE aspect to this hotel is that if you happen to forget something in your room, which I'm notoriously known to do, they call you to tell you what you left behind and they will hold on to it until you come back for it. I have NEVER gotten a call from a hotel telling me I left something behind. Kudos to this hotel. Whenever I need a hotel in San Jose, I will definitely stay here.

Yelp
Bed Bugs Do not stay here!!! Absolutely the most disgusting place I've ever been to and the whole experience was a a nightmare. Dealing with the incompetent staff to manager and owner who are rude and liars this place is hell. Bed bugs are a reoccurring problem at this location. This place does not deserve to be in business.

Yelp
Let's face it, this is a motel not a hotel. Outside area is not the best, but value is ok. Staff was friendly. Street side units get noise from the road. Room was ok - Twin queen with fridge, TV, nice dressing/sink area, but small bathroom. Hardwood floors are good instead of carpet, but we were on the 2nd floor. I suspect 1st floor could get noisy from that. There was a fight in a unit that a bunch of police had to show up for while we were out to dinner. Yikes. Noisy people in the morning banging on doors and yelling names to wake up their friends for work. Simple as they come breakfast was 3 kinds of cereal, toast, plain bagels, apples/oranges. Coffee, juice, and milk.

Yelp
First: BED BUGS - After my first night staying at Hotel Elan, I woke up with a few bug bites and thought it could be a mosquito or something... Second night at Hotel Elan, I woke up with bites all over my body, eyes, forehead, neck, back, arms, fingers, literally all over. I had never seen bed bugs before nor experienced anything so aggressive... I started itching and little blisters appeared on each bug bite... I went to Hotel Elan's front desk and asked them if they ever had any guests complaining about bed bugs... The response was: "We hear things, but we never saw anything..." Then I asked the person at the counter to take a good look at my body and asked them if they were able to see that now??? Hotel Elan's staff then moved me from room 453 to room 448.... I am sorry, I might not be following... Doesn't that just carry the bugs over now that I have all my clothes exposed to this monster insect? I switched rooms but I got more bites... I tried for 4 days to speak to a manager and the manager was never there. I attended the event looking like I had chicken pox, I felt contagious... What if this "thing" is hiding somewhere and just spreads to more people at the conference? I had plans to stay with a friend after the event for 2 days, had to get another hotel and an additional expense because I didn't want to bring their bug infestation to someone else's home. I don't even know how I am going to do to go home... How can I go home??? I called the Pest Control Health Department, filed a report, they already had a report from previous months... If anyone has experienced this unfortunate event, please do something! Call and file a complaint at 408-918-4770, think of the children staying there... I am an adult and I fell off balance with this, felt uncomfortable, felt contagious in public while attending a conference... Can you imagine the itching discomfort I am feeling if now we are talking about a little kid? If you see something I just ask you to please, DO SOMETHING... And based on my review and several others about this hotel, I am sure you can find a better place for the same price range to stay... If you read the other Hotel reviews, you will notice I am not the first one to suffer. *************************************************************************************** Second: CUSTOMER SERVICE - I arrived early at Hotel Elan and even though they had rooms available they declined to check me in a bit earlier if I didn't pay a $10 fine. I had to work so I stayed at their lobby working on my computer until I was finally able to check in. A Spanish speaking guest arrived and asked the manager about his reservation and instead of trying to understand, she just replied with a bit of an attitude: "I don't speak Spanish". When I heard that, I approached and offered the gentleman to help him as I did understand and even if I didn't I would still try to help. *************************************************************************************** Third: BREAKFAST - Breakfast at Hotel Elan is included and has a set times to be served ending at 10 am. I came to the breakfast serving area (aka lobby) at 8 am and there was nothing... I asked about the times to serve breakfast and the person behind the counter said, oh, we ran out of stuff... If you are in the hotel business and there is a 5,000 plus people conference going on in town YOU SHOULD BE PREPARED!!! *************************************************************************************** PLEASE REPORT THEM : If you need to file a claim about their bed bug infestation, please call the Code Enforcement in San Jose, CA at 408-535-7770. They can actually fine the hotel and force them to take the proper measurements! If you see something, DO SOMETHING!

Yelp
Stayed here twice. The first experience was nice. Pretty clean, not noisy, comfortable, no problems and slept soundly. It's not up to par with nicer places but at least it's not like a motel 6 or ez8...room service did knock early in the morning though. Why would you do that? Let people sleep. It would have been three stars due to it's mediocre qualities; not very impressive but good enough. Plus, I don't really care for their little, basic breakfast in the AM. The second experience seemed nice as well. I had no thoughts of being left disappointed due to my previous experience being alright. It was about 1:30AM when I started to feel my knee itch. I had had a problem years ago one time when I had gotten these kind of bites and immediately realized these were bedbug bites. ( 3 bites at a time, almost adjacent to each other, and continuously itchy - different feeling from mosquito bites) Also, I have sensitive skin and react to these things pretty quickly....see pics. So, I started looking around the bed like a mad woman in search of what may have bitten me. Lo and behold, hiding by the lining of the pillow, in the pillowcase, was the culprit. These things are never one or two though. They live together as many, so watch out if you are staying in the 230-s...or in any room for that matter. They have an infestation. I got it with a kleenex and took it in a small towel to the front desk. When I showed it to the lady she asked, "what is tHAt??". I calmly explained what it was and that it was unacceptable. She offered another room but [ why would I want to risk going to another infested room and bringing it back to my own home. You are ridiculous. ] ---inside thoughts... No No and NO. NEVER AGAIN.

Yelp
The hotel room smelled like ASS! like someone forgot to flush and the smell just sat there forever... Further inspection led me to think it was coming from moisture dripping from the refrigerator. Meh.. You get what you pay for right? Lit a match to cover it up. it worked.. The room was dirty. They didn't vacuum under the beds, but I guess no one really ever checks underneath anyway right... Wrong.. Service was excellent, they get a star for that.. They even let us check in early ;) The other star is for the free breakfast haha. bagels, bread, oatmeal, cereal, pastries, and fruit. Over all this place is hood. That is not a typo I said "HOOD".. If you can't handle it look elsewhere. You'll thank me later.

Yelp
Horrible flea infested room. Don't know what's going on in this hotel but I've never paid so much and been treated so bad not even a I'm sorry from the manager. Mr. Babar I had to two tonight room book and left after the first night water was leaking from the ceiling the bathroom was was gross look like somebody got in a major fight in there mold in between the tile supposedly they have flat screen TVs none heating lamp in the restroom didn't work lamps in the bedroom didn't work. Restroom toilet leaking water all Nite. And if you don't believe me just look at the pictures.

Vanessa G.

Yelp
Please read!!!! This was the worst hotel i have ever booked. To start off the front desk staff did not have her stuff together. Gave me a room that was still getting cleaned by the house keeper and ended having to wait for another one. The room was smelly, bathtub dirty, cigarette smell and the smoke detector was wrapped with a plastic bag. It felt unsafe i heard like someone was trying to open my door twice in the middle of the night. Dont let the pictures fool you and not a good area either. Please dont stay here if you have children.

Yelp
If your looking for a rundown hotel with bountiful prostitutes and drug activity this is your spot. As well as the front desk lady "Teresa" being completely rude with no people skills what-so ever I would never recommend this place to anyone. I was told by the night manager that we could have a late check out which was 12 noon, but was woken up by "Teresa" banging on the door . I explained I made arrangements with the night manager to get an extra hour of sleep but she said she's in charge now and check out is 11. Rushing me out of my room, with no regards to my 6hour plus drive home

Yelp
This place claims to have all remodeled rooms but our room #111 looks like it's from the 80s. The mattress had some nasty stains. Room stinks. Bathtub looks like it's been fixed about 10times. I will post some pictures . And I'm all itchy from who knows what's in this room. Stay away

Yelp
Reasonably clean, respectable two-star motel. Neighborhood a little dodgy and I wasn't entirely comfortable walking back from downtown. Breakfast was choice of three kinds of cereal, toast, and plain bagels. Only blurry analog TV. WiFi worked well.

Yelp
Wish I had read the reviews before reserving this place for a night. Suppose to have two queens, got two doubles. Dirty hand towel on the counter. Only decaf coffee in the room (caffeinated coffee availability is minor, but much needed some days). Reading reviews of hookers, bed bugs, residents...thinking this will be a one and done for us. Impatiently waiting as I write for my kids/husband to wake up so we can get out of here. Afraid of what we might bring home with us. Definitely not worth the cost!

Yelp
Stayed here again since it's so conveniently close to Kelley Park. It's not our first time staying at Elan so we know what to expect. In the past we heard about hookers but never saw any at the hotel, this time was different. Traffic was okay on street outside. We were concerned to hear they no longer have a security guard watching the parking lot. Our vehicles were safe so that was a relief. Buddy of ours was propositioned at the market down the street. The area is colorful but safe... The burger bar on the corner has great fast food. Denny's across street is okay but gets serious vagrant action. Not a place for families but safe enough for business traveler w low budget in mind. Lock your car!

Yelp
For the cost, Hotel Elan is a good place to stay. The room has everything you need to live on a budget, including a decently sized fridge and microwave. The bathroom also had a timed heater, which we did not need given the weather but would definitely have been a feature in a cooler week. The room was not the cleanest, and the rug was pretty stained. However, neither of the beds in the room had bedbugs or whatever other atrocities some reviews mention. In fact, the beds were pretty comfortable and pleasantly spaceous. It's also true that the area in which the hotel is located isn't the most reputable, and we spotted a couple of the famed prostitutes we read so much about here, plus a decent share of homeless people. But you know, if you don't bother them, they don't bother you, and the security of the rooms was good enough that we were really not concerned. Unfortunately, we didn't try the continental breakfast, so I can't make a judgement on its quality. However, I will mention that there is a Denny's just across the street within easy walking distance. Overall, this is clearly not a high-end establishment, but you get your money's worth and the amenities you need to keep to a smaller budget.

Yelp
This is where I stayed for 2 week when I first moved to CA and it was an excellent value, the staff was great and I was very impressed with the continental breakfast, in fact it was one of the best I have ever had. Everything was wonderful. The second time I stayed here about 3 months later when a friend from home came to visit was a total disaster, the bedding looked as if someone had emptied their electric razor on it and the staff was rude (not the over night/early morning guy he was awesome) and the breakfast was lame. As for the neighborhood and other motel guest.... it wasnt the classiest bunch but I didnt see any hookers or pimps, though I see how people could think that. I moved from Minneapolis and am not frightened by "those people" as the average CA native is. I would probably give this place one more chance because it is such a great value and it has everything I look for when selecting lodging. Fridge, Micro, Free Internet, Free breakfast.

Yelp
LOL what an amusing bunch of PREVIOUS reviews! ;) It's almost true about "Working Girls", the last time I stayed here about 3 years ago, business was "booming" (LOL). HOWEVER, apparently the criminal activities are NOT being tolerated any more, signs posted let you know that, Police will be watching! ALSO, the rooms are being updated, and renovated, slowly from what I gather. OK, now I liked this place even back 3 years ago, and STILL like it, BUT, as a truck driver that stays in motels a hell of a lot, this place is definitely a 6 or 7 on a 1 to 10, in MY OPINION, for the 2 star range lodging. I have stayed in some SERIOUS dumps, places even a Sailor wouldn't party, and I'm a NAVET! ;) Hotel Elan is probably best suited for smokers, younger crowds, open minded folks of any age, and MIL! (GRIN) and the adventurous. Would I bring my Wife here? Sure, I KNOW my Wife and know she would be cool with it! :) The rooms really are nice, again, in MY OPINION, even the non-updated ones. They have their own character, some motels and inns do NOT! The rooms have a microwave, Refrig, TV, Coffee Pot, earth tone colors, and though they may look late 70's, early 80's, are welcoming, to me at least. But I am 50, so......... ;) Honestly though, folks that are used to "high end" HOTELS, you may NOT want to book here, see the photos, read reviews, and see what you think BEFORE you pay! There is NOT an elevator for those needing special accommodations, so I of course, recommend you call the Hotel itself, and make a reservation for a ground floor room. There is a Denny's across the street, and a Wendy's a little further down, didn't really see much else, though the street is VERY busy. Maybe there are a few more eateries nearby, I would check Google Maps. (My FAVORITE Map guide!) If you are bothered by trivial things, smoke smell, loud streets, lack of anything fun to do within seconds of walking, party type folks, then maybe you might choose another Motel?Inn? Just a thought. I personally would (definitely) stay here with my Wife on a personal visit, without thinking about it, for what ever that is worth! :) OH, and if you want to SEE my room (229) , check out MY photos! :)

Yelp
Went online to try and book this hotel. I called to confirm to make sure all the specials offered were indeed what we were going to get. When I called I talked to Theresa and told her I was on her site and was booking a room for the 11-13 of July. The rate was $170 for both nights and included 2 free roll away beds for children. Her response was no we don't have that special. I said I am looking right at it and she then said she would call the company and get it taken down. I asked what I would be looking at if I did book this and she said it would be well over 230 for the 2 nights with the roll away beds. I told her that was crazy and very misleading since I had the screen pulled up and she said she would take care of that right away. I will not give money to company who does business like this and would recommend you do not either!

Yelp
I thought staying here would be fine as my friends had stayed here last year but didn't complain. They didn't offer good reviews either. The room smells. I mean, I do not think I can sleep here it smells so bad. I've got the window open and air conditioner on full blast although I'm a little concerned about having the window open in this neighborhood. There is a chair by the front door that is so filthy, a BART train seat look pristine. I did see the maid put new sheets, blankets and spreads on the beds, thank goodness. I'd leave if I could, but it's paid for and all the other hotels are booked for the holiday. I am not happy.

Yelp
I'm only rating this hotel two stars because of the friendly staff but the hotel itself wasn't so nice. The restroom was very unsat. Walls dirty, tub stained, water damage on the ceiling and broken shower rods. I made a phone call and staff was able to fix the shower rod. Television was not functioning properly. Called staffed and the where able to fix television. Room did have a disgusting smell but kinda faded away after getting use to the stinch. Room service did a good job making our beds every morning though.

Yelp
It was cheap, it was clean and that's about it. LOUD clientele, possible hookers in rooms? Good amount of other hotel guests partying loudly all through the night and the walls are THIN.

Yelp
I read the negative reviews and decided I'd not be put off by some isolated incidents. Bear in mind most people who have a good experience never bother to leave a review, but if they have complaints they are very likely to do so! So the average is highly skewed. My experience was fine! The young man in the office was very pleasant, polite and efficient. He called me a while after I'd gotten to my room to make sure everything was OK. How many hotels do that?? I was impressed with the freshness and cleanliness of the room, especially after the scathing reviews below! The bed was well-made and spotless, and critter-free! The bathroom was clean and well-stocked, shower was great, everything as good or better than the Holiday InnExpress down the street for twice the price. The room was spacious, the furniture way better than the garbage you now find in a Motel 6, the TV of good quality. The quality of the bed, the mattress and bedding was excellent. I slept like a rock! Outside, very little traffic noise (and it was a Friday night!), no noisy hotrods, hookers or hostile homies! I had my valuable motorcycle parked out there and felt fine about it. The breakfast in a nice bonus and everyone in the office was polite. So if my room is any indication, either I lucked out and got the Presidential Suite, or they revamped the place since those earlier reviews. In any case, i'd be happy to stay there again.

Yelp
Cleaned up and now gated. Rooms are decent in both quality and size but no great deal! Close to downtown businesses as well as rift raft. The Wendy's next to it has sn entertaining crowd. Dennys across the street 300 feet down as well.

Yelp
I am going to let you all know that while I was staying here a staff member did something that was AGAINST THE LAW I WAS IN MY ROOM LYING DOWN ON THE BED AND HAD A DOOR TO THE ROOM LOCKED...HOUSEKEEPING OPENS THE DOOR AND DOES NOT KNOCK FIRST!!!!! So....she opens the door and fortunately I am not wearing my Bday suit. THIS IS AN INVASION OF PRIVACY!!!! I finally talk to the hotel manager and he tells me if I want an apologize???? A discount on a room??? Oh BTW the hotel is a total dump and not in a good part of town. I will never be back..so once housekeeping broke the law, I left, got something to eat and checked out .oh and I left a message for the manager to call me and of course he has not done so.

Yelp
This hotel says it has wueen beds but only doubles. People were talking and running around all night long. No sleep. Room needs updating. Staff friendly. Too close to road noise. Wont stay here again.

Yelp
We had a conference at the San Jose Convention Center we had asked for one king we received two queen beds our room smells like cigarette smoke they came to spray but it didn't help, the television in the room was terrible very old our friends in the next room didn't work, I use the hair dryer and smoke started coming out of it our friends in the next room when she woke up and look at the pillow saw there was dried blood on their pillow case and it didn't come from her, the sheets didn't look like they hadn't been changed. The bed's were old the chair had stains on it I honestly look at the reviews and they looked OK and I really don't understand why. The only good thing was it was close to the convention center. I would never stay here again.
