Our recent stay at the Emporio Hotel in Veracruz was, regrettably, far from the experience one would expect from an establishment of its calibre.
The room itself was disappointingly outdated, with a bathroom that was not only visibly unclean but also permeated by the unmistakable stench of mould. It was immediately evident that proper maintenance and hygiene were not a priority. While the hotel did offer us an alternative room with a functioning shower, it was hardly an improvement on the state of our original accommodation.
The breakfast was, admittedly, quite good. However, communication proved to be a significant challenge, as none of the staff spoke English. This made it frustratingly difficult to ascertain what was available or to make any specific requests. Service, in general, was mediocre at best—staff often seemed more preoccupied with their own conversations in the corner rather than tending to guests.
Cleanliness throughout the hotel left much to be desired. The ice machine, for instance, appeared to have been neglected for quite some time, coated in a layer of grime that made using it an unappealing prospect.
As for the front desk staff, they were, quite frankly, of no practical use. Simple inquiries—such as where to find something sweet or which flavours were most popular at the ice cream shop next door—were met with blank expressions and unhelpful responses. One would expect a basic level of local knowledge from hotel staff, yet they seemed entirely uninformed and disinterested in assisting guests.
To the hotel's credit, they did offer a 50% discount after we raised our concerns. However, no amount of compensation can truly remedy the disappoitment of an underwhelming stay. For those considering a visit, I would strongly advise looking elsewhere unless the management makes significant improvements in cleanliness, service, and overall hospitality.
