"At last, an English country house hotel for people who loathe both traditional English country house hotels with their whispery dining rooms, dusty chintz, equestrian prints and phlegmatic plumbing, and also the new breed of hip faux rustic boltholes where the bell-hop might confide that it was Kate Moss herself who was responsible for the cigarette burn in the night table by your bed and fire doors thump all night long. Here instead, compliments of Olga Polizzi, sister of Sir Rocco Forte and one of the world’s most brilliant hoteliers, and her daughter Alex, who runs the place, is a story-book country house hotel—friendly, discreetly stylish, comfortable, quiet, surrounded by lovely gardens and possessing a superb setting just on the edge of Dartmoor in Devon and overlooking the Tamar River, which divides Cornwall and Devon. This 16 room hotel was created from the 1812 shooting and fishing lodge of Georgina, Duchess of Bedford, and the Regency spirit of the place has been handsomely brought across by Polizzi with framed etchings, China Trade wallpaper, bamboo bit and pieces, lots of books—this is a superb destination for anyone who loves to read—and superbly comfortable beds. This place is heaven for couples where one is sporting and the other isn’t, since riding is possible, along with hiking, and there’s famously good salmon and sea-trout fishing at an adjacent club, all of which means it’s easy to leave the sedentary in peace. Chef Shay Cooper does a clever update of the sort of dishes you kind hope to find in this setting, mostly good simple old-fashioned English food like roasts and wonderful fresh salmon, and breakfast are memorably delicious. The only things, in fact, that are reminiscent of traditional English country houses are in fact quite welcome, the honor bar in the library, the full cream tea served, and the thwack of someone playing croquet on a lawn somewhere."

The Endsleigh estate is a very special place with long and interesting history. The hotel is perfectly placed in the middle of the grounds with spectacular views over the River Tamar. ||The hotel is a very relaxing place to spend time in. All the staff were very friendly. We particularly appreciated the tour that the GM gave us of the hotel, with a detailed explanation of the hotel’s history. ||The rooms are all of a very high quality. However, they are all individual and so well worth taking a bit of time to look at the various options available. ||A great hotel and highly recommended.

The hotel itself is excellent, but that is what I would expect given the prices. The grounds are magnificent and the staff are wonderful. Even better, they have EV charging on site. ||The food is also extremely good, although the menus could be presented more clearly and offer more vegetarian options; especially in the evening. My wife looked at the presented menu on our first evening and explained that she did not like the single vegetarian option on offered (it had mushrooms). She then asked if a simple vegetarian pasta could be prepared which was done. On our second night the single vegetarian choice on the presented menu was the same as the previous night so once again my wife explained that it was not suitable. At this point it was revealed that there actually was another separate vegetarian menu! This was an improvement, although it still only offered 1 additional main choice. However, we both had the starter from this menu. I cannot understand why all options available are not shown on a single menu. If they must be separate for some obscure reason, I cannot understand why we were not offered both menus at the start. I am not a vegetarian, but would often like a vegetarian option. ||The hotel describes itself as dog friendly and I would agree that in the main this is very true. However, this does not hold for the dining options. We would never choose to leave our dog in a strange room and would always prefer her to be with us. On our first evening we were told we could not dine in the main restaurant. I perfectly understand that some people would not want to have dogs where they eat. However, we were told our only option was to eat in a totally sperate area away from everyone else by ourselves or on one of the very low tables in the bar/lounge area. These low tables may have been reasonable if we wanted to eat a TV dinner or were in a less prestigious hotel, but for us when we were expecting to eat an excellent meal was not in the least acceptable. After some discussion and insistence, a dining table was laid up in the lounge area immediately next to the restaurant. This at least gave us somewhere reasonable to eat and was made available for us during the rest of our stay. However, I remain disappointed that we were not made aware of such limitations when we booked (I would not have kept the reservation) and that it took some insistence to achieve a reasonable solution. Most importantly, I do not understand why an area of the primary restaurant is not designated as dog friendly. The main dining area consists of at least 3 separate rooms and the 1 immediately next to the lounge, which I think had 3 or 4 tables in it, would seem an ideal compromise. ||We stayed in Stable Suite 18 which was lovely. However, the stairs were very steep and being bare wooden boards, they were also slippery. In addition, the rooms would benefit from having at least 1 light that was adequate to see clearly. We were also surprised that there were no biscuits supplied in the room and no acknowledgement of the double 70th celebration other than the card they came with the small bottle of champagne that we purchased as part of our reservation.

Came for a walk around the gardens. Katie on reception was delightful and Jade our waitress makes the best mocha I've had in a very long time. The gardens are beautiful, the waterfall and Bamboo forest were in particular beautiful

Fabulous location deep in the heat of south Devon countryside overlooking the Tamar. The wow is the setting - grounds and gardens laid out by Humphry Repton for the Duke and Duchess of Bedford. Highlight of our stay was a walk round the garden with the Head Gardener who enthusiastically imparted his knowledge of the history and pointed out various champion trees.||We have stayed at both Tresanton and The Star, Endsleigh is very different in vibe - think Edwardian hunting lodge. Roaring log fires and lots of dark panelling make this a perfect autumn/winter retreat.||Loved our room - no 8- overlooking croquet lawn and across the valley. Spacious with seating area. ||Do ask about the long walk along the river through the adjacent private estate. Access can be obtained by prior arrangement and allows a walk up to a pub and back again (60-70 mins each way).||As it is an old building so expect to hear creaking floorboards and dependent on the demeanour of your upstairs neighbours it can feel like herds of elephants are above you, constantly migrating backwards and forwards. Decor in places could do with refreshing but accept the challenges of an old historic building.||Service is calm and discreet. Sensed potentially could have done with a few more folk around, but the ones there were were always helpful.||Food was consistently good and lots of it. Only complaint was breakfast - a lack of fresh fruit (the fruit salad consisted only of melon which is not very Polizzi and reminded me more of a Novotel) and a very watery overly sweet porridge made with water -couldn’t eat it. ||Just these few small things would make the difference between 4 and 5 stars.

We have just returned from a magical few days here...it is our second visit here and we already can't wait to return. There was nothing that could have enhanced our stay any more. From the welcome and friendliness of all the staff we met, they could not have been more helpful. The peaceful and relaxing atmosphere made extra special by so many crackling fires and candlelight. Absolutely delicious food and we loved our table in a small private dining room by a beautiful fire so we could dine with our dog, it was hugely appreciated. Beautiful grounds to walk around and all in all we left feeling thoroughly spoiled and relaxed and very very lucky to be able to enjoy a stay at such a special place.

We had the most amazing anniversary dinner. We were looked after by the fantastic front of house staff from the minute we walked through the door to the moment we left. The food was incredible and beautifully presented. Thank you all so much for making our anniversary dinner so special.

Good food and a lovely setting in a wooded valley. Very friendly, helpful and attentive staff. ||Great walks, beautiful scenery in the Tamar valley. ||Fantastic place for dogs, you almost feel that having a dog whilst you are there is obligatory!||One of the best hotels in the Westcountry, I throughly recommend it.

Such a lovely place. Afternoon tea in a cozy lounge with the family. Quality of food very good and service was excellent. Have been many times and never had a bad visit. My only tiny comment would be it would be nice to have a few more finger sandwiches as how can you omit a cucumber sandwich with afternoon tea!
