Hotel Endsleigh

"At last, an English country house hotel for people who loathe both traditional English country house hotels with their whispery dining rooms, dusty chintz, equestrian prints and phlegmatic plumbing, and also the new breed of hip faux rustic boltholes where the bell-hop might confide that it was Kate Moss herself who was responsible for the cigarette burn in the night table by your bed and fire doors thump all night long. Here instead, compliments of Olga Polizzi, sister of Sir Rocco Forte and one of the world’s most brilliant hoteliers, and her daughter Alex, who runs the place, is a story-book country house hotel—friendly, discreetly stylish, comfortable, quiet, surrounded by lovely gardens and possessing a superb setting just on the edge of Dartmoor in Devon and overlooking the Tamar River, which divides Cornwall and Devon. This 16 room hotel was created from the 1812 shooting and fishing lodge of Georgina, Duchess of Bedford, and the Regency spirit of the place has been handsomely brought across by Polizzi with framed etchings, China Trade wallpaper, bamboo bit and pieces, lots of books—this is a superb destination for anyone who loves to read—and superbly comfortable beds. This place is heaven for couples where one is sporting and the other isn’t, since riding is possible, along with hiking, and there’s famously good salmon and sea-trout fishing at an adjacent club, all of which means it’s easy to leave the sedentary in peace. Chef Shay Cooper does a clever update of the sort of dishes you kind hope to find in this setting, mostly good simple old-fashioned English food like roasts and wonderful fresh salmon, and breakfast are memorably delicious. The only things, in fact, that are reminiscent of traditional English country houses are in fact quite welcome, the honor bar in the library, the full cream tea served, and the thwack of someone playing croquet on a lawn somewhere."

Hotel Endsleigh, Tamar Valley, Devon, UK - Explore & Book

"What a setting! From the oak-panelled drawing room where we sit with Earl Grey tea and cream-laden scones, our gaze sweeps over a rainbow of flowering borders and a neat croquet lawn, across the Tamar, and loses itself in the dark conifer forests of the far bank: the start of Cornwall. There is not another building in sight. Immense copper beeches and Douglas firs stand sentinel over tumbling brooks, a Victorian shell grotto and an octagonal dairy house surely inhabited by pixies. It's little wonder that the Duke of Bedford, who 2 centuries ago owned a third of Devon, chose this spot for his hunting and fishing lodge. Now Grade-I listed and converted into an enchanting hideaway by Olga Polizzi and her hotel-inspecting daughter Alex, it draws a discerning, romantic clientele, who savour the fine cuisine, the private fishing, the landscaped grounds, the crackle of newspapers and fireplaces at tea time, and the deep, bucolic silence outside. In summer, those who can afford it block-book the place for lavish weekend weddings in the most idyllic of surrounds (married life, as my wife observed, could only go downhill after that). The 21 classically English bedrooms and suites are a study in painted wallpapers, roll-top bathtubs, book-lined shelves and snugly quilted beds; there's also a separate gatekeeper's cottage ideal for a couple with children. Highs A beautiful location midway between Dartmoor and Bodmin Moor; you've also got superb hiking and riding on your doostepWonderfully romantic (candles flickered throughout when we last visited), though families are warmly welcomed, tooThe beds (many of them kingsize) are blissfully comfy, and the widely spaced layout ensures total silenceWe loved the lavish afternoon teas, and lingering over pre-dinner drinks in the fire-lit lounge and librarySmiling, ever-helpful staff who are clearly passionate about the historic lodge and estate Lows The focus here is quiet refinement - it's not for those seeking a vibrant party atmosphereDinner is a set-price (though very tasty) affair, and it's a drive to other eateries if you fancy something more informalA few of the bedrooms are under the eaves or on the small side, but this is reflected in the ratesYou're as far from the sea as you can be in Devon or Cornwall (25 miles from Boscastle or Looe) - if you want seaside, try their sister hotel Tresanton" - Michael Cullen

I was treated to an overnight stay here by my friends. Firstly, the setting is stunning, the views are immense and beautiful. |I sat in the garden during the afternoon into the early evening and had a few cocktails, made to perfection may I say!|We ate our dinner in the library as we had a dog with us. Perfectly set up for us. |The food was incredible, the service outstanding and I didn’t want the dessert to finish. The presentation was amazing. |There’s something on the menu for everyone and all diets considered. |The service was impeccable, friendly but remaining professional. |My room was in the attic overlooking the gardens and I slept extremely well. There are different standard of rooms to suit all and dog friendly available. |Breakfast was set up outside on the lawn for us, under an umbrella, the choice on offer was extensive. |Again, presented perfectly and tasted amazing. |The walks around the grounds are stunning. |This is a place to stay!

Lunch today was a delight, and all the staff welcoming, friendly and efficient. It was hard to choose from the appetising menu, but all our dishes were superb and so beautifully presented. The dining room is charming, with original panelling and crests, and the decor in the various reception rooms has a relaxed elegance. It was a glorious day, and most people hose to eat outside, to enjoy the magnificent views. The gardens and extensive grounds are a bonus, and well worth exploring. We've eaten here many times, and it's always a joy to return.

The rooms and location are fabulous if you like gardens and countryside. You can’t see another building or road just amazing scenery. The service let my visit down for me slightly, the staff on reception were excellent, friendly and fun but the waiting staff could have done a much better job. I didn’t feel like a valued customer at all and I was staying there for 3 nights. I will return however because everything else including the food was incredible.

The hotel, originally built in 1810, is as charming as the photographs show. The staff are friendly and go the extra distance. So, why an “average” rating? The rooms are beautiful the only problem is that they come with bathrooms. These were outdated and in need of modernization. Very few rooms have showers instead they have Victorian style baths with showers. These require that you climb over the high ridge to get into the tub without the use of any support handles then, with footing unsure , you turn on the water using a very dated system of faucets and valves. This works OK if you are physically fit and capable of maintaining your balance. The bottom line? The Endsleigh could install grab bars in every such bathroom. An inexpensive fix. Better still they could replace the baths with proper walk in showers.

Fabulous hotel for wedding anniversary celebration. We received a really warm welcome and our room was ready early. We booked the lowest priced room but it was so comfortable and had a lovely walk in shower. The hotel is situated in stunning grounds and gardens which were lovely to walk around or simply sit and relax in. The highlights of the stay were the amazing staff and service and the excellent food. We had lunch, afternoon tea, dinner and breakfast and could not fault anything. Simply superb!!

Deliciously decadent Afternoon tea. Scrumptious. Everything so beautiful. Approachable staff. Gorgeous selection of finger sandwiches, goats cheese gougere, old cornish and apricot sausage roll with a tomato gazpacho followed by sherry trifle, strawberry vanilla chantilly, lemon & raspberry meringue tart, chocolate choux au craquelin with scones, cream and jam. As in Devon , cream on first, of course. Topped off with a glass of champagne. Walked it off with a saunter around the beautiful, aromatic gardens. |Ooh, had a plate of jellies wishing us a Happy Anniversary too. Very lovely.

A stunning hotel: in a magical and bucolic setting. The magnificent gardens and grounds offer a variety of walks and places to sit and relax and admire the views. The hotel is a stunning "cottage" that is beautiful inside and out - nice touches by keeping the old fire hoses, buckets and telephones along the corridors and stunning decor everywhere. We stayed in Suite 1 with huge French windows directly onto the garden, as well as views from the sitting room on to the parterre that was planted with pink, lilac and white flowers. The bed was huge and comfortable, the bath was big enough to swim in. Luxurious robes and slippers provided. The staff were all friendly, professional and charming.|Genuinely dog-friendly too.
