Nice, clean and quaint hotel, centrally located in the middle of the walking zone with shopping and plazas surrounding it. Narrow streets with cars banned after 11 am. So time your arrival and departure by car so you don't have to haul your luggage three blocks to the hotel. Also try to book room away from very noisy streets due to vibrant and cloudy nightlife. Great for people who enjoy engaging in social and noisy nightlife or shopping.

Due to inability to book my entire stay at either hotel, I had occasion to stay at both Hotel Moderno and Hotel Europa back to back. Extremely close in price, but not close in terms of value. Moderno is well located, though not quite as well located as Europa, which offers one of the best street views in Madrid. For the same price you get a bigger room, a better view, and a nice cafe with indoor and outdoor seating at Europa. The room at Moderno had no view. I did not have the breakfast at Europa, but was not very impressed with what they served at Moderno. I know it's traditional Spanish fair, but bread, cheeses and a variety of cured meats doesn't do it for me, especially on consecutive days. I know it's a minor thing, but Europa has a nicer and larger lobby and just has a better feel to it. ||||The front desk staff was very pleasant to deal with and the check in and check out processes were very smooth. Not sure whether it's one price whether you check in a little early or very early, but when I arrived, about 3-4 hours before the official check in time, I think they offered me an available room for 25 Euros. I declined, because there was no rush. When I returned, my bags had been moved from storage to the room, a nice touch||||The 5 star rating does not indicate it's a spectacular property, but that it delivers value commensurate with the price.

The location was the only thing good in this hotel. The staff barely speaks English, considering Madrid being a touristic destination it’s useful to hire bilingual or trilingual staff members. The room was awful, we had to change our room because the shower in the bathroom was open “an attempt to be modern” but when you open the faucet the water gets all over the bathroom, literally flooding everywhere. The second room we were moved to was fine in terms of the bathroom, however, the bed was too small for two, uncomfortable, and it was hard to get any good night sleep because of the noise almost all the time.

The hotel is clean and the staff is professional and helpful. My room however looked nothing like the room in the photos (see my photo). The hotel is very very basic and in need of upgrades. The noise from the plaza made it very difficult to sleep. My windows did not lock. Not many good dining options immediately around the hotel area. Recommended for the budget traveler. I had hoped for much more, especially for a Friday rate of 277 euros per night. There are many better choices in the city. Do your research.

The property is in a convenient location to walk to shops/restaurants. After 11am, the taxi cannot drop off/pick up directly in front of hotel. The staff are friendly However, the room is in the 60s and the free WiFi did not work in the room(only in the lobby). The sound insulation is minimal so you will hear the sound from other rooms as well as from the window

Google
Great location on the lively Plaza. be prepared for the possibility of noise in the evenings our balcony window allow us a good night sleep. The staff was very helpful and the room well equipped. The room was clean and comfortable small. walking distance to many cultural sites and excellent restaurants.

I had an excellent stay. Bonus they had a celebration to turn on the Christmas lights at the plaza and you could see it from the balcony. Room is nicely spaced and clean. Good place to come back to after exploring all day.

Excellent service! All the staff were very helpful and attentive. Wonderful view outside our balcony. Large shower was wonderful. Would certainly stay again! It's very walkable and great location.

Yelp
Great location; clean, serviceable room, short walk to Metro; helpful knowledgeable front desk staff. we only ate here once- breakfast buffet was great and they even had gluten free croissant for me! I would stay here again if I ever return to Madrid.

Yelp
Very cozy- excellent service- comes with breakfast and conveniently close to downtown area. Restaurants all around. Highly recommend if ur in Barcelona to stay.

Yelp
Location location location. This was another Rick Steves pointer. In addition to the book, he mentions it in the show. It's right near the Puerto Del Sol metro stop in Madrid's version of a much larger and pedestrianized Times Square. A mayor nicknamed "The Mole" did multiple "big digs" which put the traffic underground here, and in much of the city. It makes for a great walking city (unlike, for instance, Rome, where you often feel woozy like you were sucking exhaust fumes, because you are). The outward looking rooms are likely fine for people watching, but have to be noisy. The interior rooms are on a small courtyard and silent. The small restaurant was good, but with a limited breakfast selection. Tables outside for scoping the crowd. They are clean freaks. One morning I found people on ladders all over cleaning the place. Hot consume in the lobby was nice in January. The staff were all friendly and helpful. This is also the starting point for the excellent (and free) Rick Steves Audio Europe phone app walking tour of Madrid.

Yelp
We only had 2 nights in Madrid so we wanted a location that was close to the sights. Pros: Center of the city, you can walk anywhere from here. 5 minute walk to Mercado San Miguel and a 10-12 minute walk to the Royal Palace. Tons of places to eat and shop nearby. Price per night was great and the place was super clean. Cons: The beds were a little hard and the room had this bright flashing light thing attached to the smoke detector. They start cleaning really early, like 8:00am and they're noisy when doing so.

Simon L.

Yelp
Yeah, so, cockroaches in the room. Called front desk to clear them. Did so, but wouldn't change our room. Then at check out they tried to charge us for the phone call down to the front desk regarding the cockroaches. Oh, also, behind our toilet there was a door/window that opened to what I am assuming was an abandoned elevator shaft? No apologies, or discounts either. Oh! No AC either.

Yelp
Pros: Great hotel just steps away from the heart of Puerta del Sol plaza Great, nice staff at front desk, helpful to our English speaking family Very close to everything Good A/C Very clean Wifi free Quiet courtyard facing room in that we never heard the 24 hour crowds outside our hotel Mini-refrigerator in room Decent breakfast in hotel (per US standard) Cons: Small rooms Thin walls to hallway outside door Staff cleans thoroughly and early! Noisy! Beds were hard-ish Overall: would highly recommend doing, price competitive but this has best location, we did not need to rent a car

Yelp
Great location on a side street off Puerta del Sol and walking distance to everything, even to the 3 main Madrid museums. All rooms are quiet, even those facing the Plaza, because of the thick double pane glass on the windows. There's also a metal shade that you can roll down to darken the room. The whole place is sparkling clean. Their coffee shop serves a cafe con leche and a croissant at the counter for 2.2 euros, and opens early. You can catch the tourist bus and also grab a taxi across from the plaza. Puerta del Sol is craziness and it's fun to watch all that's going on even late into the night because Madrilenos never sleep! The hotel staff will reserve a taxi to take you to the airport in advance. Best to let them know the night before you leave. The cab will pick you up at the hotel's door at the time you specify. The only drawback to this hotel are the hard beds and pillows. Kind of uncomfortable after walking around Madrid for miles sightseeing, so 4 stars.

Yelp
All I wanted was a nice meal instead I get a horrible experiance. I ate at a hotel because I thought they would share a good knowledge on Coeliac Disease. The waiter seemed to know and rejected looking at my leaflet. I ordered a Vegetable Soup however when I got it, it was awful, it had no flavour and was just vegetables floating in water. That was 8.50€ as well what was terrible considering how bad it was. I actually asked to not pay for the soup and speak to the manager however the talks were unsuccesful and I had to pay up. The manager did not speak English so my waiter had to act as the translator, paying that amount flor soup without the bread is terrible especially for that quallity. My drink was also wrong they served me Pineapple Juice instead of Apple and the Apple Juice was small once replaced and just didnt taste right. One positive however is I was asked if I wanted Ice or not, to be honest all places should do this and it is sad that is the only positive I leave with.

Yelp
This was the perfect place for my wife and me to spend three nights in Madrid. The location is ideal with easy access to the metro and within walking distance from great art museums. We were entertained by two large demonstrations in the plaza that our balcony overlooked. They were nonviolent with a strong police presence. We never felt threatened or afraid at all. The staff at the hotel was very helpful and accommodating throughout our stay. The rooms are spacious, clean, and decorated in a minimalistic style. The rates are quite reasonable also. We dined in the restaurant of the hotel the first night, and really enjoyed the well-prepared and presented dishes. Virtually everyone else in the restaurant was speaking Spanish, which we took as an indication that it draws locals--a very good sign. We are very glad that we stayed in this hotel and recommend it highly.

Yelp
As others have said, location gets 5 stars. It is as close the heart of Madrid as you can get. And their towels are awesome. We had trouble dressing our little girl as she just wanted to stay wrapped up in those towels. So why only 2 stars. Because it's hard to sleep when you're sweating. As others have said, the AC is a real problem for them. Our room was so hot, I called and someone came up to check that we knew how to work the thermostat. It finally got cool enough to sleep about 3 am (all of us were on top of our sheets). The next day I again called and someone came up and checked the fuse, the thermostat, and put his hand up to the vent and said "yeah, it's not working". So, they moved us to another room which was much better but still not great. I've read other reviews where they got fans...for some reason we couldn't so we went to Ingles and bought two but it still wasn't enough. The staff are nice and helpful, the rooms are great, and the location is outstanding. If they would just spend the money and upgrade the air conditioning, it would easily be a 5 star review. We left Madrid and went to the Hotel Atlantis in Barcelona and while their towels were nothing compared to Hotel Europa, their AC blew snow. For me, I'll take AC over nice towels any day. We slept like babies in Hotel Atlantis in Barcelona with the AC freezing and us buried under blankets loving it. At Hotel Europa, several nights we laid there sweating trying to sleep. As they moved us to another room (on the same floor) the guy did say everyone on that floor was having issues. They did upgrade us and we appreciated that. They did all they could to make our stay great...but you need the AC to work in a hotel when it's 100 degrees in Madrid. Another tip, don't eat at their restaurant on the street. Terrible service and very expensive. So many better choices.

Yelp
Location, location, location. Let me say it a little more clearly, THIS HOTEL IS LOCATED IN THE BEST POSSIBLE LOCATION TO SEE MADRID. It is literally steps away from Puerta del Sol which is the center of the old city. From Hotel Europa you can easily walk to Plaza Major or the Royal Palace. The hop-on / hop-off bus stops 100 yards from their front door. Like all hotels in Europe the rooms are a little on the small side, but you don't go to Madrid to spend time in your room. Even though the rooms are a little small, they are clean, modern, quiet, and comfortable. The hotel staff speaks English well, and they are VERY helpful. While this is probably rated as a four star hotel in Europe, it's closer to a nice three star hotel in the USA. We've stayed here before, and we'll stay here again. We've referred many friends here, and they've all been happy. If Marriott owed it, it would be 400 Euro a night, but at closer to 100 Euro a night it's a bargain. Here's a tip, eat breakfast at the buffet next door to save a few dollars.

Yelp
Like another reviewer mentioned, this was by far the nicest hotel I stayed in while traveling in Spain. When I stayed there, there was some construction occurring, so the hotel lobby was chaotic and noisy, but the staff went the extra mile to help guests and be accommodating. (The hotel had also reduced rates during the construction). The staff spoke some English. The location could not be beat for tourist destinations. My room was an interior one, so I did not have a view of the city from my balcony, but it was extremely quiet given the area. The room was extremely clean, spacious, and simply but comfortably decorated. I loved the parquet wood flooring and the large bathroom with marble floors, walls, everything. I appreciated free wi-fi that actually worked well, TV with several English channels, early check-in, and assistance booking an airport shuttle.

Yelp
A well presented and clean hotel. This hotel is value for money. The staff are well versed in several languages and extremely knowledgable about tourist type activities. Staff are polite and well-trained. The hotel itself is very clean, relatively modern furnishing and smell clean, unlike other hotels in Madrid that smell like a sewer or smokers' lounge. Free wifi and excellent outside seating area for people-watching and taking in Madrid. Restaurant is a little on the pricey side but service makes up for it.

Yelp
My husband and I stayed at Hotel Europa for 5 nights and loved it. The location was fantastic for sightseeing (metro very close) and the staff were attentive and very helpful. This is the second time that we have stayed there and it was great each time. We ate in the hotel restaurant each morning and two evenings. I highly recommend the paella. JG

Yelp
Recently my family and I stayed at Hotel Europa. We purchased the breakfast meal plan. Big mistake! On the first day, the speedy disinterested waiter rushed us to a table and served us each scrambled eggs, 3 pieces of ham, a hard as a rock bread, an unpeeled kiwis and uncleaned looking pears. On the second day, same of the old sub standard food and scrambled eggs when we had asked for fried eggs. Of course we did not send the scrambled eggs back since it's not recommended, especially at this hotel. On the last day, we decided to go elsewhere for breakfast.

Yelp
Great hotel in an amazing location. A bit noisy at nights but that's because it's in the center of everything. It's like being in time square. The staff were amazing and helpful. We asked lots of questions and they patiently helped us.

Yelp
This was the first hotel in which we stayed upon our arrival in Spain. We got in about 9am and were asked to wait only a few minutes for the keys to a room, so we dined on cafe con leches and churros at the adjoining Cafe Europa. Once we were checked into our room we were delighted to see the view from the fourth floor overlooking Plaza del Sol. Everything was very clean and comfortable, and since we planned to return to Madrid in the next two weeks for our flight out, we went ahead and booked another stay with Hotel Europa. It's location in the center of the city (steps away from the Metro) make it conveniently located to almost everything you could want to see in Madrid. The staff is impeccable and everyone we spoke to was fluent in English. We enjoyed the cafe for breakfast two more times and the outdoor patio for a drink as well. After moving from hotel to hotel we were glad to return to Europa for our second stay and were again rewarded with a lovely room overlooking the square. It can be a bit noisy at night, but all in all this is is a top-notch establishment and among the nicest hotels we visited in the country.

Yelp
Location is PRIME for feeling the energy of Madrid, and the best possible center point for radial trips to all major attractions in the city by foot or rail (- Sol metro just steps from the hotel. ) clean, accommodating and value priced. English speaking staff. Great landmark bakery on Plaza for Madrileno style "breakfast." We stayed 4 nights in April '15 in an inner room with no noise issues. Hotel Europa is known as one of best places in Madrid for NYE.

L V.

Yelp
The hotel is in a good location, IF you are OK with hearing the all-night partying Madrid is known for. It's in the middle of Puerta del Sol. Unfortunately the exterior was under construction and there was a sign on the window that it shouldn't be opened. However, it was so hot and stuffy (even in February) that we had to open the window (and thus be subjected to all the noise). The bed was rather hard, but overall the room was nice. It had a shower stall which we wanted.

Lil D.

Yelp
Decent amenities, clean room, but the location gets 5 stars. Literally steps away from the Puerta del Sol Metro exit so you don't have to haul luggage far. There's a lift in the hotel so no worries there either. Within walking distance to many attractions and shopping. Lots of restaurants in the area to choose from. Staff was friendly and helpful and speaks English (depending who is on duty). Ask for a quiet room or risk hearing all the activities in the plaza. The restaurant below provided a quick breakfast before heading out for the day's journey. With metro station steps away, it is a great access to connect to other sites and day trips outside Madrid.

Yelp
Hotel increíble, un servicio excelente y profesional, habitaciones muy limpias, espaciosas y acogedoras, realmente disfruté de mi estancia allí.

Eliza L.

Yelp
This hotel is a great value with a terrific location. The staff is helpful and the rooms are clean. Rooming over the Plaza is a big plus OR a major concern when demonstrations or events occur late into the night, so consider your personal preference. Major alert: Nonsmoking poicy WAS NOT TAKEN SERIOUSLY and smoking is widespread throughout Spain. If smoking presents a health hazard or just irritates you, consider other options. This hotel is a smoker's paradise, and the place reeks, including nonsmoking rooms.
