The Best Hotels in Iceland, From Rural Lodges to Reykjavik Boutiques

"From Stykkishólmur, travelers can also jump onto the Westfjords ferry, plodding its way through the thousands of rocks, skerries, and islands in the fjord Breiðafjörður before calling into port on the southern edge of Iceland’s least-visited region. But along the way, the ferry makes a mysterious stop at Flatey, the only populated island in the fjord, a wistful place dotted with a handful of colorful houses. Time moves differently here; stay at the island hotel even for just an evening and you’ll feel yourself slipping into the off-kilter rhythm of an Icelandic summer. Hazy golden light falls across the rocky shores and surrounding seascapes, birds cry out as they wheel in the air, and long grass shimmers and waves in the wind as you stumble around in a daze, wondering as travelers so often do in Iceland: is this place real? The humble Hotel Flatey opens only in the summer (in winter the population of the island is around five people), offering comfortable rooms across several 19th-century homes. The interiors are poetically Scandinavian, with a clean and uncluttered design pulled straight from the pages of a magazine. The hotel restaurant serves as the island’s pub and lounge, where locals and summer blow-ins gather in the evening to swap stories and enjoy a warm meal. The entire experience feels like being welcomed into the home of a distant Icelandic relative."

30 Secret Islands to Visit for the Ultimate Secluded Vacation

"In town, Hotel Flatey stays true to simple Scandinavian design (blond-wood furniture, whitewashed walls), and the downstairs restaurant is a superb spot for local, fresh, seafood-centric fare." - Travel + Leisure Editors

It’s only fair to start by saying that Hotel Flatey is located on a truly stunning island, where few people stay during summertime, dotted with scattered little houses and groups of sheep. The hotel is the only real accommodation option on the island, offering cozy rooms and a space where anyone can enjoy breakfast, aperitifs, and meals. It’s about a 10-minute walk from the port — a pleasant stroll — and we were kindly assisted by the owner, Sandra, a wonderful person who came to pick up our luggage by car, while we enjoyed the walk. The hotel is set along the coast, right in front of a small bay, with a garden that extends directly into the water. The property is made up of two buildings: the main one, where most of the rooms are located along with the dining area and some loungers outside; and a second, smaller compound where our room was. It was on the second floor, with a nice view of the sea. The room itself was small but very charming and comfortable — we slept incredibly well. The bathroom was shared, but it didn’t bother us at all, as we were the only guests and so had plenty of privacy. Sandra gave us lots of helpful tips for exploring the island, which is truly beautiful. We also had dinner at the hotel and really enjoyed it — in a large, welcoming dining room. We arrived just as the hotel had reopened for the season, so it was still quiet and the live music program hadn’t started yet. Overall, the experience was absolutely amazing — both because of the magical location and the hotel itself. You can take walks around the island at any time of day — in the morning, after dinner, or just whenever you feel like it. It’s the perfect place to relax and disconnect.

The restaurant serves the best steak I have ever tasted — perfectly cooked, incredibly tender, and bursting with rich, smoky flavor. Each bite melts in your mouth, and the seasoning is just right, enhancing the natural taste of the meat without overpowering it. It's truly a standout dish that sets this place apart from any other steakhouse I've

An amazing and remote hotel in middle of Breiðafjörður on the beautiful island Flatey. Only accessible by a ferry. Great food and drinks and service is top class. They have kayaks for rent and bird and animal lovers would love to be there.

I arrived in Flatey a bit tired and disoriented... Starving... I rushed to the only restaurant of the island, I was alone there, so I was also a bit stressed... Then Lily came to explain the menu, and she went literally extra miles to make me feel confortable, I felt like she was waiting for me, serving me delicious food and wine, and absolutely charming the whole lunch! It made my day, and my experience in Flatey, I absolutely enjoy the island after that. So thank you Lily, I guess you welcome a lot of people everyday, but keeping this sense of service and kindness is exceptional!!

Our stay on Flatey made for the best serene adventure. We were the first guests of the season at Hotel Flatey and the only tourists staying overnight on the island. This made for a rejuvenating solitude. It was fascinating to explore the tiny island, and imagine what life was like back in the heyday when it was a cultural epicenter. It was fascinating to imagine what life is like now, during a busy tourist season and during the dead of winter when only two farmers (who apparently have no affection for each other…) call the island home. Our room had a view that I don’t have adequate words to describe. You could throw the windows open wide (if the winds allow), and be lulled to sleep by the ocean waves (best to bring your eye mask for the midnight sun). I fully recommend the suite in the second house to you. The bed was VERY soft. I could see it being too soft for the firm bed folks - but I think you all are crazy, personally. There were two bathrooms in our building. I could see this being a unique experience to work around when there’s actually a full house. But hey, having to share amenities also creates beautiful opportunities for connection. The staff were so kind and attentive. We got to know one of the waitresses a bit, who shared some beautiful descriptions and tips that have us making plans for our next Iceland adventure. She also was kind enough to whip us up “Flajitos”- the Flatey mojito, made with pickled rhubarb. We also got to know one of the chefs, who made incredible food (mushroom soup from a recipe passed down from an Icelandic grandma?!) and also hung out and chatted with us as we waited for our departing ferry. Loved this. Give it a go. In case it’s helpful: you can’t drive your car on to the island. Instead, you have to purchase the appropriate ticket and arrange to have the ferry staff drive your car off at the other side and park it. It will be waiting for you to arrive when you make the rest of your voyage. Very slick.

We loved this beautiful hotel on Flatey island. It is a bed and breakfast, you have your own room and shared toilet and shower. Small but cosy in a very old but beautifully renovated house. ||The breakfast was wonderful. The ambiance was wonderful. The island was wonderful, no... magical. The lunch was fish and chips for me and my wife had the loval herring platter from the island. Both were phenomenal. ||After ealking the island and admirering the bird life we had some drinks at the Salt cellar and then dinner that night at the hotel. I had a wonderful blue ling as fresh as ever and my wife had mussels fresh from Breiðarfjörður that she described as the best ever (she loves mussels and is a connoisseur). ||The day after we had a gumbo (ja ja) with chicken made by the cook that eorks in New Orleans||This is mu favorite place in Iceland to travel, relax and enjoy good fooda
