The 85 Best Airbnbs and Vacation Rentals in the World, According to Super-Travelers

"The Hotel Flora is an ivy-clad 17 th -century palazzo tucked down a narrow alleyway in San Marco. It’s hidden from the crowds, but still an easy stroll to the buzz of San Marco Palazzo and the Grand Canal. Like all grand Venetian homes, it’s had its share of interesting inhabitants over the years, including a School of Painting, a salon for well-known local artists. Continuing the artistic legacy, the Romanelli family—photographers, writers, and antique collectors among them—has owned the hotel for the last 50 years. In the classic manner of a pension, the hotel is intimate and the staff welcoming and friendly. Rooms are cozy and decorated with traditional antique furnishings, heavy drapes, and bold brocade wallpaper in some. Pop down to the Victorian-styled bar for an aperitif, or linger over an espresso with a good read in the hushed garden."

Friuli-Venezia Giulia Is an Italy Far Removed from Its Stereotypes

"We stayed up well past the crowds, scurrying over empty bridges on glistening canals on our way to the Hotel Flora in the San Marco district, a marvelous mix of a grand hotel and a cherished pensione with staff perfectly cast for a Wes Anderson film."

Hotel Flora | Best places to stay in Venice

"This picturesque hotel, with its creeper-covered façade, period furniture and hibiscus-filled garden, is a rare good-value gem in this pricey city. The family-run Flora is housed in a 17th-century palazzo and is particularly good for families, with pushchairs and kids’ menus available, but its romantic setting will also appeal to loved-up couples. The pretty garden is a delightful setting for breakfast before setting out for a day’s sightseeing. The Flora is minutes away from some of the city’s most compelling monuments such as the Scala del Bovolo, a magnificent spiral staircase, and St. Mark’s Square itself. It also lies just off Via XXII Marzo, the city’s glitziest shopping thoroughfare, folded within the tiny alleys that weave a labyrinth out of Venice’s throbbing San Marco heartland. We absolutely loved our stay at Hotel Flora. The location is perfect—tucked back in a quiet little alley, yet just steps away from the hustle and bustle of Venice. The peaceful courtyard was one of our favorite parts, filled with lush plants, cozy seating, and magical lighting. It was the perfect spot to relax after a long day exploring the city. The hotel’s vintage charm is unbeatable. From the intricate wallpaper to the unique art and lighting, everything feels authentic and timeless, like stepping into old-world Venice that has been lovingly maintained. Service was top notch. The front desk staff went above and beyond, giving us great recommendations and even booking a private water taxi for us at 4am. Breakfast was another highlight—beautiful dish ware, delicious food. Honestly, this hotel topped all four of the places we stayed during our trip to Europe, even outshining a 5-star property in the Dolomites. If I had to nitpick one thing, it’s that there are no blackout curtains, so pack a sleep mask if you’re sensitive to early morning light. For the quality, service, and charm, the price felt very reasonable. Do yourself a favor and stay here when you visit Venice—you won’t regret it!

Not sure Hotel Flora could have been any more perfect. Room was wonderful. The staff was superior and so knowledgeable and friendly. I wouldn’t hesitate to stay here next time I visit Venice. They deserve more than five stars.

I was thrilled with my stay at Hotel Flora and it exceeded my expectations. My room had an amazing balcony with views of both the mountains and the lake, and I spent many happy hours with a drink / reading there. The hotel is a handy 5 minute walk from Carciano ferry station where you can travel to the Borromean Islands and various other towns along the lake. My room was clean and very well cleaned daily. The breakfast was fabulous... a huge choice and sweet and savoury items. And to top it off the staff were all incredibly helpful and lovely. A 5* experience! Highly recommend.

I love this surprising and remarkable hotel. I had no idea it would be this amazing. It’s a hidden treasure from the busy Venice streets. I was welcomed with smiles by the owners, the scent of roses is in the air, and a welcoming conversation for me because it was my first time there about the beauty and amenities that Venice has to offer. The location was perfect, you can walk to everything (restaurants, gondolas, shopping, sights) from the hotel. During check in, you have a view of the loveliest private garden, it’s peaceful, a vintage bar stocked with local wines and top shelf spirits is there. I missed the complimentary breakfast unfortunately because I was so happy waking up in the morning from the luxury mattress and bed linens, looking out the Venetian blinds at the Italian rooftops. I couldn’t get up. You will get a personal tour of the hotel as you make your way through the flowers and the pristine designed staircase up to your private room. The staff will make restaurant and experience recommendations and book your dinner reservations also. The room I stayed in was immaculately organized and stocked, clean and the incredible Italian sunshine steamed through my windows with a perfect view of the terracotta rooftops, the dome and the view down to the garden. The mattress was so sleep inducing for me, the room was quiet and peaceful. The bathroom clean and fresh plus well-stocked with luxury local lotions, potions and soaps. I love being in a hotel where I can walk barefoot in my room without feeling crumbs or sand on my feet! Throughout the hotel, there is no view that isn’t beautiful, and every step you notice the details like the wall paper, the light fixtures, the flower vases and books. There is even a record player in the classic bar area spinning Coltrane’s “Blue Train.” I conducted significant online research to find a woman-solo-travel-friendly, 24/7 staffed, centrally located but quiet slightly upscale hotel in Venice, and the experience provided by the hotel exceeded my expectations. I wanted an authentic Venetian experience, and I got it. I highly recommend this hotel for those seeking beauty, comfort, design, lush mattresses and pillows, quiet, good vibes, super clean, and in-house delicious wines and food.

Just returned from a fabulous 3 days in Venice. The hotel gets 5* for so many reasons. The hotels itself of so tastefully preserved /decorated, making it a beautiful authentic place to stay. The location is perfect, just a 2 minute walk from St marks and the family and staff are all lovely. Will stay again and be recommending to family and friends alike.

Google
At a time when most hotels are run by corporations and funds, this one is still managed by its owners — and that makes all the difference. It gives you the feeling that anything is possible. Thank you Gioele and Heiby for the wonderful treatment. If you ever go to Venice, you must at least stop by for a coffee in their beautiful garden — and hopefully stay at one of their places. They offer a few different options depending on what you need. Three generations have been running this business, and you can feel the difference.

Our family stayed here for 3 nights as part of our 2 weeks trip in Italy. A lovely boutique hotel. The staff is always courteous and friendly. The room is clean. A continental breakfast was included in the room rate. The location is so convenient to everywhere. We would love to stay here again.

Yelp
Hotel Flora was a great place to stay in Venice and I would stay here again. The rooms were roomy and comfortable. The courtyard was a great place to either have breakfast or drinks in the later afternoon/evening. The staff was great, in particular Nicoletta and Christian and they easily helped facilitate restaurant reservations as well. The location was excellent, a short walk to St. Mark's Square.

Yelp
Can't find their sister property, Hotel Novecento, so we'll rate it here. Smashing! Lovely staff especially the young lady at breakfast, quite possibly the happiest and kindest person I have ever met. Room superb. Location amazing. Only downside was the impossibly tiny shower, large enough for a one-legged flamingo. Regardless, highly recommended. Sadly, we won't be back to the Novecento because we think we'd try the family flagship Hotel Flora on a subsequent visit. Bravo Venizia! Thank you for your hospitality, beauty, and wonderful memories. We'll be back.

Yelp
Very charming Lobby and veranda. This hotel seems to be a cute boutique hotel . When I entered our room, it was very rustic. The mattress was saggy and uncomfortable.Almost like the maids quarters! The wood beams had some dust strings hanging down and there was small flies in the corridor that came into the room. Then the huge spider was in sight! This room was not like our family members room . Their room was beautiful the bed comfy. Both bathrooms were nice and comfy. I asked if I can change rooms and arrogantly was denied. I know that this is Europe but seeing the other room I feel like my room is not the standard of the other rooms compared to the other reviews . I will update my review

Yelp
We are very pleased with our choice for our stay in Venice. The rooms are not large but they are comfortable. The staff are very willing to assist you in any way they can. The location near St. Marks Square is very convenient. During our stay they had a wonderful breakfast for us. We have had a great time.

Yelp
We were hesitant about staying in Venice. My husband had a traumatizing experience as a child and went through reviews and photos with a fine-toothed comb before finding this little gem. The hotel is about a 2-minute walk from Piazza San Marco. It's at the end of a narrow hall which leads to some of the best, high-end shopping in Venice. Please note, this property is NOT on the water, and sometimes that can be a good thing (no mosquitos, for starters...) We were immediately checked-in upon arrival, just before 1pm. Our room was ready and we were given the option of elevator or stairs. The hotel gives you the feeling of being transported to another era, with it's antique décor and classic service. I found most of Venice to be this way and I loved it. The room was nicely appointed. Perfectly made-up bed and you could tell it was going to be comfortable. Clean, crisp white duvet and pillows. The room was spacious, although the bathroom could have been just a tad bigger. The towels smelled delicious. Not just clean, they had the very faint smell of lavender with the hotel's logo on them. Very lush. The bathroom was clean and everything functioned properly. There is a small note on behalf of the family and it was nice to find small details like that. Our window overlooked the long, narrow hallway which led to stores such as Bulgari and Loro Piana. Now to the breakfast - which is included. One of the best breakfasts we had on our entire 3-week trip. It is served buffet style, in stations. In the center of the room you have baked goods - croissants, breads, cakes, cookies, etc. Along the walls you have different styles of eggs (some are hard-boiled heart-shaped, yes, heart-shaped), bacon, breakfast meats, cold meats, etc. Next we move on to the cheese selection, jams, puddings, fresh fruit, yogurts and parfaits. They also had about 3-4 different types of juices and coconut water. I could go on. You have the option of sitting indoors or out on the terrace. Outside is just lovely - but beware of the pigeons! They have absolutely no shame in picking at your perfect heart-shaped egg! Once you're seated, they will take your hot beverage order and bring out some of the prettiest designed cappuccinos you've ever had. On our last morning, we headed to the airport at 6:45am. Knowing that, the staff mentioned the night before that they would put out a few selections for us to enjoy before we left. This is where they got me. Breakfast didn't begin until 7 or 7:30. I was expecting a cup of coffee and stale croissant. No - he made sure to have a few things ready for us and those croissants were straight out of the oven!! They also brought us cheeses, jams, cured meats and a few other things, plus my beautiful cappuccino. This is where they went ABOVE AND BEYOND. 5 Stars and A++ on service, cleanliness, location - everything. I would stay here again in a heartbeat.

Yelp
This place is just OK. Had to cross 2 bridges to make the "short walk" from the airport boat with my 89 yr old Dad wrangling his 2 carry on bags. Today (day2) A/C broke while we were out for the day, came back to a darned hot room 27.7 Celsius. Tried to cool it and it went up to 29. Informed front desk when leaving for dinner. Returned to more hot air blowing and room now sauna-like 29.9 Celsius. Went to inform desk clerk, not there. Bar man said it was fixed 30 min ago, and has the repairman, who was chatting with him, come up to the room with me. He switched off the thermostat and said open the window. That's not exactly fixed in my book. After getting bitten by mosquitos for 2 nights with the window closed, I can only imagine what could happen tonight. Three trips to Italy in three years. If we come back to Venice we won't stay here again.

Yelp
Great boutique hotel in the heart of Venice. Easy walk from vaporretto stop from airport. Beautiful clean room with great amenities. Breakfast buffet or afternoon drinks on the garden courtyard out of the hustle of the streets. Concierge gave great advice in English as to wonderful restaurants and transportation. I will hopefully stay here again.

Yelp
Stayed here for 3 nights. 3 minutes minutes walk to San Marco square and to water bus. So no problem going to the airport (only 15 euro compare to taxi which is 110). Our flight was 0655a, earliest water bus was 0350a. Breakfast was really good, staff was nice and helpful. Hotel is little bit old but very very clean. Will stay here again next time.

Yelp
Hotel Flora is a quaint, quiet hotel with a beautiful courtyard and very friendly and helpful staff. Our room was clean and comfortable and the breakfast was extensive and delicious. The hotel's location is excellent, being in the heart of the city with high-end shopping and walking distance to major sites, but off the beaten path, so you are able to decompress without a lot of loud tourists around. I do not know his name, but the morning/day front desk attendant was very helpful, even getting us tickets to a Vivaldi concert at a local church. It was the perfect ending to our time in wonderful Venice.

Yelp
I chose the smallest room they had to save money, and it was still lovely. Very pretty place, amazing location, and very sweet, helpful staff. They were completely patient with my failed attempts to speak Italian and always friendly. You guys, they had scrambled eggs at breakfast! A very nice US home comfort while away.
