My friend and I - we both don't live too far from Amberg - spent a night in this unique prison hotel as first time offenders last year. We had been looking for something fun to do for her birthday and stumbled over Hotel Fronfeste. So of course we'd learned that what is now a lovely unique hotel had been in actual prison in previous years.||That said we figured the rooms might be former cells and therefore not as spacious as in many classic hotels. Upon arriving that anticipation was confirmed, but despite its small size our room/"cell" offered every comfort we needed. We enjoyed the authentic and humorous consistency of the prison theme. Breakfast was versatile, offering something for different likes and diets. ||For someone not living closeby and wanting to explore Amberg, the hotel's location just inside the remaining city walls and close to the old town center is very practical. Opportunities to shop or go out for dinner or drinks are in walking distance.

One the most strange hotel I've ever been! It's an old prison which has been completely renovated and transformed into a bed and breakfast. There are many kinds of room, most of them have been obtained from the old prison cells, so they are small and ideal for one or two people, but there are also bigger rooms, like the one I was, which was the prison director room and it's simple stunning. The staff is friendly and kind, dressed with police uniform to keep the prison theme, the place is amazing and there are many rooms to explore for take a picture. My room was wonderful but I can't give 5 stars because the problem with the shower outlet which was a bit annoying. Anyway I had a wonderful stay and the staff provided me extra towels to dry the bathroom. Nice continental breakfast, with a lot of fresh food. Probably the best hotel in Amberg.

We only stayed for one night so not a true impression of the Hotel. Our room had a bed surrounded with steel bars and steep steps up to the bed. I know its an old prison but for someone with mobility issues you are going to have a problem. The town is a nice place to visit for one night. The hotel has no parking of its own but there is a car park very close by.

The hotel is very good. Interesting concept. I spent two nights in room for 1 person. The room is small but well equipped. There was small window so I missed daylight and the door to main floor is not soundproofed. The breakfast was very good. Overall the hotel is good, you have to count with some specifics which keep the hotel close to the origin prison concept.

The hotel is just inside the walls of the city, and within walking distance to the city, and having the first guests only a few years back. It used to be an old prison, now converted with taste to a very nice hotel, retaining as much as possible the ambience and features of the building, including bars on windows, original prison doors to the rooms (including hatch), gates in corridors, tiling where possible. The rooms are all different, comfortable, with original features, as Peter, one of the owners, explained to us. He even cared to show us around the building. He was extremely helpful.||The room and the place were very clean, well kept, and a pleasure to be in. Breakfast was also very good, with a good variety of food. A free bottle of water was offered free of charge in the room.||The only 'fault' I can find is that the hotel does not have a lift. Otherwise very good. ||I would definitely recommend the hotel - for its uniqueness, excellent service, cleanliness and proximity to the centre.

Nice hotel within old town Amberg where you can walk to everything. Convenient parking garage behind hotel. You can purchase a parking pass for 10 euro for the duration of your stay. Staff is friendly. The optional breakfast buffet for purchase each day is perfect with a nice variety for its smaller size. The prison suite we stayed in was spacious and clean. We will be sure to stay here again when visiting Amberg in the future.

There’s actually some history behind this hotel, which makes its prison motif interesting without being creepy.|My wife was worried about the creepiness aspect, but she agreed it just wasn’t there. The rooms (very clean with a modern bathroom) had a historical feel without being run down. |The staff was polite and helpful. Parking garage is located behind the hotel and is a 30 second walk. Very convenient.|It’s a short walk to downtown Amberg, where there are plenty of restaurants and shopping areas.|Breakfast is good.|There are some interesting and humorous references throughout the hotel, to include the lobby restrooms (picture included).|I’ll stay here again if I’m in Amberg.

The rooms are small (they used to be jail cells after all) but are well furnished making the most out of the limited space. The rooms are clean and modern. The WiFi works well and the beds are comfy. The breakfast is 9EUR per Person extra, but is worth it. Lots of choice.
