11 Best Boutique Hotels in Tokyo (2023): Tokyo Edition, Aman Tokyo, & More | Condé Nast Traveler

"Top amenities: Seven restaurants; a library; gardens with waterfalls, bridges, and koi ponds What’s nearby: T-site bookstore in Daikanyama, cafes in Ebisu Lovers of history and art will have no shortage of ways to be inspired at this 60-room hotel, first built in 1928. The property contains paintings and elaborate woodwork from the Showa era, as well as its own museum: Hyakudan Kaidan. It's the only remaining part of the original building, where tatami rooms featuring Japanese artwork and historical artifacts are on display. Many of its 60 all-suite rooms are more than 800 square feet, and each one features its own private steam sauna and whirlpool bath. And its location in Meguro means it's just steps away from dining options, theaters, nightlife, and shopping." - Kristin Braswell

GAJOEN (Kirishima, Kagoshima Prefecture) Verified Reviews | Tablet Hotels

"The forested mountains of Kagoshima Prefecture, by the side of the Amorigawa River, are the setting for the exquisitely traditional and uncommonly tranquil Gaojen. Here thatched roofs disappear into the forest canopy, and the sound of the river finds echoes in the inn’s carved-stone onsen baths. These rooms were the first in Japan to feature private onsen baths, either on wooden terraces or in semi-open spaces. With ten suites it’s guaranteed to stay quiet; the pastoral setting includes a farm where much of Gajoen’s produce is grown, to be served alongside locally sourced meats and seafood." - Tablet Hotels

The hotel is beautiful, room was very spacious and comfortable, every possible detail thought of. Our room had ample closet space for a family of 4, gorgeous washroom with every possible toiletry provided (including face cleanser, toner, lotion, face masks - amazing quality). We loved the extra touches like comfortable bathrobes and pyjamas, the nice aroma throughout the hotel. The breakfast spread was amazing - do not miss it. We like the quite location away from the hustle and bustle but still very easy to get everywhere and access subway/trains.

Outstanding service, beautiful hotel, comfortable rooms. We are a family of four that traveled from Seattle and really enjoyed our stay. The rooms were spacious and comfortable, we especially loved the city views and the turn-down service every night. The staff was incredibly friendly and helpful. The buffet breakfast was delicious. We found the location to be convenient and we liked that it was in the city but not in the insanely busy areas like Shinjuku/Shibuya which were a bit overwhelming! We were sad to leave!

We’re staying at Hotel Gajoen Tokyo right now, and it’s one of those rare places where you feel the care in every small detail. A fan to cool off, handmade cookies from local artisans, a simple piece of origami—these little gestures tell a much bigger story about hospitality, culture, and tradition.||We found out the hotel will be closing soon for renovations, and that makes this visit feel even more special. It’s a quiet reminder to slow down, appreciate the moment, and honor the spaces that hold history.||Feeling really grateful to be here.||Oh shout out to the shuttle driver Alex - great conversations were had - such an energetic and optimistic person!

We had the most incredible stay at Hotel GAJOEN Tokyo—truly the most beautiful hotel we’ve ever stayed in. Every detail is thoughtfully designed in stunning Japanese style, creating such a peaceful and elegant atmosphere. Our room was exceptionally spacious, perfect for our family, and having a private steam room and jacuzzi in every room was such a special touch. We also loved spending time in the lounge, especially during happy hour—the food and drinks were amazing! The service, the ambiance, and the overall experience were unforgettable. We can’t wait to come back!

The view is amazing. The staff were very friendly and some of my favorite celebrities were there. I went shopping and even had a meal that I don't like, so I combined it with my favorite foods and felt like a celebrity (*´・ω・`)b Heart

I went for the museum exhibition. I thought it was interesting, but not as interesting as it's made out to be. If you're in the area it's a nice little stop but I wouldn't go far out of my way to go again

Google
5-star hotel experience. Uniquely beautiful hotel, particularly the common areas on the ground floor (including traditional Japanese garden) but also the rooms. It appears to be used frequently as a wedding venue (for good reason) but the wedding venue rooms appeared to be on different floors of the building so were not very noticeable. Location (Meguro) is somewhat away from the more central parts of Tokyo but easy enough to get around by metro/train.

I booked a Luxury room as a Hilton Diamond member. No upgrade however I was not aware at booking that there is an executive lounge and access was honored. This was my first experience at an SLH since the partnership with Hilton commenced.||The room itself was very spacious! I did not do any pre-arrival research and was pleasantly surprised by the 70 sq meter room. I was on the south side of the building and had a view of the small nearby river and cityscape. There was a large living room area with walk-in closet and. I would consider such a room a suite at any upscale hotel in Tokyo. I was also not prepared for a private whirlpool and steam sauna in the bathroom. With about 30 minutes of preparation time I had a private sauna experience which was a first for me. While one may come to Japan looking for an onsen experience this sort of amenity goes above and beyond that.||The hotel itself was also very spacious with lots of beautiful Japanese-inspired design and restaurant options. I had heard this place was often chosen for weddings and saw a couple taking pictures on the one night I was there. There was a really nice small garden with waterfall in the central area which was quite remarkable.||The hotel is located southwest of Meguro Station and while it is a relatively short walk you do have to go up and down a hill which may not be great for those with luggage or those less ambulatory. The hotel actually has a free shuttle to Meguro Station and also goes to Shinagawa Station three times in the afternoon. I have included a picture of the information. The Meguro shuttle stop is actually on the east side of the station.||I checked out the executive lounge on the eighth floor during cocktail hour. It was a very good sized lounge with plenty of tables to accommodate guests. The drink options were good and there were some really delicious snack options such as miso-infused cheese. That said, there was an imbalance in food offered to guest ratio as anything desirable was quickly scooped up as it was laid out. A delicious snack but nothing more than that as the seeming kitchen capacity and the other sharks in the water keep this from being a light meal.||I also had breakfast at Kanade Terrace on the first floor. While other hotels tend to have a balance between Western and Japanese options, the breakfast here skewed slightly more Japanese as one might expect of this type of hotel. That said, on the morning I went they also had carved roast beef. This is quite a luxurious option that I have only seen normally offered at the Conrad Osaka. ||Overall I had a really pleasant and great new experience. It was nice to experience this hotel, an SLH property, and it is good to see Hilton add a lifestyle type property to its Tokyo portfolio.

Yelp
Japanese beauty! I missed checking the famous stairs though. I wanna go back there soon!!! Quality: Higher. Price: Higher but worth it. Location: Walking distance from Meguro station. There are shuttle buses between Meguro station - Gajouen and Shinagawa station - Gajouen.

Yelp
We were lucky enough to have an early lunch at the buffet at the Gajoen hotel as part of a Ghibli Film Appreciation Tour we booked. The exterior of the spa of the hotel (which itself is inside the hotel) was the inspiration for a location in Miyazaki's film "Spirited Away." Walking around the interior of the hotel is like being in a Japanese luxurious fantasyland...gardens, bridges, artwork...even the bathrooms are a luxury experience you don't want to miss! (The ones past the buffet restaurant.) We found there was PLENTY for vegetarians to eat including a delicious pea soup, mac and cheese, rice dishes, as well as other western and Japanese inspired foods. I point this out, not just because we are vegetarians, but specifically because when we booked the tour (through a third party tour company) they went out of their way to let us know there would be no vegetarian food which was simply not the case at all. There was plenty to eat and drink, plus the dessert options were phenomenal. Go here. Eat here. Don't forget to pee!

Yelp
This hotel is absolutely INCREDIBLE! I felt like a princess here. It was the most luxurious experience and the restaurants downstairs were very good! Make sure you make reservations early though because their Chinese restaurant and Japanese ones are always fully booked all day. The staff treats you like royalty by the way, andddddd.... The bathroom had a STEAM ROOM next to the shower! It's so nice to just have that whenever I want to do a quick steam. Very good for you and it's so nice to just be able to do it in my own room and shower and sleep right after! Room service was amazing, they'll bring you everything you need! The room service food was even more phenomenal and their sushi was great! Imagine laying down on the most comfortable bed, watching anime and eating sushi?!!! I love this place. Check out these pictures I'll be posting of the bathroom and the outdoor area where you can take pictures where it looks like you're in complete nature!!! They did amazing in designing the place with all the little rivers and bridges. How cute!!! This is a HUGE hotel, but you'll find your way :)

Yelp
A beautiful hotel. When we arrived from Meguro station (a short walk with a bit of a hill), an artist was doing an ikebana (flower and plant arranging) demonstration in the front lobby. This pretty much set the tone for the entire stay, as every detail was well thought-out and aesthetically presented. There was art absolutely everywhere! Our room was a luxurious combination of traditional tatami plus Western comforts. There was a steam room in the giant bathroom! Our window overlooked the Meguro river, which I imagine in spring must a fantastic place to view cherry blossoms. The restaurants all looked great and we chose the New-American restaurant "Kanade Terrace", and received expert service of manager Mr. W. Nishantha who made us feel like family and regulars, even though it was our first visit. We will definitely be back!

Yelp
A very luxurious hotel in downtown Meguro. Only a 5 minutes walk from the Meguro Station. They offer a lovely wedding service as well as high end restaurants even if you are not staying the night.

Yelp
One of Meguro's best kept secrets and a surprise for Studio Ghibli fans. The Meguro Gajoen was a sort of department store back when it was built in the 30's and today its one of the best kept secrets for tourist and for those like me curious about the inspirations in Studio Ghibli films as it was the inspiration for the architecture in Spirited Away, 千と千尋の神隠し. Today its still a popular place for wedding planning and shopping as it was when it was first built, but for the casual guest its a great little museum hidden in the hills of Meguro. The Hyakudan Kaidan climbs the hills with a stairway of 100 steps which allow you see walk into one of 7 exhibit rooms with cultural art displays. Top Tip: Meguro might seem like a momentary stop to most people, but its one of my favorite locations in all of Tokyo. There's a lot going on here if you look hard enough!

Yelp
Lovely hotel to get married in and very fancy displays. I just love the large glass windows that give you a nice futuristic view. Best part of this place was the museum. They have traditional displays and trinkets but also use it in modern time. You Would have never felt that you were in a hotel being in that museum. Bring a camera everyone is challenging to take the best and most artistic photos. Give it a shot.
