LOCATION: Hotel Giacometti is located at Via San Francesco 1, in the heart of the Old Town. The boat pier (whence cruises on Lago Maggiore depart) and Locarno train station are both about 10 minutes away on foot. ||||When you exit the train station, head towards Piazza Grande in the Old Town, follow the cobblestoned street till you pass a Coop supermarket, further on you will find a steep slope on the Right, walk uphill and straight on till you see a small fountain with seating. There is a 3-storey, grey-and-peach-coloured building where Via Cittadella meets Via San Francesco, the Hotel is situated on its 2nd and 3rd floors. On the ground floor is a store named “Bottega del Mondo” and opposite the building is a pharmacy. ||||ROOM: We stayed in a room with an Andy Warhol theme; it was tastefully decorated in a quirky 'Pop Art' style. The clean and compact Room 7 was furnished with the following: double bed; small desk with reading lamp & chair; luggage rack; movable tray-table; copper footstool; shelving unit with night-light (shaped like a magical glowing mushroom!) and small table fan. By the door is a decorative fireplace.||||In a corner, they have installed a big mirror and glass shelf above a small wash basin. Mounted on the wall are a box of tissues and a hairdryer. ||||Room 7 has no windows but they found an ingenious solution for it: a rectangular opening has been made in the door to let in both daylight & fresh air. This small 'window' has a frosted glass-pane & pretty wrought-iron grille fixed over it; a semi-circular curtain rail has been installed around the doorway so you can have some privacy even when you leave the 'window' open...||||BED: clean and fairly comfortable. Bed linen was not changed during stay, probably to conserve energy & water. Extra blankets can be found on the top shelf of wardrobe (in the bathroom).||||BATHROOM: compact but equipped with all necessary amenities. It was immaculately clean and furnished with: a big wardrobe with ample storage space, hangers and extra toilet rolls; small shower stall; toilet; and a small chest of drawers.||||There was consistent flow of hot water and adequate water pressure. Ample clean towels were provided; these were changed every other day during our stay. Just 1 minor issue: bathroom door can't be locked...||||F&B: room rate was inclusive of daily breakfast which was served in a bright and airy courtyard. Breakfast provisions were simple but more than adequate: bread; cereals/mueslis; butter & delicious home-made jams; milk, cheese & yoghurt; hard-boiled eggs; fruit juices; coffee & tea. ||||SERVICE: Room Reservation, Check-In & Out proceeded smoothly despite the language barrier. The amicable couple who run this delightful B&B are fluent in Italian, French and German but trying to converse in English was somewhat problematic... Somehow we managed to communicate in a hodgepodge of Italian, English and atrocious French (on my part). ||||The Giacometti family was by far, the most gracious hosts we've ever stayed with, they really made us feel welcome in their home. The warm, convivial atmosphere here is fuelled by genuine hospitality. We were treated with such kindness and generosity that our stay in Locarno turned out to be the most memorable part of our month-long vacation.||||FACILITIES: the Breakfast Room also serves as a TV & Reading Room. Guests can enjoy complimentary coffee and tea as well as light snacks here. The mini-library is stocked with a varied collection of books and magazines plus comprehensive tourism-related information on file. There is a wall-mounted flatscreen TV with multi-channels; just be mindful of the TV volume as there may be guests in the adjacent rooms...||||IN SHORT: Locarno has plenty of accommodation options, you can easily find 1 that suits your needs and budget. If you want luxury or amenities like air-conditioning, business centre, laundry service, swimming pool, etc. then this little gem may not suit you. If you wish to enjoy genuine hospitality and a comfortable stay in a tranquil cosy environment, then Hotel Giacometti will surely not disappoint you.
