We had cockroaches in the room and when it rained water came through our bathroom ceiling and soaked the floor. Corridor carpets were stained and in places sticky underfoot and walls and woodwork were scuffed and chipped in many places.
The hotel is trading on past glories, if indeed there were any. You get the feeling it is being run on a shoestring budget in all departments. It is in such a great location but is suffering from neglect - a basic restoration would make it feel cared for and fresher. I am no interior designer but I could find easy ways to make this place smarter - although I'd start with a pest control programme and throwing away the carpets!
We booked for 2 nights and were disappointed with our stay, and we had really wanted to be happy here - oh well, such is life!
Most of the personnel are beautifully polite and friendly, a few others were more abrupt.
Those are all observations made during our stay.
On a more subjective level I felt there was an element of the emperor's new clothes about the whole place - it just needs one person to say "Actually this place is a shabby dump" and everyone would see it for what it is.
I felt the staff on the one hand wanted to ask why on earth we pay such a large amount of money to stay here when it is so shabby, and on the other hand are willing us to keep coming because for them, whilst it may not be great, it is at least a job!
Food was good though. Breakfasts were tasty. We ate in the restaurant on both evenings: first night because we wanted to and second night because it was raining and it was easier than going out. We also met a British couple who had lunch and dinner at the Glendower. They were staying at the nearby posh hotel but felt ours had the better food.
As I said we had wanted to enjoy this for what it thinks it is, and perhaps once was, but simply could not enjoy what it has become.
