This is a very personal review, as i am disabled and small things have a greater impact on my quality of life than they would have were I my former, healthy, fit and robust self. Sometimes the simplest thing can be a major obstacle.||I concede that someone else can have a wonderful time at The Gruener Wald and people obviously do.||Before booking we read the reviews, therefore we requested to be housed in the new wing as this was supposed to be nicer.||On arrival, very friendly receptionist, offered refreshments, nice touch I thought. ||Our room was in the original part of the house, large and spacious, somewhat rustic, but being in the country in keeping with local traditions. I didn't complain thinking it'll be ok.||No air-con though! ||There were not enough pillows on the bed so we requested additional ones. When the housekeeper arrived my heart sank, they were way past their best, in human terms positively geriatric, hardly any feathers left inside. ||No products in the bathroom but large plastic soap containers screwed to the wall. ||The wifi in the room was non-existent, something which is a game changer for us as I meticulously make sure that the wifi is good enough. we did complain a couple of times, but to no avail.||The bathroom has been refurbished within the last 5-7 years is relatively new but there is hardly anywhere to put your stuff.||On our third morning at 6am we were woken up by a loud scraping coming from upstairs. It sounded like someone was pushing furniture along hardwood floors which lasted for over an hour. This shouldn't have been possible as the ground was covered in shagpile carpet. We informed reception and were told they had a word with the people upstairs.||This was on the Friday morning. In the evening we were trying to sleep which was not possible as our room was directly over the bar part of the building. With the day having been near 30 c, the windows needed to stay open in order to be comfortable. Cars were parked in front and people were leaving, saying goodbye to their companions in loud voices. So reluctantly we shut ourselves in and spend a very uncomfortable and steamy night. On the positive side the next morning the scraping started an hour later and lasted hardly any time at all.||The next day as you would imagine I related this tale to the owner, who I have to say is Is around a lot of the time and easily approachable. They did find us another room in the new wing.||This was a bit of a revelation, rooms more up-to-date (see photo), the view magnificent.||The pillows beautifully and soft filled with feathers.||Our remaining stay in this new space stay was a paltry 2 days which I have to say I was very disappointed in as I felt cheated out of a relaxing time which we so badly needed.||The breakfasts is very good and lots of staff are there to assist. The only exception is the coffee, if you like it strong than you are out of luck. We even asked for a strong coffee. The cheeses some were the best we have tasted, as many teas as you can think of and eggs prepared any way you like it. ||Most of the guests at this establishment stay on a full or half board basis which is not our cup of tea as we like to try different foods. Those guests have booked the nicest tables for their whole stay which then made us feel as if we were an inconvenience when we tried to reserve a table for the evening at the hotel.||We ate at the restaurant some days. The portions are huge the, food well prepared with a modern twist even if slightly on the pricy side.||The majority of staff are very friendly maybe some could be a bit more forthcoming and go the extra mile.
