We stayed for a conference at the Hotel Hacienda El Portete and were accommodated in the sister property Hacienda de Garcia. The grounds/gardens were beautiful, hammocks, two friendly parrots, a turtle named Sofia and a little kitty named Susie. This colonial building is well maintained but has kept its wonderful historical ambiance. This location is within walking distance to Playa Grande (25 mins) and the stores of Puerto Colombia/Choroni. Richard, who was our host during our stay, did everything to make our accommodations and our conference a great success and we really appreciated it. In addition, the price paid for accommodations was very reasonable. ||There is a beautiful pool and a bar/restaurant located pool side. I also recommend Virgilio Espinal of Arekay Tours for a breathtaking jungle walk and birdwatching experience.

Just spent two nights in the Portete and was really let down by this hotel. You are not going to get 5-star luxury in Choroni but the Portete could be so much better with just a few minor changes.||||The room was very basic and at an acceptable level of cleanliness, but nothing special. There is a nice pool and nice views of the surrounding hills but I really didnt feel comfortable here. ||||Despite what some of the other reviews have said, in my opinion it is NOT in walking distance to the beach. Yes technically you can walk it but do you really want to walk 25-30mins to the beach under the blazing Venezuelan sun? I measured it with my GPS and its about 1 mile from Playa Grande.||||The things that I didnt like about this hotel was that when we arrived we were asked for 300 Bolivars in cash (in case we broke or stole something). As a customer I really dont like being told im not trusted. Then when we checked out they insisted on seeing the TV and Aircon remote controls from the room!!!||||Plus they insisted we wear non-removable Portete bracelets. They looked really tacky and if you want an even tan on your arm it would be impossible. We had to argue for about 5 minutes to get them to relent. ||||Then in the morning from about 8:30 they play loud music (some awful latin drivel). So if your room is close to the dining area (like ours was) then you have no option of a lie in.||||There was also a Jacuzzi which was cold! We were informed that it was always like this. To me a cold jacuzzi is not a jacuzzi, it is a small swimming pool.||||The room also didnt have a safe. I had to keep my cash on me which is something I dont like to do, especially in Venezuela.||||They did do one nice thing, which was to put an open jar of honey (or jam or something) to one side of the hotel so all the bees and bugs were attracted to it and didnt pester the guests too much. A nice touch.||||After two days we checked out and found another Posada in Choroni.||||I doubt I would stay at the Portete again. Instead I would stay at the lovely La Posada Las Garcia (see my other review).

I stayed at El Portete for a weekend. The place is well located, near the Choroni town, where you can find some restaurants and souvenir shops and it's also near the beach. ||We only stayed here to sleep but I can tell you the place have a couple of pools and a jacuzzi , a game room with a pool and ping pong table and a restaurant. ||The rooms are big and confortable , includes a small TV , air conditioner and also a big bathroom. ||I had a good time there. |||

We were recommeded this place by Venezuelan colleagues, and they were spot on.||Its a small hotel, 24 rooms and 3 suites, all done nicely plain and simple, nothing luxurious, but really well done nonetheless.||The hotel is based around the families 300 year old cocoa plantation, some of the buildings are original while some are purpose built.||We were lucky enough to stay in one of the original rooms around the edge of the central cocoa pod drying area.||Our room was basic, but nice, private bathroom, fan and air conditioning, big bed, very clean and well maintained. Each room has its own giant hammock hanging outside, perfect for a lazy afternoon.||There is a central pool (nice and deep and large) with a bar from which breakfast, lunch and dinner are served.||Food was great - again basic but really well done, lovely fresh calamari and great steak as a main course.||Food prices were reasonable as was the drink prices.||There is internet, a games room with pool and table tennis and plenty of places to lounge around.||The hotel is about 15 minutes walk from port, along a road without footpath all the way, but there are plenty of taxis around if you dont fancy the walk.||Our host, whos name i didnt catch was great, he helped us plan our time in Choroni/Puerto Colombia, giving us suggestions of beaches to visit, places to walk and where to eat.||A perfect host, a great location, great food, freiendly staff, and a great price!
