This review is specific to the mountain bike rentals and single track tours. I am an avid mountain biker and was excited to do some riding in costa rica.
The bikes on the website are well known high quality brands (Santa Cruz mostly), so I expected well taken care of bikes and knowledgeable bike staff.
Unfortunately, the bikes were really poorly maintained and bike staff were not very bike savvy. Once we got going both front and rear suspension were blown out. The seat post and collar slipped and needed regular adjustment on the 6 km climb, and on the descent the suspension was bottoming out because the seals were shot and they had not been properly maintained. It took away from the experience of what would have been some really cool trails.
Half way down the descent it dawned on me that no real safety check had been done on the brakes, or front and rear thru axles. Im a confident rider, but that's pretty sketchy and could lead to a nasty bail or injury.
I expressed my concerns to staff after the ride and gave them a list of things to consider repairing and/or upkeeping to ensure satisfaction and safety of future riders.
I wasn't pushing for a refund or discount, I mainly tried to explain from the perspective of a moutain biker that this kind of thing will continue to upset clients and that with a bit of regular maintenance people will leave smiling instead of kind of annoyed they spent a bunch of money on a good bike that's been left to rot.
The staff humored me with my little list of repairs but honestly no one really seems that interested in bikes. If youre a beginner, you might not notice, but insist on a safety check.
If youre getting a guide, ask them to indicate any hazards or changes in terrain. Our guide said nothing about this. Not a problem for me, as id rate the trails as green to blue, but would be an issue for a beginner rider.
Also, seriously consider whether you 'need' a guide. The trails were all marked and he didn't really do anything for us. Nice enough guy, but ....
In the end no discount or refund was offered from the front desk staff or management. So don't expect that sort of thing if you do go and it kinda sucks.
Remember, this is bike specific, I did not stay in the hotel or do any other activities, so I cannot comment on those.
Hope this helps folks wanting to rent bikes in CR.
Lots of the other stuff Hacienda does seems cool. Can't speak to it though
