"Helsinki’s Hotel Helka has been at it a long time — it was built by the YWCA nearly a century ago. And while it’s still owned by the YWCA, today it’s open to all, in a spirit of maximum inclusivity. It’s been reimagined as a tribute to Finnish modernist design, inspired by Alvar Aalto, whose designs furnish the guest rooms and public spaces. And it’s gone a little bit upscale in its comforts as well, without losing its approachable, accessible nature." - Tablet Hotels

The hotel may look a little rundown on the outside but it is much nicer on the inside. The staff were very nice and helped when we needed advice. We even had some great conversations with them. The room was exactly what we needed, two beds to sleep in and a bathroom. The only downside is the shower is on the same tile as the rest of the bathroom, so bathroom floor gets wet . The included buffet breakfast was amazing, lots of choices and delicious food. The hotel was about 10-15 minutes walk from a mall with some coffee shops, it was a bit farther for good restaurants. It was also near tram and bus lines.

Great experience - easy check-in / checkout - friendly staff - clean rooms, all though a little worn. We would book here again! Great breakfast buffet, but I missed the scramble eggs. There was other eggs though!

Very good hotel, I felt comfortable and welcomed. I was placed in a small but functional room, with all neccessary amenities. It was a little cold (for me), but the friendly staff immediately brought me an extra radiator. Excellent breakfast. Very cozy and nice designed living areas - lobby bar and restaurant. Kind and friendly staff, good location. My reccomendation.

I stayed at Hotel Helka for two nights on a work trip. I loved how cosy and warm the hotel felt—maybe thanks to all the lovely design furniture pieces—but more than that, it feels like a place that’s truly cared for. The breakfast buffet might have been one of my favourites ever. There’s also a Japanese restaurant inside the hotel (Murasaki), which was such a fun surprise and truly special. The reception staff were always attentive and gave me great tips on where to book a table for a later dinner on a Sunday. Thank you!

Most important advice for a stay in the Hotel Helka in Helsinki: Book a massage! It is the perfect opportunity to relax and feel grounded afterwards. Alar is the kindest person you can wish for for a massage and creates a safe space. The hotel itself is lovely. I had a beautiful and quiet room. I stayed around Midsummer and the curtains were able to block the light so I could sleep very well. All staff members I had the pleasure to talk to were very kind and charming. I felt welcome and like being home. The breakfast was a delight! So many options to choose from! I recommend the Finnish rye bread! And the cranberry juice! It is a wonderful mixture of things you know from other breakfast buffets and new and local options. When you need vegetarian, vegan or gluten-free options you'll find some. Maybe they could be more declarations if something is vegan or vegetarian (pancakes, porridge, bread...). I am sure the team will help out with this question - but reading is easier in the morning than talking for me. 😅 From the Hotel Helka you can walk to the Central Station, find a lot of restaurants and bars around it and even a shopping center. So everything is there for a wonderful stay in Helsinki. I liked the paintings on the wall of the hallway very, very much! Thank you very much for this wonderful experience! ❤️ I hope to come back one day.

Stayed here for a few nights on a work trip, my stay included their breakfast and my organization used their work/business room areas. I thought the hotel was cozy and welcoming, from the staff to the design. Breakfast included a wide selection of drinks (automated fine coffee machine, regular coffee, tea, etc), had a waffle making station, oatmeal and yogurt, lots of proteins and fruits and more. Bed was comfy and shower pressure was decent. There’s also a tiny room on the 5th floor that has an iron and a steamer if you need to de-wrinkle your clothes from travel! I didn’t visit their sauna but heard good things. I stayed in June so it was light out constantly if it wasn’t raining but the blackout curtains in the room were good enough for me.

Was pretty mid. Tv was great, room was alright, staff was great, but there were aspects that turned me down. Beats sleeping in the car, but i was not impressed.

Terrific Hotel. Staff at reception are so good and caring. The hotel is spotless. Room was lovely. We had our own sauna. Breakfast lovely. Would highly recommend and if I'm back in Helsinki will stay again. Close to transport and the museums

Yelp
The Hotel Helka is centrally located on a semi quiet street. The amenities are better than decent with super nice and attentive staff. Your rate will include a well stocked breakfast buffet, however the dining area can get pretty busy and finding a table at peak times may be an issue. And being that this is Finland, there is a sauna facility right on site. I did not partake, but my wife found it to be clean and well taken care of. The rooms are comfortable and offer everything you will need to enjoy your stay. Excellent value for the price.

Yelp
Helka is the best stay ever! Scandinavian hospitality, and everything is to adore... minus the weak wifi in my room. (It was strong in public places.) What's extra great is if you're a single traveler; you can get a snug little twin bed all for yourself at a smaller price than other rooms. I found Helka on Hotwire for a night, and including taxes, it was $80. If you go through Chase Portal and redeem Chase Points, it's even less. Rooms are clean Eco-focused hotel Comfy Water from tap is cleanest in the world! Computer that you can print docs from Best part? BREAKFAST. Sooo many options, and they have plenty of things for all kinds of dietary restrictions. Pancakes (more like cake :D) Finnish rice and cheese things Bacon Egg frittata squares Cold meats bar Vegetable and fruit bar Bread bar Oatmeal bar with the BEST overnight oats EVER Coffee, tea, and juice bar Scandinavia costs a lot, so no shame in filling up here and skipping lunch :P Great stay and would come back in a heartbeat. This hotel was one of my favorite things about Helsinki!

Yelp
We stayed at Helka hotel while we were exploring Helsinki. Helka is well known for their Finnish interior design but there are some other factors that made it so pleasant staying here. The room is pretty cozy. Not a huge space but sparking clean and has most of the things you need. The complimentary breakfast in the morning is exceptional. So many choices of food and very fresh delicious ingredients. They also have sauna in house and I loved it. We've been exploring the city in the daytime and after walking around quite a bit, all you can ask for is a relaxing sauna break. It's not big but having to be able to enjoy this as a complimentary was very nice. So overall, it has great service, nice staff, amazing amenities and hip atmosphere for a reasonable cost. I would definitely would like to stay at Helka again when I come back to visit Helsinki.

Yelp
We had a very nice room at this hotel. Everything looked clean and relatively new. The room was spacious and the bed was very comfortable. Also a side table and chair. They had the best towels of anywhere we've ever been. Thick and luxurious. The bathroom shower was large. The sink was a little bit small however. The breakfast buffet paled in comparison to the fabulous buffets we've had elsewhere in Scandinavia. It didn't have fresh eggs that were any good, the pancakes were rubbery, the bacon was very greasy, and no fish such as salmon was offered. The salad bar was very good. All of the front desk people were excellent except for one officious woman. The hotel was in a pretty good location, however all the tourist sites seem to be 15 to 25 minutes away by foot.

Yelp
Trendy cool hotel in downtown Helsinki. However, rooms are extremely small and cheaply decorated. Breakfast buffet was limited but adequate. Location is really great for walking through the city or access to public transport. Parking in the nearby parking garage worked well, even with a large vehicle (for European standards).

Yelp
Outstanding boutique and art hotel with very caring staff; the bed was extremely comfortable and the interior was welcoming and fun. We had our own sauna in the room and it was worth the extra €€€. The complimentary buffet style breakfast was truly phenomenal - try those little berry purée samples in that mini fridge!

Yelp
This is a very nice hotel typical of non-chain European hotels. I stayed in a Comfort room, and I would absolutely recommend doing so for the slightly better space and facilities (according to the Web site). The hotel is extremely clean. The breakfast spread is diverse and maintained well. (The breakfast area is also very elegant, with a few fake tree trunks on one side adding very much to the look.) The sauna is nice (but sadly, did not include birch branches!). The room provided quality Thann toiletries, including body lotion. This was also true of the sauna shower. The room included a robe and slippers for the sauna. The main train station is only a 10-15 minute walk away. All of the main parts of central Helsinki are easy to get to (even by foot). There's plentiful public transit nearby: It's only two minutes from the closest entrance to the Kamppi metro/bus station and mall, including the very good K-Supermarket. The hotel staff are helpful, friendly, and very responsive by email. A few small issues I reported were handled very quickly (though one never received a reply). The Wifi is fast and has no login at all, which is very nice. My only slight annoyance was that the hotel made a really big deal out of their "Finnish design", and yes, they do have a few Finnish furniture items. But these weren't particularly fancy ones. I suspect to most travelers, it would have been indistinguishable from a room furnished entirely at IKEA. Overall, it was a great place to spend a few days, and I would return without hesitation.

Yelp
Very minimalist, clean, functional and no frills rooms. The standard single rooms were fine for a short 1-night stay (for 2 people). If staying 2+ nights, I'd definitely book the "premium" rooms for the much-needed extra space. Also could have used a reading lamp for the night stands (when one of us wanted to read, and the other wanted to sleep). We had to get up to switch off the ceiling light and floor lamp. Impressive breakfast buffet spread -- with muesli, yogurt, fruit, breads, cheese, tomatoes, plus the obligatory American-style offerings, like eggs and sausages. Great location, very central, and just a 5-minute walk to the Kamppi bus station.

Yelp
Good price but not impressed. Friendly staff, but it couldnt overcome what I thought of the rooms. Everything seemed dated and dingy. The bed was small, decor was spartan at best, and the best I can say is that everything was utilitarian. We had breakfast there and that was a bright spot. The shower was tiny and it looked like something from the 1950's. We used some of the conference room areas and they were adequate for what we were doing. Not sure if there is better in the area for the price.

Yelp
Very helpful and friendly staff. Room was very clean but small which was not a big deal. Fantastic price point and location is not far from the train station. Hotel bar is well appointed abd the bar staff too notch. No gym but a lovely sauna that is free to use. Includes breakfast which is a nice added feature. I'll be back!

Yelp
Easy late check-in. Simple with small rooms yet cool, clean, and modern. Friendly concierge. Large buffet breakfast that's included. The sausages and cheese were awesome.
