"The perfect mix of a restaurant and a drinking spot, Hotel Herman on Boulevard Saint-Laurent in Mile End is ideal for either a three-course feast or a quick glass with a side of nibbles. The kitchen specializes in sophisticated, fresh dishes like Venison tartare served with cabbage and clams, or smoked eel with onion and chicharone. The perfect accompaniment is a bottle (or three) or their new imports, or some of their classic cocktails, sipped around their square bar. The staff is generous with advice and attention, and will let you taste wines before ordering them (still a rare habit in this town)."

Very enjoyable evening... Interesting menu, mixing small plates and large plates and clever takes on some fairly usual ingredients which were a real success. Definitely worth listening to the explanation of how the menu works. Nice ambience and also nicely designed dining room. One point (though not major), certain of the lights were dimmed on and off continuously (which i think was the call for service from the kitchen, either that or there's some electrical fault). This was in my line of sight and initially a bit distracting. Not major, but seemed a bit strange at the time.

I’ve been hearing about Hotel Herman for a long time so when my boyfriend and I decided to go, I had great expectations and was looking forward to it. Unfortunately it was a big disappointment! We started with cucumber and oyster emulsion. Basically cucumbers with mayonnaise, for $12. The other starter was shrimps with fish crackers -- extremely tiny portions, mostly fish crackers and too much sugary sauce. For the first main, we chose sweetbreads. There was one piece. It was pretty dry and bland. The second main was Lamb. It was good but it didn't save the meal. We gave up and left with empty stomachs after 140 dollars (4 glasses of wine). I love food and know the restaurant world quite well. I can understand that some evenings can be off and disrupt the normal quality, but we came on a weekend night and the restaurant was half full. No excuse to be neglecting quality. If this is the norm, I think this restaurant is overrated, I don't understand the hype.

Sorry guys but this place is over-rated! The food is overthought and lacks the focus of great cuisine. Sure it looks good coming out of the kitchen but the portions are tiny, it's overpriced and the service is whatever. If you know anything about food you'll know this place is a miss. If you're a band wagon foodie you wouldn't know the difference -- which explains all the hype. To be fair, the interior layout is welcoming. Walking past this place is the only dish I recommend.

Beautiful interior design, good service . Overpriced for the amount of food. We order an asparagus dish, big plate with 3 asparagus for 9$. This is like a tapas place but more expensive. Don't go to this place if you are hungry and tight in budget.

Hotel Herman has a very interesting menu with out of the box dishes that you rarely see in Montreal. I enjoyed the razor clams and the horse which were perfectly executed. Only downfall was a poorly made foie gras terrine, that the waiter said was "flashcooked" which seemed very wrong. And sadly it tasted just wrong too. But all the rest was great and the wine is also very nice, including bio and organic wines.

Cocktails were top notch. Small menu, but everything is extremely delicious. We sat at the bar and received great service. Highly recommended dinner spot.

The food was good but plates were way too small even for the fine dining type. The wine selection was nice but the fact that the bottle was not opened by the table wasn't OK for me.

One of the best restaurants I've ever been to. Their thing was that each dish was done three different ways. Really cool interior as well. Would return again
