Hotel Hippocampus, Kotor, Montenegro - Explore & Book

"Kotor’s UNESCO-listed Old Town resembles a stolen corner of Venice, hidden in Montenegro's most sheltered bay. Inside the near Millennia-old fortified walls, narrow walkways meander between pretty piazzas, historic churches and thriving cafés. So far, so Venice - and the similarities are understandable. The floating city ruled over Kotor Bay for centuries; glance skywards and you’ll still see the Lion of St Mark presiding over many doorways. But while Venice has become one of the world’s favourite tourist destinations, Kotor offers a much more manageable and authentic experience, particularly outside the summer season. A visit to this understated gem requires an abode to match, and Hotel Hippocampus is just that. On the narrowest street in town, 9 Balkan-chic rooms and a sophisticated restaurant are concealed behind its unassuming 17th-century facade. Inside, sumptuous plum sofas, gilded doors and original abstract artworks are balanced by rustic bare walls and polished stone floors. Days are a blissful mix of lazy courtyard breakfasts, sunny strolls by the water and dusky evenings sipping sundowners on the romantic terrace. We can’t wait to return. Highs Opened in 2012, it's Kotor’s standard bearer for artful Balkan renovation and even won the Montenegrin Wild Beauty Award for best new coastal hotelThe elegant roof terrace and restaurant courtyard provide plenty of space to soak up the glorious Montenegrin sunshineA great Italian-influenced menu in the restaurant; the hotel also owns a less formal pizzeria just around the cornerThere’s more to Kotor than the Old Town: climb the 1,350 steps of St John’s Fort, book a boat trip around the bay, or lounge on one of the nearby beachesA stay in Montenegro is easily combined with a few nights in Dubrovnik (Croatia), which is just up the coast and served by plenty of international flights Lows The town-centre location means rooms lack dramatic views and tend to look over the narrow, time-worn streetsThere are a small number of bars playing music opposite the hotel in high season, and some guest feedback suggests sound can carry acrossWe encountered minor translation issues with some reception staff, but most guests are greeted by reservations manager Zana, who is an excellent hostRestaurant service, while always friendly and efficient, may lack precisionA strict cancellation policy" - Melissa Burfitt

We stayed at the Hotel Hippocampus for two evenings while on a trip through the Western Balkans. The hotel is located within the town's fortress walls, and therefore, we had to pull our suitcases across a cobblestone path for several minutes to reach it. This was actually kind of fun.||Hotel Hippocampus is classified as a “Boutique Hotel” which in this case I guess means small. Anyway, the reception area is “very” small. The staff was friendly enough, but check in took a while since there were 7 people in our group. Our room, 102, was on the first floor, which was convenient since the hotel's elevator was barely large enough for one person and one suitcase. It was simply quicker and easier to carry our suitcases up the steps. The room itself was average size, and interestingly furnished. The bathroom was on the small side, but had lots of amenities.||The hotel does need some modernizing. We had to have our door lock fixed since the key to our room did not work. I got the impressions this was not new from the man who fixed the lock. Also, the safe in our room could not be opened which I assume was because the previous guest locked it prior to leaving. The staff did not know how to fix it. The refrigerator did not cool and the sink in our bathroom did not drain. The towels in the room were also very thin.||The included breakfast was off a menu not buffet style like all the others on our trip. This was not really a problem, except there were only two options. One option that included eggs was on the small side. The other option was a bowl of oatmeal, and that was it, just a bowl of oatmeal.||However, our biggest issue with the Hotel Hippocampus was not the hotel itself. There is a nightclub just outside the hotel that blasted music until past 11:00PM. I assume there is nothing the hotel can do about this, but as a guest it is a REAL issue. So if you stay here, make sure you have ear plugs – good ones.||Not all was bad, since the location is good, there are lots of close by restaurants, and the staff is friendly. However, just getting a good night's sleep because of the noise was a major issue.

I have seen some not so good reviews about this hotel, however… we have throughly enjoyed our stay of three nights here, beds are comfortable, there is some noise from the bars below in the street, but, nothing to keep us awake, all quiet by midnight. ( we were here Monday through to and including Wednesday). Staff are incredibly friendly, welcoming and very helpful during our stay. Definitely would book to stay here again!

Our 3 night stay at this hotel in Kotor was an absolute disaster and a complete waste of money. The entire experience was a testament to false advertising and a shocking lack of care, crazy for a 4 star... The issues began from the moment we arrived. Despite being advertised as having a parking lot, there was none. We were told to park in a paid lot outside the old town, forcing us to wait in line for hours just to find a spot. This was a frustrating and terrible start to our trip. The room itself was an unbelievable disappointment. It bore no resemblance to the photos online; it was incredibly small and cramped, with barely enough room to walk. The noise was relentless, and we could hear everything from the hallway and other rooms and the clubs downstairs, making it impossible to relax. Staff were unhelpful and inconsistent, The total lack of amenities was a huge issue. We had no shampoo or shower gel, the breakfast kept lacking what advertised. This hotel had no redeeming qualities and was a complete rip-off. Having stayed in countless hotels, I can confidently say this was the worst experience I have ever had. I urge anyone considering this hotel to look elsewhere; it's truly not a hotel worth choosing.

A wonderful hotel restaurant in Kotor with a stunning terrace view. The food was excellent. The meat was well-cooked, and we loved the presentation of the octopus. We had the chance to chat with Chef Necip and thanked him for the delicious dishes. We definitely recommend it!

This was, without question, the worst hotel experience I’ve ever had. I genuinely cannot understand how it holds a 4-star rating. Yes, we were warned about the noise — but that ended up being the least of our problems. The service was appalling. One staff member in particular was not only unhelpful but repeatedly gave us incorrect information, contradicting both the tourist information centre and his own colleagues. The overall attitude from staff was cold, dismissive, and unwelcoming. The room itself was clean, but that’s where the positives end. The only real benefit of this hotel is its location in the Old Town — but there are countless other hotels nearby that won’t ruin your stay. Avoid this place. You’ll thank yourself later.

My friends and I went here for dinner and were blown away by the view at sunset from the rooftop patio. The most amazing musician was playing and it was incredible to see the view of the mountains with the sun going down. The food was excellent (get the burrata!) and the service was great!

Nothing boutique at this hotel. The design is unfinished. The bathroom had a strange design. The mattresses are very simple. The hotel is next to a night club with high music until 1. The service was friendly though.

We loved our stay at the Hippocampus. All of the staff we met were really friendly and welcoming. The room was large and comfortable and breakfast was good (although a little more variety would have been welcome). The hotel is in the heart of the old town making it perfect for exploring beautiful Kotor - but it does mean it is noisy at night being next to a bar - the only downside in an otherwise amazing stay.
