Yelp
Hotel Hirsch is expanding. Again. They are adding another wing with 29 rooms. The hotel is a family run business handed down through the generations. The hallways and most of the "themed" rooms are adorned with Bavarian antique furniture and sporadically built-in book cases containing hundreds of books for that late night read. It is located on one of the busiest streets in Fussen so don't jay walk, you could get run over! Upon check in we were upgraded into a very large room with spectacular Alp views, large king sized bed, gorgeous bathroom, lots of closet space and a separate water closet (toilet). It had a private balcony, large flatscreen TV and a two chair table. The room decor was amazing... The use of drift wood as curtain rod finials, the occasional stone block protruding through the walls and the ornate wooden ceiling. The entire hotel exudes Bavarian. Oh and there is an outside sitting area on the 3rd floor with breath taking views of the Hohes Schloss Fussen castle.
Breakfast was included in our itinerary. Located just off the main lobby it is served buffet style and has everything! It opens at 7am daily (we were able to eat a couple of times at 6:50am...). The dining area itself is massive and covers about three dining rooms. It is quite the spread of hot and cold foods! Breads, jams and spreads, eggs, meats, fruits, vegetables, pastries, coffee, juices, cereals, cheeses, etc., etc. It is well worth any additional cost just for the convenience of an early start since almost all tourists are in a hurry to get in line for castle tickets. They even have a beer garden and a full blown Austrian cuisine restaurant. The outside tables are located under beautiful trees and grape vines, blocked from the busy street by hedges. It seems to be a gathering point for the locals. Lastly there is a full blown modern grocery store right next door called REWE so you can stock up on bottled water, snacks, or create your own picnic basket for one of the many nearby parks. REWE also offers a full array of beer, wine and liquor. The Hotel Hirsch staff is very friendly and we got to meet one of the family-owners. They have free wifi too. I highly recommend Hotel Hirsch as your Fussen base camp for castle hopping! I would do it again!
