The Best Hotels in Iceland, From Rural Lodges to Reykjavik Boutiques

"From Stykkishólmur, travelers can also jump onto the Westfjords ferry, plodding its way through the thousands of rocks, skerries, and islands in the fjord Breiðafjörður before calling into port on the southern edge of Iceland’s least-visited region. But along the way, the ferry makes a mysterious stop at Flatey, the only populated island in the fjord, a wistful place dotted with a handful of colorful houses. Time moves differently here; stay at the island hotel even for just an evening and you’ll feel yourself slipping into the off-kilter rhythm of an Icelandic summer. Hazy golden light falls across the rocky shores and surrounding seascapes, birds cry out as they wheel in the air, and long grass shimmers and waves in the wind as you stumble around in a daze, wondering as travelers so often do in Iceland: is this place real? The humble Hotel Flatey opens only in the summer (in winter the population of the island is around five people), offering comfortable rooms across several 19th-century homes. The interiors are poetically Scandinavian, with a clean and uncluttered design pulled straight from the pages of a magazine. The hotel restaurant serves as the island’s pub and lounge, where locals and summer blow-ins gather in the evening to swap stories and enjoy a warm meal. The entire experience feels like being welcomed into the home of a distant Icelandic relative. It’s a hotel that hits all the boxes for an extended stay in Reykjavik: a blend of urban and Nordic style, helpful staff, and a fantastic central location. The typical Icelandic building is over 100 years old, a grand old place in keeping with its note-worthy neighbors such as the Icelandic Parliament, City Hall, and the old cathedral. Inside, Kvosin is another story altogether, taking inspiration from a more modern-day Reykjavik. The renovated interiors are updated and modish, providing a comfortable home base from which to explore the capital. Ducking outside the hotel, within minutes you can be sipping on a local craft beer, catching a live gig, or enjoying a leisurely stroll around the city’s central pond, Tjörnin. Stumbling home after experiencing Reykjavik’s feisty nightlife, you’ll find the rooms welcoming and fashionable, with swanky leather chairs, sleek kitchenettes, and handsome desks for journaling. Pleasant hotel located on quiet street but close to attractions, shopping, and museums as well as excellent restaurants. Rooms decent size with comfortable beds and good showers. Elevator access to upper floors. WiFi functioned well. Buffet breakfast was plentiful with eggs, fruit, meat, cheese, and breads. Parking area was small but street parking in front of hotel was quiet. Staff were helpful and friendly.

Hotel Holt is an old school hotel with a unique Charm. Gabriella at the front desk was so friendly and helpful. Gabriella arranged a great dinner for us. The bartender, Josipa, provided humor and great drinks. The rooms are Comfortable, great air flow. Beds are comfortable. And the location, 6 min walk to everything. Perfect location.

Hotel Holt was the perfect stay for our night in Reykjavik. Within walking distance to rainbow Street and BSÍ Bus Terminal. The building was so historic and classy. Loved the detail. Loved the music in the lobby. The old school elevator was so unique. Gabriella was THE BEST! She helped us get a taxi when we were running behind to get the bus from BSÍ Bus Terminal to KEF. She gave us an amazing recommendation for Sandholt bakery (amazing cinnamon buns, breakfast, and pastries). She also helped us book Blue Lagoon with a transfer when we realized Secret Lagoon and Hvammsvik were not available with transfer. She managed and extended our expectations!

I had a lovely stay here. I felt very welcomed. The staff were helpful and kind, willing to answer my questions. I was able to walk everywhere I needed to from my hotel. Quick access to the church, rainbow street, shopping and restaurants. My room was spacious and comfortable. I really enjoyed the breakfast every morning, I highly recommend adding this to your stay package.

The Holt Hotel does not look like much from the outside, but the common areas are cozy and adorned with beautiful paintings. The staff is friendly and helpful. The hotel is conveniently located on a quiet residential street that is with walking distance to the downtown attractions and the bus depot. The rooms while somewhat dated are exceptionally clean and comfortable and also include original art. The extras such as candies were a nice touch. We would definitely stay here again but would probably skip the breakfast buffet.

Well located, just a short walk to town, with some limited parking available and included. The rooms are dated but comfortable. For the very high price charged i would have expected alot more from the rooms. The curtains don't cover the window completely, and the "balcony" is more like a fire escape with no privacy outside your room. However the communal areas (the lobby, breakfast room and beautiful library) are very nicely done. Breakfast was excellent. Service was also very good with very friendly staff, and they accomodated our needs which was much appreciated. Overall, having stayed in hotels all over Iceland, this is a nice place but very overpriced.

This is a gem. The artwork is everywhere and fantastic. The hotel itself is very comfortable, with lots of common space to lounge. The breakfast is excellent. It's very quiet, on a neighborhood street, yet less than 10 minutes to walk to many restaurants and the main sights of the city.

Lovely hotel in great location. Many sights are within walking distance. Greeted by very pleasant receptionist (Gabariela) who was keen to ensure that my wife and I had a very pleasant stay. She was most helpful and directed us on our city walking tour plans. Frankly this young lady would be our reason for returning to The Holt. Thank you.
