The Best Hotels in Iceland, From Rural Lodges to Reykjavik Boutiques

"From Stykkishólmur, travelers can also jump onto the Westfjords ferry, plodding its way through the thousands of rocks, skerries, and islands in the fjord Breiðafjörður before calling into port on the southern edge of Iceland’s least-visited region. But along the way, the ferry makes a mysterious stop at Flatey, the only populated island in the fjord, a wistful place dotted with a handful of colorful houses. Time moves differently here; stay at the island hotel even for just an evening and you’ll feel yourself slipping into the off-kilter rhythm of an Icelandic summer. Hazy golden light falls across the rocky shores and surrounding seascapes, birds cry out as they wheel in the air, and long grass shimmers and waves in the wind as you stumble around in a daze, wondering as travelers so often do in Iceland: is this place real? The humble Hotel Flatey opens only in the summer (in winter the population of the island is around five people), offering comfortable rooms across several 19th-century homes. The interiors are poetically Scandinavian, with a clean and uncluttered design pulled straight from the pages of a magazine. The hotel restaurant serves as the island’s pub and lounge, where locals and summer blow-ins gather in the evening to swap stories and enjoy a warm meal. The entire experience feels like being welcomed into the home of a distant Icelandic relative. It’s a hotel that hits all the boxes for an extended stay in Reykjavik: a blend of urban and Nordic style, helpful staff, and a fantastic central location. The typical Icelandic building is over 100 years old, a grand old place in keeping with its note-worthy neighbors such as the Icelandic Parliament, City Hall, and the old cathedral. Inside, Kvosin is another story altogether, taking inspiration from a more modern-day Reykjavik. The renovated interiors are updated and modish, providing a comfortable home base from which to explore the capital. Ducking outside the hotel, within minutes you can be sipping on a local craft beer, catching a live gig, or enjoying a leisurely stroll around the city’s central pond, Tjörnin. Stumbling home after experiencing Reykjavik’s feisty nightlife, you’ll find the rooms welcoming and fashionable, with swanky leather chairs, sleek kitchenettes, and handsome desks for journaling. This was a perfect spot for the day we arrived. It was reasonably comfortable. The service was impeccable. Gabriella was excellent and made me wish we had another night to spend there. We booked a junior suite, which was fine. Spacious by the standards in Iceland. But the bathroom was a little small and awkward. The breakfast was excellent.

This is a great place to stay in Reykjavik. It is an easy walk to the center of town and there is free parking. The library and bar are spectacular. My wife and I shared many conversations during Happy Hours with visitors as well as locals. So cozy, and amazing drinks by the bartender, Josephine. She had a variation on the French 75 that was excellent and my wife loved her Old Fashioned.

We had the warmest of welcomes from Gabriella. She efficiently sorted our error with the booking, booked us an amazing restaurant, and gave us a good induction of the local area. She was the smile, and welcome we needed after a very long day. The hotel is warm, very clean, comfortable and stylish. The art in the hotel gives it an orginal vibe. It is in an excellent location. We will be coming back.

Hotel is in a quiet residential area but with walking distance to shopping and restaurant areas. The room was clean, comfortable and facilities were functioning well. Gabriela in the reception desk was particularly helpful, effective and professional. She recommended places of interest to us , helped us to book tickets and taxi as needed. We had a comfortable stay.

Pleasant hotel located on quiet street but close to attractions, shopping, and museums as well as excellent restaurants. Rooms decent size with comfortable beds and good showers. Elevator access to upper floors. WiFi functioned well. Buffet breakfast was plentiful with eggs, fruit, meat, cheese, and breads. Parking area was small but street parking in front of hotel was quiet. Staff were helpful and friendly.

Great place to stay if you enjoy quirky and unique places to stay- especially if you enjoy art! The decor was inviting and intriguing. They’ve made a modest building feel luxurious. The bar and library are cozy places to hang out with dark furnishings, leather chairs to lounge in, and books to peruse. The bartender was fun to chat with and made some good cocktails. Room was not huge but very thoughtful. You can tell this is perhaps and older hotel that is being repurposed into a new one.

The website pictures do not do this beautiful hotel enough justice. Gabriella made sure we did not have to lift a finger and made us feel incredibly welcomed as our first stop in Reykjavik. We loved her dedication, hospitality, and she had incredible recommendations for restaurants and bars around the area. The beds were made in the traditional Scandinavian style and incredibly cozy. We had such an amazing time we've added another stay in our schedule before we leave.

Hotel Holt was the perfect stay for our night in Reykjavik. Within walking distance to rainbow Street and BSÍ Bus Terminal. The building was so historic and classy. Loved the detail. Loved the music in the lobby. The old school elevator was so unique. Gabriella was THE BEST! She helped us get a taxi when we were running behind to get the bus from BSÍ Bus Terminal to KEF. She gave us an amazing recommendation for Sandholt bakery (amazing cinnamon buns, breakfast, and pastries). She also helped us book Blue Lagoon with a transfer when we realized Secret Lagoon and Hvammsvik were not available with transfer. She managed and extended our expectations!
