The Best Hotels in Iceland, From Rural Lodges to Reykjavik Boutiques

"From Stykkishólmur, travelers can also jump onto the Westfjords ferry, plodding its way through the thousands of rocks, skerries, and islands in the fjord Breiðafjörður before calling into port on the southern edge of Iceland’s least-visited region. But along the way, the ferry makes a mysterious stop at Flatey, the only populated island in the fjord, a wistful place dotted with a handful of colorful houses. Time moves differently here; stay at the island hotel even for just an evening and you’ll feel yourself slipping into the off-kilter rhythm of an Icelandic summer. Hazy golden light falls across the rocky shores and surrounding seascapes, birds cry out as they wheel in the air, and long grass shimmers and waves in the wind as you stumble around in a daze, wondering as travelers so often do in Iceland: is this place real? The humble Hotel Flatey opens only in the summer (in winter the population of the island is around five people), offering comfortable rooms across several 19th-century homes. The interiors are poetically Scandinavian, with a clean and uncluttered design pulled straight from the pages of a magazine. The hotel restaurant serves as the island’s pub and lounge, where locals and summer blow-ins gather in the evening to swap stories and enjoy a warm meal. The entire experience feels like being welcomed into the home of a distant Icelandic relative. It’s a hotel that hits all the boxes for an extended stay in Reykjavik: a blend of urban and Nordic style, helpful staff, and a fantastic central location. The typical Icelandic building is over 100 years old, a grand old place in keeping with its note-worthy neighbors such as the Icelandic Parliament, City Hall, and the old cathedral. Inside, Kvosin is another story altogether, taking inspiration from a more modern-day Reykjavik. The renovated interiors are updated and modish, providing a comfortable home base from which to explore the capital. Ducking outside the hotel, within minutes you can be sipping on a local craft beer, catching a live gig, or enjoying a leisurely stroll around the city’s central pond, Tjörnin. Stumbling home after experiencing Reykjavik’s feisty nightlife, you’ll find the rooms welcoming and fashionable, with swanky leather chairs, sleek kitchenettes, and handsome desks for journaling. Hotel Holt

Hotel Holt is an elegant, well-located property in a central yet quiet area of Reykjavik, making it convenient to explore most of the main attractions on foot. The atmosphere is definitely one of its strengths: the hotel features many works of art, which make it distinctive and pleasant, especially in the common areas. The rooms are clean and tidy, although the décor feels somewhat dated and could use renovation to meet the expectations of a 4-star hotel. Comfort is decent, but nothing exceptional. The staff are polite and helpful, while the breakfast is good but offers a rather limited selection compared to other hotels in the same category. Overall, it is a good hotel for its location and atmosphere, but the value for money could be improved.

I had a wonderful time here with my mother. The hotel is well located and it has a cosy vibe. We are particularly happy with the staff and especially with Gabriela, who made us feel comfortable and gave us a lot of advice and recommendations. We had the opportunity to experience amazing tours thanks to her. |The rooms are very clean and the hostel is beautiful (with many artwork). The food is also good.||Thank you

A gem of a hotel. It's cute and quirky and in the perfect location. Reception is friendly, room was clean, shower hot. Great breakfast buffet. Our room had the perfect view of the church! Would definitely go back!

Gabriella is genuinely so helpful, kind, and welcoming!! My Jr Suite with the balcony has been a site to see. The view has been phenomenal. The hotel is central to everything you need and want to explore. Walking distance. What an experience 😍😍.

Extremely quiet when I stayed, only saw one other couple the whole time I was there. The bar was closed during my visit. Room was very clean but no heating switched on when I arrived. Lovely bathroom toiletries, hand soap, shower gel, shampoo and conditioner. Very nice staff. Easy to get to from bus stop one and a stroll into the high street. There is a kronan supermarket further up across the road towards the high street.

The service was good and the downstairs decor is very beautiful. The room was about $389 USD per night but very small. The bathroom was also very small. It had a hair dryer but there was little else, no safe, no mini fridge, etc. When I say the room was very small I mean it was barely bigger than the bed with just enough room to walk around the bed. The elevator was also small and could barely fit two people and two suitcases. We had to make multiple trips. The location of this hotel is its biggest asset being only an 8 minute walk from the heart of downtown Reykjavik. There is free wifi in the room and it was pretty fast. The TV is useless with only a few Icelandic channels and doesn't support accounts. We had booked one day for the first day of our vacation and one day for the last night. For the price I expected a bigger room. We didn't have any problem but I'm not sure if I'd stay here again.

We had a wonderful stay at this hotel! Gabriela at the reception and Jan at breakfast really made us feel at home with their warm and friendly energy. The whole hotel team was very welcoming and kind.||It's the little details that made us feel special—like the candles everywhere, the lovely Christmas decorations that weren't too much, and the charming little gingerbread house. The rooms were super clean, and the breakfast was delicious.||You can also relax at the hotel's bar with a nice drink. The hotel is in a great location, very central, so it’s just a short walk to the main shopping and souvenir area, as well as Rainbow Street. It’s only about a 7-minute walk to the BSI Bus Terminal and 5 minutes to Bus Stop 2.||The hotel also offers a Jazz Night, which we missed because we were on an excursion, but it sounded like a lot of fun! Just keep in mind, if you’re going on an excursion, you won’t be able to get a hotel pick-up, as there’s a local law about hotels in downtown being too close to bus stops or terminals.||Overall, it’s a fantastic place to stay, full of charm and history, with amazing people and a great atmosphere. We will definitely come back!

We spent one night at Hotel Holt and loved how central the location is to exploring the city. The hotel has an older, art deco vintage vibe and rooms are small but comfortable. They have a tiny parking lot and we were able to get a spot and then didn't move until we checked out the next day. The staff is so helpful, friendly, and accommodating. The bar was closed when we visited and we didn't try breakfast. It was perfect for a one night stop.
