An absolutely wonderful place to stay. Located in a beautiful, quiet, and picturesque part of Amsterdam, this hotel is only a short stroll from the central city, and across the road from the botanical gardens. Staff are incredibly friendly, and very helpful. They made our stay a beautiful experience. Family owned and run. I have every intention of staying here again.

Hotel Hortus was an absolute gem of a find in Amsterdam. From the moment I arrived, I felt warmly welcomed and at ease. The owner is a truly wonderful lady—friendly, kind, and always ready to help with a smile. She made the whole stay feel more personal and homely. The location is perfect, just a short walk from major attractions but in a quiet, peaceful neighborhood. My room was clean, comfortable, and had everything I needed for a pleasant stay. The shared spaces were tidy and well-maintained throughout. I loved the relaxed, no-fuss atmosphere of the place. It’s ideal for travelers who value character and hospitality over flashy luxury. The Wi-Fi was strong and reliable, and the beds were surprisingly comfy. Towels and toiletries were provided, which was a nice touch. The coffee and tea corner downstairs was super convenient. The price is more than fair considering the prime location and cozy vibe. I especially appreciated the little touches that showed care in hosting. I would absolutely stay here again and recommend it to anyone visiting Amsterdam. A big thank you to the lovely owner for making my stay so enjoyable!

One of the Worst Hotel Experiences I’ve Ever Had This place should not be called a hotel. The building has three floors connected by extremely steep and unsafe stairs. Going up or down feels dangerous, especially if you’re carrying luggage or have mobility issues. There is no elevator. The rooms are very old and outdated. Only the first floor seems to have been renovated, while the upper two floors are in poor condition. Basic amenities like a hairdryer are missing. Each floor has at least 10 rooms, and every time someone opens or closes a door, it makes a loud, unpleasant noise—just like old, creaky doors. The entire place is noisy and chaotic. The staff was rude and unprofessional, and the service was far from what you’d expect from any decent hotel. The prices are ridiculously high compared to the quality of the rooms and facilities. I honestly don’t understand how this place qualifies as a hotel. I will definitely be reporting this experience to the appropriate authorities. I strongly advise against staying here.

Good value hotel in a nice quiet part of town, super super comfy bed and reasonably sized room. The toilet was a little cramped but the shower however was really quite awful. Would get super super hot and wouldn’t cool down and would spurt everywhere so you’d get super hot water on you, and would randomly turn all hot. Location wise it is about a 20 minute walk into the main area or a 15 min tram which we didn’t mind for the savings but a thing to definitely bear in mind. Very kind staff, let us keep our bags there all day after checkout

The hotel is centrally located in Amsterdam, just a 20-minute walk from the city center. In terms of transportation, it’s very convenient—trams pass just a 2-minute walk from the hotel. The hotel staff were extremely helpful and friendly. They assisted us a lot with information about the city, such as where to shop and how to get around easily. We only had one issue: the stairs were quite steep and narrow, so getting to the third floor was a bit challenging. Also, the walls of the rooms were thin, so we could easily hear noises from the corridor. However, the room itself was clean and spacious, which made for a comfortable stay.

Great value for the money! The hotel was super clean, the location is great, 30min walk from central station, right across the street there’s a tramway and 10 min walk a subway. The lady was very helpful, kind and funny ! Thanks for everything ! Defs recommend !

Unfortunately it was not a pleasant stay but truth to be told it could have been expected. Cannot say that the hotel withhold information about the room or the stairs. 20mins walk from main Train station. Need to highlight that the hotel staff was really kind and helpful! That was the best part:) We paid 100 eur for 2 nights in January. 1. Stairs are extremely steep so if you have big luggage then maybe choose another place to stay. 2. Walls are like paper. I’m a great sleeper but even I had problems with the door slamming and even talking from corridors and neighbour rooms. 3. Doors are bad. Almost every time they slam even if you are careful. Mix it with thin walls. Not good. All in all it served its purpose but next time we would pay more for a better hotel.

Yelp
I hope someone from the hotel reads this I was stationed in Frankfurt in 1960 to 1962 stayed at this hotel (f7.5o) a night. I found a business card yesterday with some old photos I'm surprised the hotel is still in business

Yelp
Thanks to Steve X.'s review, I found this great budget hotel (40€ per night) close to work and other attractions. I was able to stay here for four nights, and I really enjoyed staying here. It almost feels like home. They have a huge common room, which is cozy and inviting. You could just spend plenty of time in the common room, and never see Amsterdam. Just kidding. Dennis is the owner and he has a great staff that help their guests. I got off from Tram 9 at the Waterlooplein stop and was lost. Also, I wasn't dressed warmly enough, so I thought I was going to die. One of Dennis' staff, Brent, was so nice to just pick me up where I was. Now, that is customer service. The rooms are basic, with twin bed, a TV and a sink in the room. There is also a safe in every room. You will have shared bathrooms and showers, but that is pretty standard across Europe. Breakfast is included, but nothing much for the vegetarian. They will however cook you eggs any way you want. Some other wonderful amenities, if you plan to stay here: Free coffee until 11pm every night (in the winter, this is a blessing) Kitchen to cook your food Fridge to store your perishables in the common room Free Wifi that works well in all rooms An excellent tourist guide in the lobby (Get Lost in Amsterdam) Bike rentals (15€ per day) Snack machine (which vends beer) Large TV in the common room (if that is your thing) Smoking allowed in rooms Free towels, just ask Hair blow dryer (if you ask) Tram 9, 10, 14 all close by. Nice local bars and restaurants in the area There are some other goodies on offer, but you should come stay here for yourself and learn about them in person. Sometimes, it is the experience in life that makes it all worthwhile. Note: CASH ONLY

Yelp
I had a really wonderful experience in hotel Hortus. First thing first, the location is really convenient and you get your own room which was really comfortable. In the room there is a one little sink , king size bed ( per 2 person ), one TV and a little wardrobe for your clothes. Room was really clean and warm. Showers and toilet were shared with others but they were always clean. Also the prices changes around (40 to 30) if you can find a special price from booking or another web site. Also there is wifi which can be really important ! Breakfast was really nice too. Also, staff is really helpful to us too. I really recommend. And return back for sure !

Yelp
My boyfriend and I had a reservation at the Hortus Apartments. Being new to the country, we were directed to what we were informed were the Hortus Apartments by a local hotel clerk nearby. Upon getting to the Hortus Hotel (again assuming we had arrived at the Hortus Apartments), the front desk clerk asked about our reservation. Just as she was informing us that my reservation was not on file, the hotel manager approached us and addressed me by name (presumably overhearing it mentioned in the conversation), letting me know that my room was ready. At this point, the manager took over and quickly directed us upstairs to a room. Neither he nor the clerk checked or scanned my ID, passport, or checked my email confirmation for the booking (which would have shown that we were at the incorrect location). Although the room did not look anything like the photos we saw online, we shrugged it off as the photos not being up-to-date. We stayed two nights, not discovering we were at the wrong location until the morning we checked out. The owner checked us out and said the room was unpaid for, simultaneously informing us that the actual guests who had the room reserved had been redirected to another hotel because we were in their room. At this point, we registered this as very suspicious. However, as we were checking out, it was too late to do anything about it. I showed the owner my email confirmation to confirm that I had in fact already paid for a room. It was at this point that she told me we were at the wrong hotel. We explained that we had been misled by the manager at check in; however, the owner offered no monetary compensation or even an apology. All she said was that the manager had "made a mistake" and that we should have gone to the correct location. I worked as a front desk clerk at a hotel for three years. The first thing I was instructed to do when checking a guest in was check their ID and confirmation booking (if a reservation was made in advance). I explained this to the Hortus Hotel owner, but she proceeded to dismiss it as a mistake and refused to see it from our perspective. She would not let us leave without paying, so eventually my boyfriend paid for the room. I very much feel that we were scammed. Having worked at a budget hotel in the states, we had better check in procedures than I experienced here. I warn any future guests to reconsider staying at the Hortus Hotel.

Yelp
I have to say I love this place. I stayed here for about 2 months which was my 1st trip to Amsterdam and never did I have any problems with anything or anyone here. The people that stay and work here are great, they come from around the world and are totally cool with each other. They serve a small breakfast in the morning which is good to get your day started then you can move on to a coffee shop or cafe and have something nice to really get your day going. I just loved Amsterdam for everything that this city offers, how everyone rides bikes everywhere and the people are all nice here. I recommend going to the local only spots to really get a taste of the city and the places here.
