Hospes Palau de la Mar

"Located in a bourgeois residential district on the edge of Valencia’s old town, this 66-room hotel was created from an elegant nineteenth-century town house to which a substantial modern annex has been added. Despite its classical facade, the Palau’s visual signature is monastic minimalism—the library, lounge, restaurant, and reception area are all hidden from view off a stone-paved central staircase with elaborately carved wooden railings. Upstairs, rooms are spacious, stark, and comfortable, with black-stained plank floors, built-in furniture, oyster-gray walls, and large marble-accented baths with deep tubs and separate showers. There’s also a sun terrace, a pool, and a fitness center, as well as a restaurant that serves contemporary Spanish cuisine."

We had a pleasant stay in what I would categorise as a 4* hotel that needed attention if it was to retain that star rating. |What I liked:|1. The staff were all very pleasant and I suspect that the issues that I raise were not their fault but rather the fault of the systems in place.|2. The bed and pillows were comfortable.|3. The hotel was conveniently situated in the old town.|What needs attention:|1. Our room was a ‘deluxe’ one I assume based on size alone . But it needed some serious TLC- the grout round the bath needed attention as there were sections that were black; the wooden ledge against the wall had a hole in it in which someone had put a used coffee pod; the ledge was chipped; the bedside light didn’t work as I discovered on the last night.|2. Breakfast was extremely disappointing for a 5* hotel. The first morning (Thursday) was chaotic with not enough staff to deal with the customers - the first coffee ordered when we sat down arrived but a second one never appeared and we gave up; the coffee machine and ‘system’ of serving it was hopeless even when the restaurant wasn’t full- a second cup was very hit and miss in that it might arrive or it might arrive and be awful; while the food was nice no one seemed to keep an eye on whether things had run out which they often did. If there’s a huge choice that might not matter quite so much but as there wasn’t, it did matter. |3. Many clients will leave for very early flights as we did. I would expect in those circumstances to have the cost of the last breakfast taken off the bill or more agreeably to be provided with a delicious picnic breakfast as we were done months ago from the wonderful Hotel Casa Cacao in Gerona. Neither were offered . |The hotel could do so much better !

Just back from a wonderful stay at the Hospes Palau de la Mar. The hotel is in a very convenient position within walking distance to everything, close to bus stops and the Metro. All the staff were fabulous, very friendly and accommodating. |We were absolutely delighted to discover we had a private terrace with two chairs and a table; what a bonus! The decor was super, just white walls and dark wood, all in keeping with the lovely building. It was clean, quiet, great shower…..I simply can’t fault it. |We made use of the pool, which is small but perfect for a refreshing dip (book in with the reception staff).|We had a great stay in Valencia, it’s an interesting and very beautiful city. We felt safe everywhere we went and were impressed with everyone’s friendliness. |Highly recommended.

The service and staff are totally 5 star, had a fantastic stay and they did a lovely surprise for my mum's birthday. Overall rooms are spacious and beds very comfortable and we had a quiet room to the back of the building. The hotel is very central and within walking distance to many attractions and metro. The only reason I didn't make this a 5 out of 5 is that the rooms and the spa need some TLC, a lot of broken tiles, missing grout (sink was very wobbly) and overall heavy usage can be seen. Nevertheless we had a great stay and would certainly stay there again.

The staff were friendly and helpful from the outset and, remained so. The hotel is a beautiful venue, breakfast time worked well and love the fact that the breakfast times were adjusted for the half marathon on the Sunday. Room (310) a little bit small but nicely done. We will be back!

Lovely, spacious room with very comfortable beds. Breakfast was delicious with a variety of hot and cold foods including options for gluten and lactose intolerance. Excellent location within walking distance of key attractions. All the staff were friendly and helpful at all times. Thanks for a memorable stay in Valencia.

My wife and I stayed here for a few nights. The welcome on arrival was great, all of the staff were very friendly helpful and professional. The room was clean, tidy and room serviced twice a day. We both slept well as the hotel was very relaxing. The location of the hotel is brilliant for a visit to Valencia. Definitely stay here again when visiting Valencia

I had a wonderful stay here. The location is easily accessible and walking distance to many of the tourist attractions and shopping. The hotel accommodations are well thought out. The front staff are helpful and pleasant. The beds are comfortable well maintained and the housekeeping staff are attentive. The breakfast was plentiful, and tasty. The pool area has jets, a waterfall and lounge chairs with plenty of towels along with a steam room. I purchased a spa package which was relaxing one of the better massages I have experienced. I would stay here again

My husband and I stayed at this hotel for a week. While the overall experience was pleasant, I wouldn't classify it as a true 5 star establishment. The rooms were decent holiday inn kinda vibe, but lacked any special touches that would set them apart. Before our arrival, I called to let the hotel know that we were celebrating our honeymoon. The staff surprised us with a bottle of cava, which was a very nice gesture that we truly appreciated. They also gifted us chocolates every day, another thoughtful touch that made us feel welcome. However, one of the most significant disappointments was the bathroom. We stayed in room 114, and every time we took a shower, the entire bathroom flooded with water. This is something I would never expect in a 5 star hotel, and frankly, it’s an issue we’ve never encountered even in hotels with fewer stars. The silicone seals around the shower were also in poor condition old and crusty, clearly overdue for replacement. These kinds of details really matter, since it was a sliding and trip risk too, especially in a high end hotel, and their neglect was surprising. Other aspects of the stay were also less than ideal. Breakfast was not included, and at €22 per person, it seemed overpriced so we didn’t have it. The pool required a reservation and could only be used for one or two hours at a time, which was inconvenient so we didn’t get a chance to use that too. On a positive note, the staff was very nice, professional and welcoming, their efforts to make our honeymoon special did improve our stay. However, given the issues with the bathroom and the lack of attention to detail, I would hesitate to recommend this hotel as a true luxury experience.

Yelp
Wish the rooms on my recent visit to Hospes Palau de la Mar were as easy to secure as a front-row seat to a telenovela! My train ride from Madrid thrummed with anxiety, each jolt matching my frantic heartbeat. This Valencian gem awaited, but the internet gods had other plans. My first booking attempt through Amextravel vanished into the digital ether, leaving me in a panic worthy of its own soundtrack. Salvation appeared in the form of Marriott.com, its sleek interface offering a lifeline. Success! A wave of relief crashed over me... only to be swept away by a horrifying realization. In my haste, I'd booked the same luxurious room twice. Visions of a doubled bill haunted me. Thankfully, the hotel staff proved as gracious as their elegant surroundings, and the folks at Amextravel were masters of undoing digital disasters. As the train screeched into Valencia, I stepped off, wiser and a tad weary. Lesson learned: sometimes, the simplicity of a phone call beats the thrill of an online double-booking debacle. After all, real life has enough drama without adding technology-induced chaos.

Yelp
The moment you walk into the hotel, the friendly concierge folks welcome you with smiles and all kinds of helpful info to explore Valencia. This was 180 degree different experience from our previous hotel in Madrid, both being 5-star hotels. We received a free room upgrade and it was large and beautiful and quiet. My husband and our son enjoyed their swimming pool in the afternoon while I was working. I must say this hotel is being managed right. A couple of hotel staffs came by to give us a complimentary water and chocolate and to make sure we have enough toiletries. I will definitely come back to this hotel next time we are in Valencia and highly recommend to anyone! Especially if you have young kids, this is the place to be. Lastly, the location is fantastic! It's close to pretty much everything and within walking distances to all the museums and lots of restaurants.

Yelp
Really beautiful hotel in nice location in valencia. A peaceful walk to the downtown cafes and square. Room is absolutely gorgeous and a very nice size for european hotels. Had a private little walkout balcony. Staff was friendly. If you are a starwood loyalist and are choosing between this and the westin, Id chose the westin. I stayed at them both and they both are great, but the westin beats it in service.

Yelp
This hotel is excellent - it is located more in the center of town than it is by the beach. There is, however, a service that the hotel offers where the hotel will arrange for transportation to the beach and provide an umbrella rental, beach chair rental, water, another beverage, and towels in the price. I thought it was an excellent value and extremely convenient. The customer service we received was excellent. All of the staff was extremely friendly and more than willing to help us and answer any questions that we had. From what I observed, most patrons of the hotel speak English and I overheard the staff speaking very good English as well. The rooms themselves were very nice, although the beds were a little uncomfortable. The bathrooms had the scent of fragrance, which my sister and I realized was from the scented toilet paper! The speed of the Wifi in the room was good. There is a small, yet convenient gym, on site. The breakfast was good and featured a selection of different Spanish cured meats, fruits, etc. I would recommend this hotel to anyone who is looking to stay in Valencia as the location is good and the service is great.

Yelp
This is my second stay at Palau de la Mar. Two years ago I spent 9 days in this charming, modern yet cozy, beautifully designed boutique hotel sits quietly in the middle of a beautiful block filled with townhouses and historic buildings. Minutes from the bustling center of town, you might pass it by thinking it's another private residence. Elegant and subtle in its exterior, it is the perfect spot for the discerning traveler. The website doesn't do it justice, frankly. The white walls are warmed by the year-round Valencian sun, and the wood touches are the perfect complement. The entry hall has sky-high carved doors which bring you back into the past while the contemporary design lets you know you're in the present. The restaurant, Ampar, is outstanding. I can't remember a breakfast buffet quite as copious, or as delicious. Multiples of everything imaginable are arrayed beautifully and quickly replenished. And there's a menu of omelettes and other egg choices, made to your taste. For no extra charge. Wow! The service is lovely as well. One dinner in the same space was outstanding, as was the next one-- served outdoors in the beautiful patio terrace. A three course lunch including unlimited beverages and coffee, for 19 euros was a find. Aside from being delicious, the service was quite special. I just returned from my second stay, this time for 11 days. I would like to add my thanks to the manager of the hotel, Vicente Juanis, who showed concern, kindness and professionalism and a clear desire to make this hotel the five star establishment it is. At the end of my 11 day visit, I awaited my cab in the lobby. Señor Juanis came over at once to greet me/say goodbye/ see if I needed anything. The Palau is my home-away-from-home in Valencia and I look forward to my next stay in this beautiful, historic and warm haven. I love my home (Manhattan) but I was sad to leave this beautiful hotel. If you have the chance to stay here I hope you enjoy it as much as I did. You are in for a treat. ¡Gracias a todos!

Yelp
I was totally blown away by this hotel in the heart of Valencia! First of all, the architecture is just beautiful. The foyer and reception is in good shape and the check-in was done quickly and friendly. The room we stayed in was soooo huge, the shower (kind of a walk-in-shower) was a dream so was the bath tub... Best thing in the bathroom: the amenities. No cheap crap but good, exclusive smelly creams and gels. One night we had a little snack in the hotel bar which was nothing special but nicely presented. At all times my partner and me were adressed by our names. WOW, cool. Breakfast was included and for the first time in a spanish hotel I experienced highly professional breakfast service. Our cutlery was changed after every "course". It seemed like nothing was too much trouble for the staff. We always had a happy start into our day in Valencia. The whole hotel was clean and well maintained (you dont see that too often in Spain). A total plus point is: it is situated only about 10 minutes from town! You reach everything in just a short time and there is absolutely no need to take a tube or bus to go anywhere. We parked our car in the garage and I think the price was 20€ per day but well spent: the streets are full of cars and only if you are really, really lucky youll find a parking spot. Usually, 5 stars in Spain dont mean 5 stars and more than once I have been disappointed by so many Hotels. But the Palau de la Mar deserves every single star and we were thrilled to have found such a wonderful place to stay in the most beautiful city in Spain.
