Yelp
This hotel was a bit on the quirky side, but served our needs just fine. We stayed a total of three nights (before and after a cruise). Given that scenario, we were extremely grateful that Hotel Ilaia was amenable to holding some extra luggage in between our visits. They had a secure room to hold the luggage for the ten days between our visits.
I initially booked the hotel through their website and had prompt email communication with them. The hotel is located outside the main tourist area of town. You can definitely walk in/out of town (you're still in town just more of a residential area), however we did find more comfortable taking a cab at night. There is a bar at the bottom of the hill as you walk towards town, which on several occasions had inebriated patrons hanging out (or in some cases sleeping on the ground) outside. During daylight hours it was pretty easy to avoid, but given how inexpensive cabs are, just made more sense to avoid altogether. While it's not the hotel's fault, I think it is important to let folks know.
The beds were extremely comfortable, though we would have preferred a little more space for luggage. Of course this is coming from someone who had two suitcases (part of a month long trip - normally I pack on the light side). The rooms were impeccably clean. Internet was available in the rooms, though one evening it was definitely acting up and not working.
Breakfast each morning was quite the experience, in a good way! Coffee, tea, and juice are offered. The staff will serve you breakfast at one of the set tables in the common area adjacent to the lobby. Additionally, fresh fruit (apples and bananas) were offered to mix with homemade granola, jam, and yogurt. A great start to the morning. That wasn't it though, some tortillas were brought out along with mashed avocado and queso. Breakfast was thoughtfully put together and served, they definitely don't want you to rush it, so plan accordingly when letting them know what time you plan on having breakfast.
The staff was extremely friendly and helpful. They assisted us in making restaurant reservations, suggestions for restaurants if we were unsure, and arranging taxis.
If the location were a little closer to town and slightly bigger rooms, I'd be five stars all the way.
