In my mind I was calling it the "Blue Roof Inn". It's not as bad as a Red Roof Inn, but gives you an idea of what you'll be getting. It's not a hotel, it's a motel that's been tarted up with some paint and basic decorating. My review is 3 stars because I think this is really a 2 star to max 3 star accommodation, room experience was 2 star but front desk staff (the same guy over a 24 hour period- poor man!) was 5 star.
Husband & I stayed here on a Saturday when we were going to a special dinner in Del Mar- he stays with IHG a lot and booked through them- he said from the photos he thought it looked like a cute boutique hotel. I saw a few and yes, they are..."optimistic" let's just say.
Positives: The lobby gives a good general impression, and the deck behind has a lovely view to the ocean. There are dog bowls around so looks dog friendly. Location is good near things to do in Del Mar and right near the beach.
We arrived around 3pm and the front desk guy was very friendly and gave us a room upgrade to a king suite. I don't know what the upgrade was from, but it was a bottom floor room at the west side of the hotel overlooking an empty parking lot. It had a bed and a separate room with seating and TV.
We entered the room and it was immediately clear it hadn't been cleaned yet (unmade bed, trash, dirty towels on the floor, food, and room keys still inside) so we went back to the lobby and waited about an hour for them to clean our room, and it was then clean but still found hair in the shower.
Bed was decently comfortable and room had everything you would need but some things were a bit odd..a weird paint object on the wall, the sink vanity has hardly any space to put anything, and the bathroom door is slatted and right in front of the bed, so hope you and your roommate enjoy knowing everything about each other, or plan to leave the room when they need the toilet. The shower trim plate was also coming loose from the wall.
Noise levels at this place were ridiculous. The guests are not the hotel's fault but there is no soundproofing. There was a rowdy sports team staying upstairs- they sounded like teenagers but were staying on their own- yelling, slamming doors nonstop, running around like a herd of elephants. You could hear everything, including their conversation, through the walls and the white noise we had on loud. They were super noisy till wee morning hours making it really difficult to sleep. They started up again around 6/7 am...along with the sound of cleaning trolleys rolling down the hall. Hubs staggered back to bed from the coffee maker and said "I feel like I've been camping" lol.
The guy at the front desk was so nice and apologized and waived parking because my husband mentioned the noise, and we felt bad since he was the only front desk staff we saw- he checked us in, was there at 10pm when we got back from dinner and he was at the desk again when we checked out in the morning!
We paid zero for this place because of points and thankfully so, because if we had I would be upset. If you're looking for a boutique hotel experience this is not it.
If you're ok with staying in an inexpensive motel type place this may be what you're looking for.
