"High in the Basque mountains, surrounded by green valleys and ancient towns filled with stone houses, a 17th-century palace awaits. From the outside, it seems to have barely changed in four centuries—its stone walls weathered, its arches and wrought-iron balconies regal, its manicured gardens and terraces as inviting as when nobility meandered through them. Inside, each room has been lovingly restored, from the hardwood floors running throughout to the dark ceiling beams and the ornately carved doors. But, despite the Renaissance-era artwork and antique furnishings, the palace has been brought into the 21st century. Its style blends modern with historic using high-quality fabrics, soothing neutral tones, and elegantly understated contemporary furniture, all of which feel like they ought to have been used in the house’s original incarnation. While the bedrooms seem fit for the royalty who once lived here, the rest of the palace is equally decadent. Gipuzkoa is world-renowned for its cuisine, and the in-house Bailara restaurant more than lives up to expectations with its own take on molecular gastronomy. The wingback chair- and fireplace-outfitted lounge is as perfect a spot to sip the region’s signature cider as the breezy garden terrace that overlooks the dramatic valley below. If you were a 17th-century noble, you’d have built this palace, too."

Iriarte Jauregia, Bidania, northern Spain - Explore & Book

"The landscapes of the Basque Country come as a surprise - you could almost be in an Alpine valley here. Big hills soar, lush fields sparkle, thick forests roam across the land. The terrace at this lovely hotel is the best seat in the small town of Bidania, a 3-mile sweep across the valley. Old boys make hay in the fields below, cows graze, tractors rumble and eagles soar in the sky. There is deep peace here for those who seek it.As for the hotel, it’s a 300-year-old mansion, strategically positioned on the side of the hill so the original owner could watch his men at work in the valley below. A beautiful renovation has kept all the lovely old bits while adding contemporary flair. You climb the hill from town, nip across the greenest lawn, then step into a vast hall. To the left is a smart bar and an attractive sitting room; to the right is a superb restaurant with doors onto a dining terrace. Upstairs, 19 super-comfy rooms come with excellent beds, fancy bathrooms and a warm, uncluttered style. If you are looking for good food and stylish interiors in blissful country, you’ll find it here. Highs A perfect retreat for romance and R&RWalking in the surrounding countryside, then doing very little in the hotel itself Owner Iban and his staff, who go out of their way to look after youFantastic food in the restaurant: perhaps Iberian pork loin or fried cod with spinachSan Sebastián - a great little city on the beach - is just 25km away Lows You’ll need a car to get here; this is a fairly remote locationThere’s no swimming pool, but you can nip up to the beaches on the coast The weather in the mountains is unpredictable - you may get a day of rainThe restaurant's opening hours are seasonal, but there's a "Quick and easy" menu available daily, and simple restaurants in town" - Tom Bell

Iriarte Jauregia (Bidania-Goiatz, Basque Country) 18 Hotel Reviews | Tablet Hotels

"Iriarte Jauregia is located twenty-five minutes south of San Sebastián — close enough for guests to explore the vibrant city, but sufficiently removed to provide a deeply relaxing pastoral experience in the lush countryside of Gipuzkoa, a small, verdant Basque province. Housed in a fully renovated 17th-century palace, with the trappings of a modern boutique hotel carefully tucked away behind the original structure, Iriarte Jauregia feels eerily integrated with its breathtaking environment." - Tablet Hotels

OMG what a beautiful spot. Super quiet top of hill location. Away from everything. The staff is fantastic. They have a Michelin star restaurant on site. Breakfast was great. The fruit was perfectly ripe. I would absolutely go back.

Hotel IJH is a gem of a property located deep in the Basque countryside. Set in a gorgeous rural environment atop a small village and surrounded by hills and farms, it is the perfect country getaway. The building is a stunning as the photographs and the rooms have an elegant vintage charm to them. Regarding food, breakfast was our favourite meal while the meals at the cafe being a little unswervin underwhelming. We never got a chance to try the fine dining option as it was closed 3-4 nights a week. All the staff was very friendly and helpful. I want to put a special mention and appreciation for some front desk staff who went above and beyond to assist me with a concern with my car rental company. I faced challenges dealing with Avis due to a technical issue but the staff helped me with the language barrier and service concern in a foreign country and I want to reach thank them from my heart. Look forward to visiting again. Also a special mention for the most hard working employee at the property the automated lawn mower. Rain or storm, Day or night he didn’t stop 😉

Fabulous hotel in a superb location in the countryside. Beautifully renovated interior and most gracious hosts. We ate in Bailara restaurant and the food was superb. On 2 nights we ate in the bistro and weren't disappointed either. Breakfast was excellent and the buffet replenished constantly. I must say that I loved this place. There are so many local places to visit and the in-house QR code guide tells you everything. You do need a car to stay here. Highly recommended.

We chose this hotel because we wanted to get to know the region and not have to enter the city every evening. It seemed like a good choice to us. But from the moment we arrived we discovered a place that exceeded our expectations. A friendly work group makes you feel at home. Friendliness, excellent rooms and brilliant cuisine.|They have two restaurants with different characteristics. We met both, and we really rated the menu at the gastronomic restaurant with a top.|The weather helped us have breakfast on the terrace all three days and it was a constant enjoyment. The detail they have in using freshly made products, excellent quality and good taste is appreciated. It has been a wonderful experience, and we will return!

Rooms and location good. Need be careful here as some staff were pleasant and nice but others were poorly trained and subdued. The owners of this place need look after their staff to improve moral and training. The set up with the 2 dining rooms is absurd. You eat a poor quality meal in a atmosphere less, Uncomfortable and poorly decorated dining room (my onion soup was like drinking water) and my beef cheeks were overcooked and not tender whilst the waiters are carrying through the superior plates of the tasting menu to another dining room. Understand the differentiation but You do feel a bit like you are in Economy class

Getting to the hotel is to say the least interesting, a narrow and winding road leads you eventually to a delightful building which has obviously been lovingly restored by its owners, let’s start with the initial impression there is no friendly greeting by reception merely the formalities of documentation and exchange of credit card details, our room was consistent of what you would expect of an updated old Spanish residence, clean, tidy and with a modern if compact bathroom.|I never like being negative but the place lacks even a modicum of ambiance, there is no feeling of warmth or hospitality, the bar area is cold and uninviting, we ate in the Bistro so can’t comment on the Michelin starred main Restaurant but the Bistro is again uninspired and lacks any sort of ambience mainly due to the appalling lighting, architecturally a delightful room but with lighting more appropriate for an airport lounge and absolutely zero ambiance, the staff strutt around with their earpieces more like bouncers than waiting staff and despite being pretty much full it was a place of silent whispers. It could be so much more but failed to impress.

The hotel is beautiful, full of characterThe location is a bit remote, however the drive was worth it The Michelin restaurant in the hotel is incredible Don’t expect much amenity in the room , just basic compared to other 5 stars hotel chain

We loved this hotel and particularly liked it being in a quiet area. We spent days visiting nearby towns along the coast, but we looked forward to returning to relax in the afternoons and evenings. One of our favorite activities was taking a hike right out the front door of the hotel. Their Instagram page gave us perfect trekking directions for the 6 mile hike we chose. Beautiful! The breakfast every morning was delicious as well.

Yelp
This old "palace" (as they call it) is a beautiful stone building far up on a hill in a small village south of San Sebastián. It takes around 35 minutes to drive from the hotel to central San Sebastián. We asked the hotel reception for a map and they recommended us where to park close to San Sebastián Old Town which was very useful. They didn't have that much information about which pintxos bar to visit however. It's good to know that some bars are open for lunch and close during the afternoon and open again for dinner. And other bars only open at night. Don't miss these: Bar Nestor (lunch or dinner) http://www.yelp.se/biz/bar-nestor-donostia-san-sebastian-2 Txepetxa (simple pintxos) http://www.yelp.se/biz/txepetxa-donostia-san-sebastián Zeruko (extreme pintxos) http://www.yelp.se/biz/zeruko-san-sebastián Also: Koh Tao (great coffee) http://www.yelp.se/biz/koh-tao-donostia-san-sebastián Arzak - one of the best restaurants in the world - (book FAR in advance) http://www.yelp.se/biz/arzak-san-sebasti%C3%A1n-2 We had room 103 and it was just what we'd hoped. Classic and beautiful but not too much. The bathroom was newly renovated and the sheets were clean. Only thing we didn't like was the home scent they had sprayed in the room prior to our arrival. If you get hungry there's both the Bailara restaurant (by Enrique Fleischmann) and a snack menu in the bar, in the Iriarte Jauregia Hotel buildning. Tip to guests: Book far in advance to get a better rate. Tip to Iriarte Jauregia: You should definately do something about the big electricity pylon in front of the hotel that destroys the view.

Yelp
Beautiful modern hotel inside an ancient castle: A+ Would stay again and again. Superb locally grown and raised cuisine on site, and nearby farms to visit and partake in endless hospitality that is the essence of the region and its people.
