While not all fixtures are really fixed at the Hotel Istra, we were so satisfied with our stay that we felt giving it anything less than five stars would be misleading.
It is a wonderfully cosy place, tucked in the very heart of Varaždin, so close to everything in town that it makes the whole Varaždin feel like your extended living room.
The rooms are significantly more spacious than expected, the little minibar fridge fully functional to receive the fresh fruit from the nearby farmers market (the "plac") and the staff smiling and ready to help at every turn.
The oriel corner window ("erker") in the hotel cafe on the first floor overlooking an intersection of busy pedestrian streets is surely the best place in town to have breakfast, or a nightcap.
And one more thing: although the temperature outside went up to 35C during our stay, the room was never too hot - and we never switched on the (otherwise fully functioning) airco during five nights of our stay.
