Hotel Johann Berlin

I love this hotel! This was my third stay and it has been consistently great. The rooms are clean and stylish, we got the comfort room and it never felt crowded with three people. I have also stayed in the single when I was by myself, tiny, but good if you are out and about and just want a quiet, clean, comfortable place to sleep.

We spent three nights at the tastefully and chicly furnished Hotel Johann in Berlin-Kreuzberg. It's a lovely hotel in a quiet location. Yet, it's very centrally located. The rooms are beautifully furnished and modern. If we were to visit Berlin again, we would definitely choose the Johann instead of checking into one of the ubiquitous large chains as anonymous guests. We really enjoyed it. The staff were all very friendly and accommodating. Thank you for the wonderful stay we had at the Hotel Johann.

What a lovely hotel -- in a bucolic, quiet neighborhood yet near wonderful restaurants, bars and shops. I'm usually a fan of luxury hotels with amenities and room service, and this is more of a boutique hotel, but we could not have been more happy with our stay.

My wife arrived alone at Hotel Johann at 5 pm for a prepaid stay. The property was locked, check-in was entirely self-service with nobody on site and the street outside had heavy road construction and limited lighting. Cars don't access the property so there was quite a bit of walking with luggage to be done before arrival. She did not feel safe entering an unattended property in those conditions. After finally entering her room, she decided to book elsewhere and left immediately, before 6 pm or within an hour.||We did try to reach the hotel by phone without success at first (Management later apologized for this) and only later managed to get through and receive instructions on how to be let in (apparently there was an email with self check in instructions). By then, the combination of poor lighting, walk in the dark, waiting to be let in, road construction works, and lack of staff presence had already made the arrival experience quite distressing for first-time Berliners.||Management (Celia) later explained that the construction is naturally outside their control (though this could be communicated to guests in advance) and that the self check-in system is standard for late arrivals (even at 5 pm ?) and declined any refund because the booking was prepaid and outside the free cancellation window. In our view, when a guest has genuine concerns around safety, access, and lighting and leaves straight away, a partial refund or gesture of goodwill should be considered.||Three stars because communication was polite and we had done extensive research on this place before picking it, but we would not return. If management feels like I have left something out of my review, I am happy to review it.

Quiet neighborhood, nice clean rooms, lovely reception staff. Everything we needed was okay walking distance or accessible by rental bikes.

I've just completed a two-week stay here, and it was wonderful. It was my first time in Berlin and I did a lot of sightseeing and concert-going each day, so it was great to return to such a warm, well-appointed environment as my home base. The hotel is located near several easy transit options, and the rooms are very comfortable and quiet. I opted to purchase the breakfast service during my stay - a really great selection that left me satisfied and primed for the day. Highly recommended. Every employee I encountered was kind, friendly, and very attentive to guests' needs. All in all, a terrific experience that really added to my trip. Without hesitation, I will look forward to booking here for my next visit, which will hopefully be quite soon!

Best Hotel Ever in Berlin Everything was first class. Service, cleanliness, friendliness, breakfast and very modern facilities.

Rooms were comfy, but there was not much lighting, and the designer light bulbs had exposed filaments. I would prefer softer lighting with diffusers, and more of it. WiFi disconnected all the time and was generally very slow on the ground floor. Breakfast was only OK and not great value. No hot options in the buffet and no hot chocolate from the machine.

The short version: A clean, spacious hotel in a quiet neighborhood with pleasant and friendly staff. But the room had some quirks, and the location is inconvenient enough to be a dealbreaker. The long version: We stayed here in October 2023 partially based on the Yelp reviews, so I wanted to share details from our week-long stay that could help you decide if this hotel works for you. First, the pros. The hotel is in a quiet residential neighborhood that felt very safe. Our room had nice wooden floors and vaulted brick ceilings and was pretty big for a standard room. We arrived late because of a delayed train, and their after-hours key safe worked perfectly. The service was definitely the warmest and friendliest we experienced in Germany! Their breakfast is $14.50 and includes a large spread of cheese, cold cuts, soft-boiled eggs, yogurt with fruit and granola toppings, bread and croissants, juices and an espresso machine. Laundry service is available for $7 a bag and takes 24 hours. Now for the cons. The biggest drawback is the location. It's about a 10-minute walk to several U-bahn stations, yes. But those stations connect to the U6 and U7, which are secondary lines that don't go to a lot of touristy places. If you think about the central U-bahn map as an oval shape, it's on the bottom right, whereas many of the major tourist destinations are on the top of the oval. So getting anywhere on the U-bahn means taking the long way aaalll around the oval and making at least one transfer. The faster routes involved a lot of buses and S-bahns, but still, going anywhere took at least 30 minutes. So it's not easy to just stop by the hotel to change clothes, drop off stuff, etc. - it will add an hour there and back each time. This definitely added up and kept us from being able to go to as many places easily. The location alone probably means I wouldn't stay here again. Other random stuff - for whatever reason, the bathroom has a sliding frosted glass door on a track that sits a couple of inches clear of the wall. So even when the door is "closed," there's a wide gap and the person inside is clearly visible if you walk past. There's no fan in the bathroom, so basically it might as well be in the bedroom. So this room is really only for singles or couples who are VERY familiar with each other, and even so, the bathroom situation is not very romantic, lol. Also, the hotel is centrally heated and you can't control the heat in your room. The room would be overly warm when we came home in the evening, but then could get fairly chilly at night. When we asked about it, they offered extra blankets but said they couldn't do anything else. Overall, I would say this hotel is best for people who don't plan to use the U-bahn much, or for people who have data and are extremely comfortable trip-planning with buses/street trains/trams. If you want to be in a lively neighborhood, or if you want to be able to jump on the metro and go a few stops to lots of tourist destinations, this isn't for you. But if you mainly want a clean, quiet hotel in a nice neighborhood, the Hotel Johann is a good value.

Lovely small hotel in a perfect neighborhood - a short walk from a small branch of the Spree River and charming restaurants along the water. Also walking distance from great restaurants and bars. The staff was super friendly and helpful. The breakfasts were spectacular - such great meats and cheeses, and perfectly boiled eggs. I made sandwiches every morning for lunch. Our room was clean, modern and bright. One warning - the shower stall was super slippery. I slipped and fell. I suggest putting a small towel under your feet. Did the trick fine. I'd go back in a minute!

We stayed at this hotel for 3 nights in august 2012 and loved it. Staff was very helpful and friendly and are available 24 hours a day. Close to several train stations. Bike rental on site. We took the time to review, which we honestly never do, because we enjoyed it so much. Would definitely stay here again.

Great hotel and well priced. Small but very comfy room, and very clean. The reception staff were very friendly. It's located in a residential part of Kreuzberg, across from a canal and a pleasant biergarten. There is a U-bahn 10 minutes away on foot, and a bus less than that. I didn't have the breakfast but I'm sure it's good. Will stay here again.
