"Rest your head in a 17th-century palace in the heart of medieval Motovun, an enchanting little town that tops one of Istria’s numerous hills. The hotel’s small spa with an indoor pool is a lovely spot to unwind, the restaurant offers stellar Istrian specialties, and the 33 rooms are all tastefully designed. The real draw here, however, is the historical setting—just off Motovun’s main square with its Renaissance palace and church. Sip coffee on the chestnut tree–shaded terrace in front of the hotel, or simply enjoy the vistas of Istria’s bucolic landscape from your room."

We stayed at the Hotel Kastel for a couple of nights as part of an InnTravel walking holiday. Situated in the hilltop town of Motovun, it offers splendid views, although the climb up is quite steep.|Our room offered a comfortable bed, and a decent sized bathroom. Breakfast was included, and whilst the staff were rather overrun, the food was good, as was the picnic we were provided for our walk. We ate at the hotel one night – a nice meat platter, outshone to be honest by the sunset from the hilltop.|The spa is downstairs, and we enjoyed the pool after our walks and a massage too. Overall, a good spot and recommend the hotel, even if they are seemingly a bit short of staff.

This location and venue are magical. They took care of our every need for our wedding and guests. The guests could not stop commenting on how perfect everything was. When we renew our wedding vows in 40 years we will be back!

The location of this hotel could not be better. It is on top of the mountain in the center of the walled city. I understand that the rooms vary greatly in size and quality but ours was remarkable. It was large and looked like a room in a castle with relief art on all the walls and the ceiling. There was a chandelier and the bed had a canopy and curtains. We had a balcony with a courtyard view. The bathroom was nice. You should pay attention to the email they send the day of your arrival that explains the parking situation. We did not see it and, therefore, had a struggle with the parking. You park behind the church where the road to the top is blocked and call the hotel for the shuttle. The parking is discounted for hotel guests. We had trouble calling the hotel and the people in the little kiosk near the parking tried to help but it didn't work for them either. But they kindly persisted until they got someone and the shuttle was sent for us. The hotel is only steps from dining with an amazing view and from the few sights and activities in the walled part of the town. We completely enjoyed our stay and highly recommend the hotel.

Very good hotel with very nice staf. We were warm welcomed and received several tips for a nice stay. Good room and nice breakfast. Nice stay overal. It is a very beautiful location and from here you can make various day trips. To reach the hotel you have to drive up a steep mountain, so being handy with a car is required.

Staff not particularly friendly or forthcoming. Rooms just ok. Central; cute location. Lots of older guests/tourists (rare to see someone under 55ish). Breakfast was pretty good- self serve buffet style with machine for cappuccino/espresso etc. indoor pool nice to have but only heated to maybe 80ish degrees. No hot tub. Sauna works well. Steam room and Kneip lacking.
