The best place to stay in Appenzell offers breathtaking views and feels straight out of a fairy tale. The hotel has been newly renovated and features an Italian restaurant downstairs, so you don't even need to drive into town. What impressed us the most about this hotel was not just the stay or the location, but the exceptional service we received. From the moment we arrived, Polina came out to help us with our luggage and stroller, even carrying our baby up to the third floor while we managed the rest of our things. When we requested hot water, she promptly brought us a kettle. She also provided berries for our baby, arranged our table for breakfast the next day, and even prepared apple puree for our little one. The list of her thoughtful assistance goes on. Whatever we needed, Polina was there to help. Throughout our trip in Switzerland, we had not encountered anyone as dedicated to caring for guests as she was. Polina also shared local attractions, food recommendations, and hiking tips with us, making my wife's time enjoyable as they discussed various topics. During checkout, she surprised us with a thoughtful souvenir. I highly recommend this hotel to families visiting Appenzell.

Honest review of a SOLO traveler without a car. The hotel is being renovated and they’re doing a wonderful job. The room was clean, the interior feels homely and the breakfast buffet has a good variety, but I LOVED the made-to-order bacon and eggs. What really makes this hotel shine though are the people who run it. When I booked this property, I made the mistake of not checking its location--you can’t reach it by bus or train. There is a local shuttle service that can take you to and from, however, their app is mediocre and you need to plan your rides ahead of time as it can take some time before a driver becomes available. Fortunately, I caught my error in time and reached out to the hotel for guidance. Jannine, from the hotel, scheduled for someone to pick me up at the trains station to take me to the hotel. I was extremely grateful for that service. Once I got to the hotel, I downloaded the app and got lucky with minimal wait times to go into town and to the gondolas around the area. Every interaction I had with the people at Hotel Kaubad was genuine and kind. Polina’s attention to detail and caring demeanor did not go unnoticed, and I am grateful for all of the effort you put into ensuring my comfort and wellbeing. Dibraun’s hospitality goes above and beyond. If you are traveling to Appenzell without a car, I recommend reaching out to Hotel Kaubad through email or Whatsapp. Their location also has great hikes and mountain huts you can dine at. I promise you, staying at Kaubad is worth it.

Lovely little hotel with very kind staff. The owners go the extra mile. The rooms are cosy with lots of wood, new bathroom, nice bedding. Very quiet area with beautiful walks. Doggy friendly. Convenient parking space. Restaurant is rustic and food is of excellent quality. Selection of wine is basic but good. Breakfast is nice although the Corona shenanigans have found their way up to the Alp, unfortunately. All in all a great experience and highly recommendable.

Staff are fantastic (seriously - thank you!), location is gorgeous, and food is wonderful. The only negative is the lack of elevator or chair lift. My father had a hard time going up and down the two flights of stairs.

Super friendly staff and overall great experience. We left early in the morning to hike, so the host prepared a lunch box for us and even added some disposable ponchos. Also we weren't charged for bringing a dog.

Had a very nice stay in this hotel. Very friendly stuff, the owner is a great cook and he offered very nice variety of food for the 5 days of my stay there. The hotel is perfectly located in a valley and you can hike up in different directions (like Scheidegg) for better views! The hotel has a free wi fi, a very nice heated swimming pool and a sauna. Also there is a small living room with TV (where we watched Champions League final) and a conference room. Overall very satisfied with the stay.

We rented their ferienwohnung as we there is one double bedroom and one triple bedroom. The apartment is big, with a nice living room area. The kitchen is lovely with a view over the field. The bathroom is big, with the shower and toilet included. I have to say the apartment was immaculate including the oven and the fridge. And you really have everything you'll need to cook. We could enjoy the use of the pool and the sauna at the hotel and had the breakfast included as well. Breakfast is continental and generous. Outside there is a great playground and a beautiful scenery. I really recommend this place for its peacefulness, the kindness of the owner and the great hikes that you can go with your kids.

This hotel is more of a destination for health-conscious folks. I loved the indoor swimming pool, and the welcome fruit, cookies, candy, tea, coffee, bon bons, etc. on the landing between floors. There was no elevator, so you haul your bags upstairs but the staff of this family-owned hotel were all helpful and quick to offer assistance. The GPS took us to the middle of town, but this hotel was about 10 minutes outside of town. An excellent breakfast was included, and all other meals were available. Pet friendly, and many guests brought their dogs. There were miles of walking paths, and you probably know how picturesque and walking-friendly Switzerland is. The town of Appenzell is famous for its cheese - have fondue or raclette at the restaurants, and the town also has an extremely reasonably priced souvenirs, household items, and cafes on its shopping street. The only caveat is that if you can't sleep when it's hot, don't go in the summer months - European hotels say they are air conditioned, but it's nothing like we are used to in the US.

Yelp
Very nice accomodations in the hills. Welcoming owners, very clean and comfortable. Room furnishings were a little dated but still functional. Wonderful restaurant with breakfast buffet included with reservation. Would stay here again.
