This hotel is more of a destination for health-conscious folks. I loved the indoor swimming pool, and the welcome fruit, cookies, candy, tea, coffee, bon bons, etc. on the landing between floors. There was no elevator, so you haul your bags upstairs but the staff of this family-owned hotel were all helpful and quick to offer assistance. The GPS took us to the middle of town, but this hotel was about 10 minutes outside of town. An excellent breakfast was included, and all other meals were available. Pet friendly, and many guests brought their dogs. There were miles of walking paths, and you probably know how picturesque and walking-friendly Switzerland is. The town of Appenzell is famous for its cheese - have fondue or raclette at the restaurants, and the town also has an extremely reasonably priced souvenirs, household items, and cafes on its shopping street. The only caveat is that if you can't sleep when it's hot, don't go in the summer months - European hotels say they are air conditioned, but it's nothing like we are used to in the US.
