What a great small boutique hotel! It's centrally located and right next to Jackson Street Pier, which was beautiful. While the rooms are on the smaller side, it was perfect for just my husband and me—we didn’t need anything larger. The hotel has a completely different vibe than any place we’ve stayed before. The design is modern and bold, with black walls and an exposed brick accent wall that adds character. The bathroom was a good size and up to date. Everything was very clean, and the bed—along with the pillows—was exceptionally comfortable. For the first time ever, we stayed in a hotel where the curtains truly blocked out all the light, which made for a great night’s sleep. Although we didn’t dine at the restaurant and bar downstairs, it looked inviting. We did check out the rooftop bar and thoroughly enjoyed the view—it’s a must-see. The staff were exceptionally nice and welcoming throughout our stay. Overall, a great place to stay—we would definitely return!

I recently stayed for an overnight trip and really enjoyed my stay. The staff was very friendly and helpful, the room was clean and the decor was very nice. I did not get a chance to try the restaurant or bar, but heard it was okay from another guest. There are some cool shops in the area. I went during the off season, but would love to come back when it's nice out. I will say the ear plugs in the room was nice, because it did get loud through the night.

The hotel is conveniently located near Jackson Pier and the downtown area, which places it close to many shops, restaurants, and pubs all within walking distance and free, public parking right across the street. It was, however, a little difficult to find. We expected to see a sign on the door identifying the hotel. There is a sign on the building near the roofline, but it is not readily visible from the sidewalk. What you see instead is the logo of the on-site restaurant OhTaco! Once you go through that door, though, you find yourself in the lobby of the Hotel Kilbourne. |The lobby is small but charming, manned by a friendly and efficient front desk staff full of information about the area. |We booked a city-view king room and found it to be equally as charming and cozy. Besides the plush king-size bed, the room came equipped with an espresso machine, mini fridge, and electric fireplace to provided ambiance. In addition to the usual amenities you expect to find, the room also came with complimentary earplugs. The on-site restaurant, Oh Taco, has a busy bar. There is also a rooftop bar at the hotel and previous reviews said it could get noisy enough to make it hard to sleep. We had no problem with noise during the Friday and Saturday nights that we were the and enjoyed our stay immensely. The next time we visit Sandusky we plan on returning to this location.

Three night stay while in town for Cedar Point and it was great. Gerry (sorry if it's with a J) is such a welcoming spirit and very helpful during our stay--we loved her! Our room on the second floor was on the smaller side but it was clean and updated, and I thought it was perfect for our trip. The upstairs bar has a great view and the main floor taco restaurant was delicious. This is in a great location and very walkable with all the "downtown" activities nearby.

So, to begin, let me say that a plus side, the room does look nice. You would think you will have a great stay.||HOWEVER….||First off, parking is trash. They have very little parking in the front, side parking and back parking is always full because of the bar. Speaking of the bar, it’s literally right below the bedrooms. Music is playing till 2am, and I mean playing loud. They do however provide ear plugs so that’s sweet of the (Sarcastic Voice)||The pictures that you see, some are accurate and some are not. I approached the front desk and he (Some dude with a goatee) confirmed the pictures haven’t been updated. Oh and wait till you look at the cart they have to load your bags…I’m surprised I didn’t get tetanus.😂||Here’s the kicker! I paid full price over $800 for three days through Expedia. I knew what I was paying so that didn’t shock me. What did shock me was that Hotel Kilbourne literally tried to charge me another $800 after I was back home. Then they tried to blame it on Expedia but it shows through Capital One that it definitely was the hotel. Luckily Capital One has my back and is disputing the charges.||Moral of this story, pay attention to the 1 stars on these reviews. This place may look nice and even somewhat feel nice when you walk in but I assure you, you’re going to have a very bad experience with this place. Just find a cheap hotel somewhere cause you will more than likely enjoy that than Hotel Kilbourne.

The place was cute, staff was great, bar was awesome…. But the room was not clean. Pillows smelt, bugs visibly on window sill, and we shared a room with my parents so we had the pull out couch. Minute we pulled the cushions off there were crumbs like crazy and it looked like someone spilt milk on and it was never check to be clean! Unfortunately we didn’t pull the bed out until 12am so we had no staff to ask to come clean so we had to suck it up and lay on the bed. Also, the pull out couch was broken and the WORST pull out couch I have ever been on. So I recommend getting two rooms or go to another hotel or your getting no sleep. I been to worst, but I still appreciate sleeping on a somewhat clean bed and that wasn’t the case.

Family trip to Cedar Point...found this gem on Google map search. Great hotel...never been to Sandusky and I don't know why I had a predisposed negative opinion...maybe Tommy Boy??? 🤷🏽‍♂️. Anyway, this hotel is in a great location and whole family enjoyed our stay. As mentioned in other reviews the rooftop bar was awesome. The hotel itself was very nice..and the staff, specifically Geoffrey was great! If you're planning a trip to this area, don't discount downtown Sandusky and try to book this hotel...you won't regret it.

My fiance and I stayed Friday and Saturday night for Halloweekends for the price we paid I’m disappointed and we won’t be back. I will say the staff was helpful and friendly but that doesn’t make up for lack of rest. There is a taco restaurant/bar on the 1st floor. Our room was on the second floor right above the restaurant/bar. We could hear the subwoofer/bass until 12am, when they closed. Saturday night I did ask the front desk if it could be turned down, I was told, “I’ll ask but I’m not sure they will”. My fiance and I heard the subwoofer until 1am. The beds were uncomfortable and we both woke up sore. The pillows in my opinion were to soft. If you don’t have streaming then don’t bother watching TV, it just buffers. All in all I would choose elsewhere to stay.

Yelp
This review is for a Saturday night stay over Thanksgiving weekend in a Luxury Lake View King. guest room If you've stayed in a 21C, then you'll be familiar with the design and amenities. The heat in our first room was only marginally working, but the front desk gladly moved us to an upgraded room. That heat was a newer, more efficient model and was also somewhat cool. Both rooms had space heaters, so we were fine. Noticed the room provides ear plugs. Staff said if it was noisy it should quiet down after midnight when the bar closed. That said, we didn't notice any noise. food and beverage We drank at and Yelped both Oh Taco downstairs and Moseley's Rooftop Bar upstairs. In addition, within walking distance is a surprisingly vibrant restaurant scene, with everything from gastropub to sushi. The next morning, we brunched and Yelped Wake Up and Waffle. Who knew Sandusky was a foodie town? staff Front desk staff was professional and polite. Great recommendations and suggestions. Desk is not staffed after midnight, but they have a number you can call. Desk also not staffed in the morning. You just drop your keys and go! There is a local gift shop in the lobby which has some cool, local options. location This is a renovated three-story building in the heart of downtown. Something like nine rooms total, plus the restaurant and bar. Free surface parking is across the street.

Yelp
I could go on and on about the pros and cons. Mostly cons. Two of the desk attendants were wonderful, one was not. Overpriced, cheaply built with cheap furnishings. I'll put it this way, instead of saying "I stayed at The Kilbourne" say "I stayed at a Holiday Inn Express". This will avoid your wallet being emptied out at The Kilbourne.

Yelp
This has the potential to be a really nice hotel, but it needs some better management. It's very loud there's only a few rooms per floor and you can hear the elevator every time it dings. The rooftop bar was kind of pleasant. The taco restaurant we waited an hour to get some chips and salsa, completely unacceptable they were out of chicken they were out of steak they were out of everything on a Sunday night. This is justA really nice part of town it's too bad this is not a better hotel for 300+ a night it should be exceptional in Sandusky Ohio.

Yelp
We had a horribly disappointing stay in July. I was really excited about booking this non-chain hotel, but it was a headache from check-in until weeks after check out. We booked through Expedia and prepaid for the stay through the site. In order change our checking date to one day earlier, the hotel rebooked us and requested payment upon check-in. Even after advising them it had already been paid, we were asked to produce a credit card. Cons: We were charged for a 3rd person, even though the booking had been made for 3 people.... The room had a loud fan above the bed, a bright blue light coming from the refrigerator, and the world's worst, most uncomfortable mattresses. Pros: Close to the water and some restaurants. There was a coffee shop we could walk to and a cute shop, restaurant, and rooftop bar at the hotel. Parking was not an issue, as the area was basically a ghost town. More cons: Checked out early as no one had gotten much sleep during our 3 night stay because of the awful mattresses, noise, and bright light situation. Nothing like leaving your vacation needing sleep and wanting to go home early. Returned home to find the initial charge AND an additional stay charge from the hotel on the credit card bill. Called the hotel twice to have one of the charges refunded. I was told they didn't believe this happened and claimed the hotel was not at fault, also that they were "very busy" so the manager could not come to the phone, "all the notes have been taken" and "a manager will get back to you". Manager didn't call. I called one more time to give the hotel a chance to check their records and issue a refund, with no luck. I then called Expedia and had a 40 minute phone conversation, during which they had to verify we had been doubled charged and immediately issued a refund. I found it most interesting that once I got Expedia involved, the hotel could no longer deny they had gotten paid twice for our stay and only then, could I get a refund issued. I wanted to love this place and visit over and over again, but absolutely will not stay again or recommend this hotel to anyone. It was a huge waste of time and money and an ongoing source of frustration.

Yelp
A great boutique hotel. The only reason I'm not giving a 5 star is that the ceiling heating unit in my room was very noisy. Excellent other than that.

Brent F.

Yelp
Booked hotel room and prepaid for it and when I arrived at the hotel with my family they had already given my room to someone else and we had nowhere to stay. Not reliable place to stay. Need to improve upon their system they use with Hotels.com and other third party sites. Leaving families in this situation is unacceptable.

Julie O.

Yelp
I had to switch rooms because the smell of cleaning sprays while being overpowering failures to cover the smoke and sour sweat smell. The next room was also powerfully "fragranced", but what kept me from sleeping was the way loud fan/vent in ceiling and the music from the bar. I was assured I wouldn't hear the bar, and also, told it closed at midnight. As it's just after midnight and am unable to sleep in the mushy bed with the loud loudness and at my wits end knowing I spent So Much Money I am writing this review. This phony boutique hotel is silly and stinky, in equal parts.

Yelp
Open in App Barbara H.'s Reviews 1.0 star rating We stayed 1 night during bike week. 2022. The prices were were so expensive. They definitely price gouged. They took advantage of travelers because our room costs 400 something with taxes. Then they scammed us out of 500 dollars more saying a picture of a cup with cigarette came from our room. When I told them, NO ONE SMOKED IN our ROOM...they said well the cup was brought in the room and caused the smell. We were told several of the cleaning staff checked it and smelled smoke from a paper cup with a butt in it. It still had a bit of coffee in it. The best part... Staff was out on the sidewalk out front smoking, 4 of them were smoking, one of which was called to the front desk to prove the cup was ours. The workers brought the smell into the room. We were already price gouged then they tacked on 500 more. It was now 900 dollars for one night. We were told they charged other people in a different room 500 because of cup picture with cigarette butt in it. They refused to share the picture. I am guessing they reuse the picture to carry out their scam. The staff was rude and we only had one key fob. The other one didn't was broken. Snack and drinks are outrageously priced.

Cynthia G.

Yelp
Well, we had high expectations from the website, and that didn't come to fruition. There was no parking, you had the option of parking 1 block, or 2 blocks away carrying luggage, and you had no idea if your car was safe. Staff seemed bothered by you and unfriendly, very militant. I asked if they had ice, she looked at me like I had 2 heads, then said maybe the restaurant can give you a cup of ice. You have to use a key just to use the stairs. Shower floor looked dirty. The room seemed smaller because color scheme was black. OH, the best part is they give you earplugs because it's noisey. What if there was an emergency, you wouldn't know with earplugs in. You heard everything upstairs. Just wasn't a comfortable place at all. They give you the option of snacks and drinks, the smallest size the company makes by the way, and they charge 4 to 12 dollars each. We paid for 2 nights, A LOT of money too, and we just left, didn't even stay 1 night. VERY DISAPPOINTED

Yelp
We visited Sandusky Ohio last month in February for our birthday weekend getaway. We live just over an hour away and wanted to explore the area. Usually Sandusky is a great summer destination for us because we love Cedar Point amusement park. But there are still things to do here in the winter as well. The hotel staff that greeted us were so nice and went above and beyond to make us feel at home. Thank you to Nicole and Risey. The hotel is quaint and has only 4 rooms per floor with a penthouse on the third floor. Our room was decorated beautifully with exposed brick behind the bed. The hotel featured a Mexican restaurant, a favorite for us. We will definitely come back and stay again!

Charles E.

Yelp
Horrible. Over priced. "City View" is across the street to the parking lot. They provided the wrong internet password and it took several phone calls to straighten it out. Paper cups were provided instead of glass and they did not provide not enough of these. 50 cent snacks were marked up to $6. The room was clean enough and the bathroom was nice, but they skimped on the towels. There is no place to pull over and check in. You have to find a place on the street and lug your bags a block or two to the the desk. They bill themselves as a boutique hotel but that is a stretch. One person was on duty and she needed to call her manager to answer questions. No breakfast provided. We will get out of here as soon as we can tomorrow morning, if we are not blocked in by motorcycles.

Mohammed O.

Yelp
Very poor situation of the room with reeking smell of marijuana!! We never signed up for this and it was supposed to be a nonsmoking room!! There was no forewarning of the situation - when we pointed it out, they confessed there was a person smoking in the room and they'd charged him extra for it - and gave the same room to us!!

Daryl J.

Yelp
I called and they said they were open until midnight, we showed up at 11pm the bartender was rude and didn't let us in. She decided to drink afterwards with her friends. I won't come back.

Yelp
Gorgeous, small hotel with a great location. I stayed for 3 nights and picked Hotel Kilbourne because it's near a lot and I was a sucker for the brick wall decor and knew there wouldn't be a bunch of families staying there. Pros: The staff is very friendly and I loved the room. Comfy bed, large TV, nespresso machine, very clean, amazing waterfall shower and a lot of extra towels. It is right on the water so even if you don't have a lake view room, it's just a short walk and it's near a lot of bars and restaurants. Amazing rooftop access, you can even see Cedar Point! Free coffee and tea in the lobby in the morning. Cons: Our city view was actually a few of the parking lot so if possible, try to get the lake view! You could hear everything happening outside of the hotel as well as next to and above you. Very thin walls so if you need quiet, this probably isn't the place for you. Our pillows smelled HORRIBLE. I'm not sure if it was just a fluke but they honestly smelled like fart. We took off the pillow covers and that helped. The last con was just that there wasn't very much information about the rooftop bar. We were never sure of the hours and when we wanted to go, it was always insanely crowded so I wish we could have experienced that. All in all, I would stay again but not 100% sure it's worth the price unless you get a lake view!

Yelp
This is such a great hotel. Location is wonderful. Staff are so kind. And the rooms are perfectly clean. Plus, I could stay here alone for just the shower, even the toiletries are nice. (I travel for work often and I feel I'm a good judge.) The little shop off the lobby is adorable and trendy. I love the local artwork, jewelry, candles and supporting small businesses through this store. The hotel is an amazing place and keeps the charm of Sandusky alive. Thank you!

Natalie K.

Yelp
This place is really chic and cute. The brick walls and modern bathroom accompanied by a large shower makes the place really fun to stay. However, it sounds better than it is. The rooftop bar is small and can become crowded fast, as well as the restaurant on the main floor. This makes getting to your room a hassle when a lot of people are around. When your room is directly below the bar, expect a very noisy experience. The shower head was gross and didn't look like it had been cleaned in a while. I didn't mean to remove the sheet that covered the mattress, but I'm glad I did. Why is this hotel still using this mattress cover if it's obviously stained with urine? Why is this acceptable? Can't say I'm surprised, it's an average hotel. Can't expect "too" clean.

Yelp
In our escape from hurricane Irma so happens we end up in Ohio and made our way to the beautiful small waterfront town of Sandusky and came across the boutique hotel Kilbourne on hotel tonight app. We called to ask few questions and Amy was very nice and helpful. So we booked it and enjoyed our short stay in this quaint little charming hotel. The bed was super confortable and the room was quiet and soothing. The have a beautiful terrasse on the top with a view on the water as well as one downstairs. All the staff was lovely.

Yelp
We recently stayed here for our 3rd wedding anniversary in July. Beautiful location, rooms are stunning, the brick wall is a very nice touch. The rooms are stocked with delicious snacks an drinks, downside is they are a tad pricey ($5 for a single twix bar) We loved the hotel and the feel, however we ended up having to take our six month old with us, when we hadn't previously planned to, and it isn't really a family hotel. This is fine though, as we had planned to be alone, but a lot of people seemed weary that we had our little one with us (he didn't make a peep though, and was actually more quiet than some of the guests on our floor) We plan to stay again, next time with out any children, to hopefully get the full experience, like the rooftop bar. This is a great spot though, right on the water, near all of the best places to eat and explore. Only reason I can't give it a full 5 stars is because we didn't feel very welcome when we came in with our little one (we did call prior to update) and the rooms are not very sound proof, so we actually ran into the issue of the other guests waking up us and our little one.

Christine D.

Yelp
Beautiful little hotel. I stayed in the penthouse/loft room. Very private and beautifully decorated. The bed was comfy and the linens were nice. There was a quirky, narrow little balcony space, with a view of the exterior wall. The room had an espresso maker. I would have preferred regular coffee, but I got my caffeine fix. The hotel is near the Jet Express to Put In Bay, however, this locations stops running after September. That was a bit disappointing, but the drive to Port Clinton wasn't bad.

Yelp
This review is only for the rooftop bar. What an excellent little place!!! Great service, great view and a well-curated menu. Absolutely and whole heartedly recommend this gem for your pre-dinner libations when you're in Sandusky!

Yelp
I was visiting my in-laws and my wife and I went for a drink. I'm from the west coast and loved the atmosphere and service! It has a great LA boutique vibe. I would definitely recommend!

Yelp
Hotel rooms are nice as hell, and it has a great bar. Great view on the rooftop. Great restaurant downstairs. Would go back.

Yelp
My wife and I stayed at this hotel in early October for a getaway weekend in Sandusky. It is definitely a first class operation. There are two bars at this hotel with one of them being located on the roof overlooking Lake Erie which was very nice. The hotel has a more mature feel to it especially compared to some of the chain hotels in the area which was perfect for a couples weekend. We will be back!

Yelp
Great place! Comfortable room with helpful staff. They have a small bar below with appetizers. I was here for a training with my company and felt right at home. Very clean and updated look.

Matt C.

Yelp
Great place! The staff was very friendly and the room was perfect (big comfy bed, cool decor, nice bathroom, etc...).

Shelby W.

Yelp
We had a horrible experience with the staff, and rooms were far from what we expected for the price we ended up barely staying in the room and sleeping on friends couches.
