Fabulous hotel in the middle of Vejer. We had one of their apartments and it was great. Bedroom and bathroom downstairs, kitchen and living space in the middle and big roof terrace at the top. For a mixed weather weekend it was perfect as we used all of the space. I would say the bedroom/bathroom were a little small - but the pay back is the other spaces above. I think next time we would go for a hotel room. Exceptional breakfast which we didn’t realise was included so a great surprise in all respects! Just be mindful that it’s a old building with lots of narrow staircases and some low ceilings - all part of the charm!

This is probably our favourite hotel anywhere. The staff, reception staff in particular, are exceptional. The overall ambiance is great, created to a large extent by the way in which the hotel has been put together, where every room is unique, each with its own particular quirks. Breakfast in the wonderful Jardin del Califa restaurant, is a treat and pre-dinner cocktails in the bar with spectacular views of the surrounding countryside, are not to be missed. Two nights never seem quite enough.

Aside from the wonderful views and terraces, the best part for me was the kindness and helpfulness of the staff. Toni in particular helped me tremendously sorting out how to get to the rental car agency in the neighboring town, arranging a taxi, and advising me on where to park. None of this is quite easy in an older town like Vejer De La Frantera, and for someone who speaks very little Spanish and is a first time visitor to Andalusia. Toni went out of her way to help. My wife and I also enjoyed the large comfortable beds and sunny terrace for chatting, having a glass of wine or reading a book. Would highly recommend this hotel to others.

Very atmospheric and cosy hotel in the heart of historic Vejer. Not at all suitable for anyone with mobility issues.|Staff were attentive and courteous.|Breakfast is superb although service was painfully slow - waiting 25 minutes for your first coffee of the day is not ideal! Dinner in the restaurant was mixed, although it’s possible we didn’t order the right things, not being too familiar with Moroccan cuisine.|Rooms were comfortable and stylish, but very dark - more light is essential.

A wonderfully quirky boutique hotel with North African themed decorations and a sumptuous restaurant. It’s staff are friendly and welcoming, the vistas from the balconies and bar terrace on the roof are majestic. Plonked on the heart of this beautiful ancient hilltop village, it’s a winner for me

We have stayed at Califa a few times in different hotel rooms an absolutely love it . This time we stayed in Casa de Palomas part of Las Palmeras. A stunning town house with roof top overlooking the square one side & the hills & Spanish buildings the other side. This was the best yet ! The house was beautifully interior designed with everything laid out perfectly . We still had access to the little pool & the rooftop was amazing with wonderful views. Great to have the two sunbeds & table for dining. One day it was international jazz day an we had the joy of listening & watching jazz & dancing in the square & beautiful Spanish guitar & singing from Califa cocktail bar from the other view. It was a fab day an all from our rooftop. We had the yummy Moroccan breakfasts a delicious coffee every day at the hotel . The waiters a waitresses do a grand job in looking after us with one waitress remembering our coffee choices an even ordering seconds when we hadn’t asked. I wish I had got her name as she looked after us so well an always with a smile. The ElJardin restaurant was amazing ambience an excellent food as usual plus we tried Califa tapas at their new venue . Great team of staff an great food . The Califa hotel reception staff are always exceptionally helpful . A big thanks for making our stay a perfect one. We will be back to the magical Vejer de la Frontera xx

There’s no doubt that this is by and large a popular and well-reviewed hotel (see other reviews) but it seems that one or more rooms are not up to scratch. Alas, we had one of these (room 2) where there was a strong fruity smell of sewers in the bathroom that brought back heady memories of backpacking around the corners of the globe thirty odd years ago. The room had a small window with bars on it which again, like Proust’s Madeline’s, prompted powerful memories of times past, which sadly are not for public airing. ||Still, it’s pretty cheap I thought as I lay on the admittedly comfortable bed. My reverie was broken by the neighbour from the next room peeking in through the bars as I had opened the window enough to help with the odours emanating from the bathroom. || Luckily I had read my booking wrong and turned up one night late into our two night stay but I was glad to get away. So, yes, this seems a fine place to stay from the testimonies of fellow reviewers. But dig deep and you’ll read a few more reviews along these lines, presumably from guests unlucky enough to also be given the keys to the dreaded number two, which perhaps appropriately smells so startlingly like the number allotted to it.

Probably the nicest hotel during our Andalusia tour. Really cosy, original place!
