In-Depth Review of Le Dune Piscinas in Sardinia, Sicily - AFAR

"Set amid an 11-mile stretch of deserted beach and Europe’s tallest sand dunes—part of a UNESCO World Heritage site nicknamed the “Little Sahara of Italy”—this luxury resort occupies a converted mining warehouse on Sardinia’s wild Costa Verde. Opened as a hotel in April 2024 after serving as Colonel Caroli’s private villa, the property retains mining-era features (including an entrance tunnel carved in the early 1800s) while offering modern, design-forward accommodations by architect Enrico Favero and PL‑AG Studio: 28 rooms (including nine suites) finished with sandblasted Orosei marble, exposed stone walls, and custom Sardinian fabrics, plus seafront highlights such as the Lady Idina Master Suite (968 sq ft, private spa, teak terrace and pool) and a Junior Suite with a private garden and pool. Dining emphasizes Sardinian ingredients and Mediterranean flavors—an intimate red-walled dinner restaurant adorned with murals by Federico Carta (Crisa), a casual seafood spot serving malloreddus and culurgiones, and an American-style bar where bartender Stefano Musselli’s Palomino (blanco tequila, pink grapefruit liqueur, Sardinian strawberry tree honey) is a signature aperitivo—while attentive, highly personalized staff can arrange dune hikes, horseback rides, diving to a 17th-century shipwreck, boat trips to hidden coves, and vineyard visits. Practical notes: the drive from Cagliari Airport is about 1.5 hours on winding, sometimes dusty roads (allow more time), the final stretch is a dirt road, the hotel closes November–February, it’s best for quiet escapes and couples rather than family-focused stays, accessibility is limited by sandy terrain despite some ground-floor accessible rooms and parking, and the property follows sustainable practices like reduced water use, elimination of single-use plastics, and LED lighting." - Jenn Rice

15 of the Best Hotels in Sardinia for a Taste of La Dolce Vita | Condé Nast Traveler

"Located on the pale-ochre sands of Piscinas beach about an hour’s drive from Cagliari, this 28-room hotel occupies a former Ingurtosu mine warehouse and blends a sleek, contemporary aesthetic with the area’s industrial past and Sardinian craftsmanship. Designers Antonio Gardoni and Luca Platto introduced bespoke oak and wicker furnishings, artisanal textiles and original stone walls and a grand fireplace in the lounge; rooms feature cast iron beds, white linens and sand-tinted Orosei marble floors with bas-relief walls that reference local traditions. There are two restaurants—casual Il Ginepro and the more gourmet Rosso Tramonto with walls painted by Federico Carta—plus a gym, a small spa and an outdoor pool." - Nicky Swallow, Lucrezia Worthington

Le Dune Piscinas Ecoresort & Beach (Arbus, Sardinia) Verified Reviews | Tablet Hotels

"It’s almost hard to believe that Le Dune Piscinas began life as a humble warehouse for mining materials, or that the golden dunes that surround it hide the remains of a 19th-century mine. After a radical transformation the property has been reborn as a luxuriously soothing retreat, which feels far from everything except the beach and the blue waters of the Mediterranean. The 28 rooms look across the dunes and the sea—you can even hear the waves at night—and some come with balconies and terraces to place guests even closer to the sands. Interiors nod to traditional Sardinian design, note the tonal bas relief walls and cast-iron beds, as well as the building’s mining history, with Orosei marble bathroom floors sourced from nearby quarries." - Tablet Hotels

I had seen some negative reviews of the hotel, but had also seen it on a couple of best lists, so still wanted to give it a try. Unfortunately, I left pretty disappointed. It's a journey to reach the hotel, but it's in a beautiful and unique location right on the beach. I received a room upgrade which was appreciated, and the room was very nice. However, the acoustics of the hotel are terrible, so it was very loud in the room both from outside and above. To get out to the beach, you have to walk through the nice bar downstairs, and the pool is tucked away on the other side facing the parking lot, so you have to walk back through the bar and reception to reach that, which seemed like an odd setup. You are assigned a beach chair based on your room number, which in theory is a good plan, but when I arrived later in the afternoon there were numerous chairs open and I instead had to sit a foot away from multiple couples because of my assigned chair. I was attacked by gnats as soon as I sat down, so didn't make it long out there anyway.||My experience at the bar was the highlight- the bartenders were friendly and attentive, and my drink/aperitif was great. However, dinner was a disaster. When I arrived, there was no one there doing the seating so I had to wander around and try to talk to three different people before I located the hostess. I had booked for one, told her it was for one, and she still felt the need to say, "So you are alone?" When I was seated, I was not given a drink or wine list, and had to ask numerous times to receive one. No one seemed to actually be assigned a waiter to give a greeting or introduction or ask questions; instead, as I was trying to get a drink, a man just came over and asked what I wanted. I explained I was still trying to get a wine list and had not decided yet. When he came back later, I tried to ask him for some advice since I didn't have a waiter- I explained I was between the gnocchi and the linguine with clams. His response was that if I wanted fish to get the linguine- super helpful. I ordered the select three cheeses from the trolley, but rather than actually being able to select, a man just dropped off three with some spreads. When I tried to ask about making the selections, I thought he was having difficulty understanding me but instead he was just being rude and said they are pre-selected. If that is true, the menu should be clearer but at the very least they should be telling me what the cheeses and spreads are rather than just dropping them. My pasta came out before my starter had, so I again had to talk to multiple people to discover that my starter had not been ordered. I told the man what I had ordered, but then was brought out essentially a caprese salad, which was not even on the menu. I had to try and flag people down again to figure out what happened. To his credit, he took the item off my check, and I'll give him the benefit of the doubt that he was trying to give me what he thought I wanted, but it felt a little like assuming the American just wanted a caprese. I am a slow eater, so the speed of service was not a huge issue, but my water was not refilled once, I was never asked if I wanted another drink, or even checked on at all throughout the meal. For what is supposed to be a high end resort, the lack of care and attention was pretty unacceptable, and it ended up being my least enjoyable meal after several weeks in Italy.||Breakfast was a very nice spread and service during that was actually attentive. While checking out, I explained I was in a rush to get to the airport, but it was painfully slow and I was incorrectly charged hundreds of euros for what was supposed to be an included amenity with my stay that I did not even utilize. I asked if my large suitcase could be brought down and taken out to the car park while I went up the steep hill to get my car; he instead brought it down and left it behind me at the desk and started to walk away, so I had to ask again for it to be taken out to the parking lot, which just seemed strange. Overall a disappointing level of service not worth the journey or price.

Le Dune resort is located in a unique location, with a fantastic history, a beautiful beach with the highest dunes in Europe all around and recently it has been full refurbished adding pieces of arts and trasforming this previously 3 stars in luxury 5 stars. As all revolutions the result is not fully achivied. Rooms are nice but not at 5 stars level: bathroom essential, without TV set (i.e: if it's a philosofic approach why some rooms have it). Customer Service is good all team was fully committed and very kind. Breakfast is good but 5 stars one are different. Due to the fact it's the only structure in a range of 20km you've to eat in one of the 3 restaurant, but they're not really 3 restaurant, it's the some restaurant in 3 different spaces, 2 with a fixed menu. Food is very good but after a week you're fed up, every day the same menù. So probably it was more honest and aligned with the location to keep an Hotel at 3 or 4 stars and not to target a 5 stars.

5 stars for location but 5 star service is something else. This hotel is wonderfully renovated and appointed and its location is stunning. Unfortunately the inefficiency and unfriendliness of some of the staff and too many amenities not working is not what to be expected from a 5 star hotel. No attention to detail and too many frustrating discussions. For example we would have expected at least a plate of fruit or a welcome drink upon arrival, the AC in our room was not working properly and after several trips to the front desk to have it checked it wasn’t until the ceiling caved in that they addressed the situation by assigning us another room. Restaurant staff was very confusing, roles did not seem to be clear, being asked the same question multiple times or not at all (wine was never offered at dinner, we had to ask… even for a missing fork…). The food was good but pricey given the remote location. No food or drink service at the beach area. The massage jets at the pool did not work and only one of the pool treadmills was usable because they “lost” the other remote. Housekeeping was also inconsistent, we had to ask for toilet paper and did not get the turn-down service either of the 3 nights we stayed there. Check-out is at 11 but only one front desk staff available who seemed overwhelmed so it took a long time. We did manage to have a very relaxing stay thanks to the location but everything else was frustrating for the price point.

I want to rate this place 5/5 because it really is deserving of some very positive feedback. Minimalist but very nicely renovated, a remote vibe which you either like or don’t, we did. The access to the beautiful beach with barely anyone around is special and the food is really very good, some of the best we’ve had in Sardegna. The reason I don’t go full 5/5 is because as friendly as the staff were, they could just be little sharper and quicker on service. We had to wait a long time for our meal in the Rosso Tramonto. A nearly 4 hour long dinner is just too long for me, and when the sun went down it was windy and cold. We asked to go inside at the end which was fine, but they were not attentive to this. We also had to wait a long time for our bags to be brought to the car. Not a big deal, but just shows the staff still needs to be trained to be a bit more on the mark. Overall though a beautiful spot if you’re looking for a more quiet remote experience in Sardegna.

Unfortunately, our experience at Hotel Le Dune Piscinas (Sardinia) was far from what you’d expect from a 5-star hotel. Check-in was handled by a new, well-meaning staff member, but we received no introduction or basic information about the hotel—we had to ask everything ourselves later. We had big expectations to have a perfect closure of our 11 days trip over the beautiful island of Sardinia. When we asked if someone could help us get fuel in a canister, since our car was nearly empty and we weren’t sure we’d make it to the next gas station (especially given how remote and difficult the access road is), we were simply told “the gas station isn’t far.” No assistance offered—again, not what you’d expect from a luxury hotel in such an isolated location. Our room had no TV remote. After asking reception for help, no one showed up. Only after a follow-up call did someone come, said she’d check and get back to us—but we never heard from her again. When we followed up again in person, we were just told, “no TV.” No explanation, no apology. We’ve rarely experienced such dismissive behavior in a 5-star setting. We also asked about late check-out or luggage storage, as we had spa treatments booked. The response: there’s an event, talk to someone in the morning. No effort to assist or accommodate. We ended up canceling the spa—lost revenue for them, and a poor guest experience for us. The room itself felt neglected: we had to kill around 30 mosquitos, the bathroom fan didn’t work, nor did the ceiling speaker. It seemed like a room that shouldn’t have been in service at all. Even worse, housekeeping entered our room despite the “Do Not Disturb” sign on the door—an absolute no-go for any hotel, let alone a supposed 5-star one. The only positive note was the spa staff. They were professional, attentive, and even helped us with some issues the reception couldn’t or wouldn’t handle. A clear contrast to the front desk. While the location is undeniably beautiful and unique—as many reviews note—the hotel’s service, maintenance, and attitude fall far short of luxury standards. The “gourmet” restaurant is, at best, average. Sadly, not recommend for the price asked.

This hotel is amazing with a great mining history. The lodging is surrounded by sand dunes, and the sea. An extremely relaxing location. Be prepared for a rough last 10 km of the drive. I would not recommend trying to go there in the dark. Once you get there, plan on staying and enjoying yourself. This was the perfect place to end our two week vacation in Sardinia.

We stayed at this hotel for two nights and were greeted with great friendliness right from the start. The landscape surrounding the hotel is breathtakingly beautiful, and the hotel's private stretch of beach is gorgeous. We highly recommend this hotel to anyone seeking peace and relaxation.

The rooms are very nice and also the location in this marvellous and unique scenery is well situated. It's really a wonderful experience to enjoy dinner during sunset. However, the service cannot keep up with the beauty of the beach, the dunes and the sea: the lady at the reception had a quite strict way of welcoming us. And made us pay the stay twice: in her accounting system the advance paymemt was not recorded, so WE had to pay another time. In the morning, they realized their mistake and promised a prompt repayment - this was more than two weeks ago and I am still waiting for my Money, despite having sent already two reminder- the last one with absolutely no reaction at all. And also Düring the dinner, we were served wrong desserts, and after having brought this to the attention of the main waiter, the only reaction was a shrug of the shoulders. In the morning, the chef de service appologized for his team. So, all in all, it was a memorable stay, however, for a 5★L hotel which hast also this price level, there were too many mistakes - and this leaves a bad aftertaste.
