An Autumnal Road Trip Through Alsace Wine Country

"With two nights in Colmar, treat yourself to a stay at luxurious Hotel le Maréchal. The building itself was constructed in 1565, but the romantic vibes persist to today. Pro tip: when booking, request a room with a canal view."

Hôtel Restaurant Le Maréchal (Colmar, Grand Est) 2 Verified Reviews | Tablet Hotels

"Many urban neighborhoods have taken inspiration from Italy’s Floating City, from Venice Beach in Los Angeles to Little Venice in London. The French city of Colmar is one, as well, home to the canal-laced Petite Venise sector and the Hostellerie Le Maréchal, a boutique hotel housed in a traditional timber-framed house that dates from the 16th century. It has an enviable location right on the water, and a terrace restaurant that makes the most of it, specializing in traditional Alsatian cuisine served with a view. Guest rooms have old-world charm, with carved wooden beds, Oriental rugs, and framed oil paintings. Some feature separate seating areas and soaking tubs, and many face the canal. Watch boats cruising past your table over breakfast, then head out to explore the old town on foot; it’s all within easy walking distance." - Tablet Hotels

The hotel consists of several medieval houses joined in an interior maze. |Rooms vary much in shape and size.|The location is perfect for exploring the medieval heart of the city and the commercial areas around it, all on walking distance. |One side of the hotel faces the river and the other side the street.|The decoration and furniture are classical and nice making an harmonious balance with the age of the building. Bathrooms are modern, nice and comfortable.|We had 3 rooms : a) one suite of under average size with an open plan more like a junior suite. The bathroom was large but instead of a shower cabin it had a jacuzzi, which I appreciate as not beeing very practical ; b) a triple room generously sized with a nice bathroom; c) a deluxe double room of average size with a nice modern bathroom.|WIFI works very well.|Staff were kind although tight on quantity at reception. |The restaurant facing the river is nice and cozy and a maze in itself. They serve a good buffet breakfast. We had a fixed menu during Christmas days which was ok, although with limited options. |The only hotel feature I would not qualify as convenient is that they have no lobby or living room where to sit confortably. A small corner with 5 armchairs just 1 meter from reception makes for all of their lobby.

We had a beautiful and romantic stay here for our honeymoon! The bed was comfy and the view was stunning. I loved the quaint windows and the flowers in the window baskets. It felt like a fairytale. I do think our room may have been haunted 🤣 but that’s just part of the charm of a historic building! The reception staff were very friendly and welcoming, and if you’re lucky you might also get to see Stan the dog at the front office. The restaurant downstairs is of course absolutely fabulous as well. It was the best meal we had while in Colmar. The location is excellent to get around as well, noting that this is more of a tourist area and not near residential business and pharmacies etc. You are walking distance to museums, shops, and Petite venise. Make sure to take a romantic gondola boat ride while you’re there and glide by the hotel at sunset!! Overall it was a lovely stay and thank you to Hotel Le Maréchal for everything!❤️

We just finished a 3 night stay at this hotel. We had a standard double and deluxe jacuzzi double room. We have stayed at hotels all over the world and found this hotel to be the perfect mix of nice, quaint, comfortable and full of culture. Though the standard room was very small, the updated bathroom made up for it. Our deluxe room over looked the canal and it was stunning. Each room has working heat/air and water that is replenished daily. The hotel staff were more than helpful even having our bags brought to our room on arrival. We frequented the bar each night for a pre dinner cocktail and the waitress was incredibly attentive. I had the best Aperol Spritz I have ever had. The location of this hotel in little Venice is perfect! We were within walking distance of restaurants, shopping and the indoor market. We will absolutely stay here again and would recommend it to everyone! ||Good to know: the hotel does have a small elevator but most rooms have some stairs to navigate to access the rooms. ||Most restaurants in town do not open until 1900 each night and require a reservation.

Colmar was our most anticipated town on our Christmas markets trip. And it turned out to be the least magical due to our poor hotel stay. As soon as you get through the hotel entrance you feel like you’re entering winter wonderland. Beautiful Christmas setup nothing but magical. When you walk in the hotel it’s quaint, historial & extremely charming. BUT unfortunately we did not get to stay at a HOTEL, we were taken to an outside building which is the opposite of magical. As soon as you open the door of the annexed building you are taken somewhere completely different than what its promoted on LeMarechal website. They promote a romantic quaint hotel but instead we got what looked like a local dorm. There is actual locals living on the floor above. I asked the hotel clerk (Loan) and he confirmed there’s locals living in the annexed building. He said nothing could be done for us, at that point we just wanted to leave the property. If I wanted an Airbnb type of stay I would have booked such. We wanted a hotel experience, we did not want to feel like we were staying in someone’s dorm. We feel completely deceived. Disappointment & dissatisfaction is an understatement. I have attached photos, you can see & visit their website to confirm the brutal deception.

The reason we came to Colmar was for this hotel. The rooms looked charming. We were so disappointed on arrival. Our room was outside the hotel and down the Street through a dark court yard. There were no decorations in the room, and only one bedside lamp. Bathroom door had no lock and wouldnt close. We were completely removed from the hotel and literally saw no one from the hotel. We thought we were checking into the oldest hotel jn Colmar, even paid extra for the room, but we got a modern apartment jn an annex with no atmosphere! Be careful before you book!

We really loved our girls trip stay here!! We stayed in the main hotel as well as Chambre Meublee 1 (apt next door). The apt was just fabulous! Lovely kitchenette area, beautiful bathroom with shower, comfortable bed and fabulous view of the river from the window (no balcony). It was a 14 min walk from train station but that's where the historic area is which is packed with restaurants and shops as well as historic buildings. Very close to everything except the train (that's what Uber is for!) Warning: the main hotel bathroom had a somewhat trecherous tub

My husband and I loved our stay at Le Marechal. The attentive and friendly staff, from reception during check-in and check-out, the romantic atmosphere, and the location in Little Venice, made our stay fantastic. The breakfast was also delicious!!! I highly recommend Le Marechal if you are looking for a hotel full of nice details, art, and history. One of the best hotels we have ever stayed.

Google
An excellent small hotel situated in Colmar in one of the best locations in Alsace. Service in the hotel was excellent and very friendly. Dinner was superb combined with excellent service. I can recommend it.

Yelp
Our room was comfortable, the staff friendly, and the location great. But we were disappointed that our room, one of the more expensive options available, did not have a view. And it was a VERY long walk up many flights of stairs to get to our room. We picked one of the more expensive rooms - a room with a jacuzzi - and it did not have a view. You could see a parking lot out a window, but that is not a view. The hotel does not advertise this room, if you look at our type of room on the website, you won't see it. And we were under the impression that we had booked a room with a view. Overall, that was very frustrating. Not as big of a deal, but carrying all our suitcases up the very long and windy passageway to get to our room sucked. It was a total of about four stairwells, and some of them were pretty long. When the receptionist offered to help said there are stairs, they did not clarify what "there are stairs" meant. "There are stairs" was a huge understatement. These issues were not the biggest deal in the world, because the room was very well decorated and pleasant to stay in. In other words, while I do not consider these issues really acceptable, I still enjoyed my stay here very much. And the jacuzzi was very nice. But I probably would not stay here again. Great location, and I'm sure some of the rooms have amazing views, but there are a lot of other great looking hotels in Colmar - I do not feel as though I need to come back to this one.

Yelp
Lame, small, nothing happens as you hope it wil, and although we were in their biggest suite, there was never enough room for me to move around, except at the foot of the bed. I have been waiting nearly 30 minutes trying to check out. They brought down our luggage, but only half of it,and our luggage has perishables in it that need refrigeration. Some staff are quite good but the bad ones take it down a bigger notch than the good ones bring it up. It was awful noisy from road repairs nearby. A mechanized jackhammer tearing out stone pavement. Conveniently located to places we wanted to go, but the ancient edifice just cannot offer what a reasonable 21st century traveler requires. Lugging our luggage from the taxi to the entrance on arrival and in reverse on departure was ONEROUS. Not recommended.

Yelp
Wow, this is very likely the best hotel my husband and I have ever stayed at. This is an historic hotel with beautiful half-timbered features on the inside and outside of the building, yet the inside has been remodeled recently with completely modern features (and AC!). We checked in early and the staff was very accommodating, helpful, and friendly. The room was perfect with high-end amenities and comfortable bed. The location of the hotel is also perfect, as it is right in the center of everything yet set aside enough that we don't hear constant traffic or pedestrians. Finally, the breakfast-- get the breakfast. There was such a huge variety of delicious European foods (much of it local), that I wish I had the appetite to eat a sample of everything. We are so happy with our stay here and hope to come back again!

Yelp
Excellent dinner. All the food was very delicious, great presentation with excellent service. The one review I saw with one star obviously comes from a complete idiot.
