Le Pigonnet in Aix-en-Provence was recommended to me by the manager of Maison Armance, a charming hidden Espirit de France property in central Paris last Spring. This 100 year old recently renovated 5* expansive property located a short walk from the Aix city center was the perfect ending to a 2 week stay in the South of France with our family. My husband & I spent 3 glorious days relaxing at this oasis which includes expansive woodland, floral gardens, statuary, fountains, pergola, & countless chaise lounges scattered amongst the flower beds, tempting you to sit & relax. ||Our deluxe room included a balcony with small table & chairs overlooking the pool yet distant enough to not be disturbed by any noise. To the left the majestic Sainte-Victoire mountain of Cézanne fame rose, unobscured, a breathtaking sight we never tired of looking at. Our room was peaceful, our king-sized bed very comfortable with the quality linens you’d expect in a property of this caliber, the double sinked bathroom had separate toilet & rain shower rooms, complete with robes & slippers & exclusive Sonia Godet products in deep emerald green glass, elegant! A corner table & chairs offered us some room to place our belongings but more shelves or another flat surface, such as a wide narrow table under the television would have been helpful. ||As mentioned the back gardens were a haven from the relentless heat of 40C (> 100F) but so was the large pool with plenty of chaise lounge chairs & umbrellas. Two delightful attentive pool attendants, Tom & Raphael, made sure there were plenty of towels to go around as well as delivering ordered drinks & snacks. They seemed to take the oppressive heat in stride for I never saw anything except a smile on their faces as they catered to guests throughout the day. ||Does it get ANY better than to start your morning with a bountiful French breakfast outside overlooking gardens while listening to water fountains? A beautiful display of breakfast items was set up in a room adjacent to the outdoor patio. Any item you might possibly crave was waiting for you, displayed so beautifully it begged to be photographed. Locally sourced cheeses & meats, yoghurt, warm crusty breads with a variety of local jams & honey, croissants, pain au chocolat, ripe in season fruits such as deep orange apricots artistically displayed in ceramic bowls, figs, Cavaillon melon so juicy & flavorful you want to cry, in addition to eggs, omelettes, & any type coffee you’d prefer. I know I’ve not listed all there is on offer but I hope it paints a picture of the feast you’re in store for if you come to stay. Breakfast was a lingering affair, needless to say, but no one rushed you to start your day. AND, if you’re lucky you’ll be served by a lovely attentive woman named Amandine who lingers at your table making sure you’re thoroughly served before moving on to her next guest. ||Dinner can be a gastronomic event or a more casual one in the Les Amis bar which is where my husband & I chose to dine. This intimate cozy area served a varied delicious menu (highly recommended is the Croque) with an impressive bar selection, served by an attentive server named Nicolas. He introduced me to a delicious cocktail named “White Lady” made with my favorite St. Germain elderflower liquor. After a day of exploring or lounging by the pool it’s great to have dinner options of a leisurely meal without fuss. ||I wish I had time to take advantage of the beautiful spa attached to the hotel…next time!||First impressions are important & can color your stay in either direction. Having free parking on site was a very positive first impression. Attentive front desk staff who greeted you at your car to assist with luggage or packages throughout the day was so appreciative, especially when temperatures rose into the hundreds. If you’re fortunate to stay at Le Pigonnet maybe you’ll be extra fortunate to be assisted by a kind gentleman named Gaëtan who seemed to appear out of nowhere to help out even when you could manage without him. During our stay offers of iced tea & ice cream by Gaëtan were an unexpected treat. AND a lovely gesture on the part of the hotel. ||Throughout our stay we had conversations with the general manager, Olivier, in addition to Mekki, the manager who recommended Le Pigonnet from my stay in Paris.|It’s obvious management does not “hide away” in their office but rather interacts with staff & guests throughout the day. How nice it was to be greeted warmly wherever you were on the property, made to feel welcome & appreciated! ||It was serendipity to stay at the Maison Armance for the first time & to have Le Pigonnet recommended to me by the manager as he was unaware my family had a planned vacation for Provence this summer. How wonderful a stay we had & how everything worked out so well, thanks to his recommendation! Do yourself a favor & check out Le Pigonnet if you happen to be going to Aix. Have Nicolas make you a “White Lady” cocktail & order the Croque. You won’t be disappointed. Tell them Sue sent you.
