Yelp
Hôtel le Saint-Paul is a charming little hotel right along Rue Saint-Paul, and within easy walking distance from the train station, Old Québec, and lots of food. The staff was extremely nice and very helpful. The manager who checked me in gave me a map and drew out a route for me, and housekeeping put a bag next to my door with new towels, soaps, coffee, and toilet paper when I had my 'do not disturb' sign up -- LOVED THIS!
My room was on the small side, but had plenty of dresser space, a little desk, and an HDTV. The windows didn't open, but the air conditioning was excellent. It blows super cold, and right in the direction of the bed (presumably, the heat does the same). The free wi-fi was very fast compared to many hotels I've stayed at -- speed tested at 14ms, 21mbps down, 13mbps up.
The bathroom was recently renovated and had a tile floor, big sink, big tub (some rooms in their photos just have showers), modern Delta faucets with good water pressure, and great lighting. The beautiful renovations in the bathroom did not continue to the rest of the room, and what I presume to be hardwood floors was covered up with razor-thin and dirty carpet.
The view from my room wasn't all that impressive, but who cares? You're in Vieux-Québec and you should be out exploring! And, the ugly gas station across the street has a very nice selection of healthier drink options like coconut water and flavored water, for what it's worth. My room had a Keurig machine with a selection of regular, decaf, and green tea. But, I was a little disappointed that there wasn't mini fridge in the room.
The absolute worst part about my room was the bed. It was rock hard and creaked every time you shifted a little bit. I've stayed in a lot of hotels, and I can only think of one time I've experienced a bed as terrible as this - a little old hotel in a pub town in Ireland. It was awful, to say the least. Luckily, the huge bathtub and very nice selection of natural/organic soaps made up for it. Still, my back was in so much pain on my train ride back to Montréal.
I have one other gripe, and that's the inconvenience and lack of security that comes with what appeared to be standard metal residential keys for the room doors. Modern electronic hotel room locks eliminate virtually any chance of a room being burglarized by a former guest since old keys are automatically invalidated; and it's not a big deal if you lose your key because you can just get a new one issued. I didn't have my car with me, so I left my keys in my suitcase, so now I had to worry about carrying around a metal key. Along with that, I really had to pull to get my door to click locked while leaving, and there was no in-room safe, something I only care about when there's no electronic door locks.
Ultimately, I can list off tons of reasons I'd absolutely LOVE to stay at this hotel again -- awesome location, staff, internet, and bathroom -- but I wouldn't do so without the hotel investing in better beds and better security.
