8 Hotels That Are Much Less Expensive Than You'd Think - AFAR

"A recently renovated, 74-room beachfront hotel on Bora Bora that serves as a more affordable alternative to overwater luxury properties; it offers classic palm-fringed white sand and vivid lagoon waters, two on-site restaurants serving local dishes like poisson cru, and easy access to the nearby village for authentic local interaction." - Mark Ellwood

Had a great stay. I had one night to burn before I checked into the St Regis and I decided to stay the night at the Maitai Polynesia. I think it was an excellent choice for my purpose. The price was great for what I got. I was perfectly happy in the main hotel building. The room was basic but that's all I needed and expected since the St Regis would spoil me. The staff was friendly from check in to check out. The hotel's beach was the star of the show for us. They have a private coral garden and we enjoyed hours of swimming around. There were very few people around in February so we basically had the beach all to ourselves. The hotel provided towels and snorkels, which was nice. We didn't have any meals at the hotel so I cannot comment on the food. All-in-all it was quite a memorable stay. Sorry, I didn't take many photos of the hotel, but I have some of the coral garden.

We received a very warm welcome at this hotel. Staff were friendly and very informative. ||Good location but small beach area (with limited sunbeds) which is problematic given the size of the hotel.||Breakfasts were basic but ok. Bad reviews of the hotel restaurant meant we never ate dinner there. However, the restaurant on the beach, opposite the hotel, was very good.||The room was clean but a little tired and had a bi-fold hatch between the bedroom and the bathroom which refused to stay shut leaving little to the imagination!! Baffling, very odd and pointless.||We had lunch on the balcony one day and shut the doors to keep the room cold , and we got locked out! No way of opening doors from outside! Good job we were on the ground floor and my husband could climb over the railing (and he had the key in his pocket) so all was well. But could have been worse given we were at the back of the hotel reception with no foot traffic! ||The Tahitian dancers were brilliant. ||The gift shop at the hotel was excellent and a fraction of the prices elsewhere. Well worth a browse.

My wife surprised me with a 50th trip to polynesia and then upgraded us to a overwater bungalow- wow! the most colourful fish await in the eco-planted coral just below the bungalow in the clear warm water- how I loved everyday waking up and jumping in the lagoon facing what is left of the sofitel island in the distance after covid dessimated its trade. The room was big and airy- just watch those mosquitos as for nights on end I was murdering multiple of them- they are there for rainy season and live somewhere in the roof stuffing? ||The room looks great but the tv is a gimmick as the internet doesnt reach to the bungalows- unsure why they havent resolved this otherwise why have tvs at all! The bathroom and shower are nice and the floor window echoes more expensive resorts but not much to see- they need to develop the coral more, put more windows in then charge a fortune!||Our first night we had a tahitian cultural night- the food and dancing were epic and the price reasonable we felt. The breakfast was ok, but very samey each day- surprising given the cost of this resort and what they can provide when you pay a lot. If you like animals there are many at breakfast begging for food, we didnt mind, but some might. The room service was good and the service at breakfast ok. We didnt understand why if you pay more for an overwater bungalow, why then cant the restaurant nearest be used for breakfast for those guests, with sea views- this felt like another oversight for this hotel.||In many ways the hotel benefits from the amazing water views, lagoon and private beach, but feels quite separate to it and doesnt seem to know how to monopolise what they have-maybe they want to keep prices lower and give just enough elements of more upscale resorts- we were grateful for this. The main hotel itself feels a step behind though all the same and for our time there it felt like we were staying in a separate place. Amazing though for Bora Bora, where everything is upscale and exclusive...

It's very average. If you come all the way to Bora-Bora from far away, and think you'll save money by booking there for an over water bungalow, don't do it. They're very average and far from everything you may have in mind. Location of the hotel is good, but breakfast is god awful and the other regular rooms are beyond basic, some with mold. Staff is nice but this is just an ok place if you're here "on a budget". I would not recommend. If you can swing it, for an over water bungalow experience here on Bora-Bora, I'd recommend Four Seasons, or the other usual suspects (St. Regis, Westin).

Good hotel with great location. + the hotel is 7-8 minutes walking distance from the Matira beach (the main beach in mainland Bora Bora and the only public one) + you can find a bunch of restaurants in walking distance and a supermarket + spacious room + if you like the traditional flower crowns, you can order one at the reception. They are lovely and make for great picture props 😁 - the hotel rooms are very close to the main street and it can be noisy

We stayed in the over water bungalow's during our stay. Worth the expense, and all 5 couples upgraded to this level. I am glad we upgraded, it would have been unfortunate if we stayed on the opposite side of the road away from the water. The upgrade was worth it. Rooms were very clean, and well laid out. |We had the half board meal plan. The main dining room was ok for breakfast, but we always chose the Beach Restaurant for dinner because the food choices were plentiful. The dinners at the main restaurant were good, but limited choices. |The grounds were very well kept , but the beach and sun area was limited.|We all enjoyed the stay and would return if we ever chose to go back to Bora Bora.

This hotel is one the main island in an excellent position to take advantage of Matira Beach which is the best on the island. The hotel doesn't have a pool but it has a shallow bay to swim with a small beach and sun loungers. The staff are all friendly and professional. Patrice was particularly helpful and kind. They don't have many options for gluten-free meals but otherwise the food was good and plentiful. There were several local restaurants and bars within 10 minutes walk and the hotel organised daily trips to the capital Vaitape for shopping etc.

Hotel Maitai is not the Intercontinental, but the experience, comfort and luxury for the price, locality, service is amazing. It all depends on what your needs are for a holiday, so do your research. We had an awesome time here. I will do this again definitely.
