The Sustainable Hotel Marcel in Connecticut Reviewed - AFAR

"Set in a retrofitted 1950s brutalist office building by Marcel Breuer, this 165-room property has been touted as the country’s first net-zero hotel while awaiting formal certification. Its sustainability strategy centers on on-site renewable generation—large solar canopies over the parking lot supply about two-thirds of the hotel’s electricity (with a planned expansion to push generation above 80%), rooftop panels provide most of the remainder, and a room of battery racks on a guest floor stores extra power; the property can also sell excess electricity back to the grid. Energy demand has been cut through triple-glazed windows, all-electric systems (heat pumps, electric clothes dryers, and an all-electric kitchen), regenerative braking in the elevators, and other efficiency measures; the kitchen is deliberately developing a lower-carbon menu that reduces reliance on fryers. Guest-focused amenities to support low-carbon travel include 12 Tesla Superchargers, five level-2 dual chargers, and an electric shuttle to local transit hubs and attractions, while historic-preservation specifications were followed to retain the building’s original facade and qualify for incentives. Project leaders emphasize that net-zero is a dynamic target that requires ongoing measurement and model recalibration based on occupancy and guest behavior, with contingency plans to add more solar if needed, and they say these sustainability features were implemented without sacrificing guest comfort or control over room systems; at least one guest reported the property’s net-zero status influenced their booking decision." - Bridget Reed Morawski

Hotel Marcel is the best hotel I have ever had the pleasure of experiencing and I have stayed at several places domestic and international. The service and staff are beyond exceptional. I gave not ever met such a wonderful group of people. The room and view was amazing. The only challenge was my daughter is in a wheelchair and the space near the beds were narrow. But that will not stop me from coming back everytime I am in CT! The restaurant is also fantastic. I enjoyed my food and the staff was wonderful!!! Thank you Hotel Marcel for such a wonderful experience!!!

Google
Great room experience, but room service itself is difficult to deal with. I had some issues with getting our room serviced despite time frames we had arranged for the room, so we could only get towels supplemented but not fully replaced until our next availability. The front desk people are great and extremely helpful and VERY accommodating for folks who may have special needs. If you intend to eat at BLDG, the appetizers are very textured, but tastes very well. Salad was a hit miss as it was very acidic, but it worked with the dressing and salmon. You can clearly tell the chef had made seasonal produce shine throughout the meal and celebrated it's freshness. But know the atmosphere is not great for talking. It's easy to overhear other conversations near the bar and it's hard to talk amongst yourself.

We spent two nights in this hotel and really enjoyed everything about it. Firstly, what a cool building! The outside hides a beautiful, clean, elegantly decorated, calm interior. The welcome we received was warm, friendly and helpful. Huge rooms that are spotlessly clean and well appointed. We were worried about road noise from past reviews but honestly, we couldn’t hear a thing! The bar and restaurant are great with really friendly staff and tasty, reasonably priced food. Also, great complimentary water machines. Loved the sparkling water option!

I recently had the pleasure of staying at the Hotel Marcel in New Haven, and I was thoroughly impressed. This unassuming hotel boasts a unique industrial exterior that gives way to a sleek, modern interior design blending classic and wood elements beautifully. Location is great. The staff, particularly Luis Rivera at the front desk, were exceptional. Luis's professionalism and efficiency made my stay seamless and enjoyable. One aspect that stood out to me was the hotel's emphasis on security. I appreciated the fact that only room key cards grant access to the elevator and floor, providing an added layer of safety and security. The rooms themselves were equipped with some impressive features, such as motorized window shades that operate in unison – a cool touch! The bed was comfortable, and I slept well. Cleanliness was top-notch throughout the hotel. There was no iron in the room, but instead a steamer, which I wasn't comfortable with. I'm sure if requested an iron would have been provided but I pushed through trying to familiarize myself with something different. Minor issue. The bathroom was a highlight, with nice touches like slow-closing toilet lids. However, the toilet paper was a bit thin – a higher-end hotel might consider upgrading to a plushier option. Overall, my stay at the Hotel Marcel was excellent. The unique design, exceptional staff, and emphasis on security make it a great choice for travelers. I'd definitely recommend it to others.

First time in Connecticut and I couldn’t be more happy and proud of how I was received at the Marcel hotel FIRST environmentally friendly, kind hearted individuals and primarily because I had the best dinner referred by the server and hostess of this little cute restaurant inside the hotel. Miss Natalia, she is marvelous, not only that she was kind and adorable, super professional and respectful. she was so polite and she understood that I have an accent. So She made such a great effort to make me feel comfortable. It was amazing to speak to somebody in my own language, and know that I am being respected in this hotel. I am very glad they are respectful to all costumers, I am thrilled and I loved every bit of it, especially because Natalia, she made it extremely special.

This hotel is efficiently designed, well-priced, comfortable and conveniently-located. I would highly recommend it! I love the iconic Brutalist building, and the hotel rooms are very cozy, quiet, and soft-lit because of the architecture and design. The restaurant is also excellent. It is only an added bonus that this is the most environmentally-friendly hotel in the country.

Hotel Marcel is truly one of a kind. From the moment you arrive, the staff goes above and beyond—they’re simply the best. Chef Megan’s food is outstanding—every dish is thoughtful, fresh, and full of flavor. I also deeply appreciate their commitment to sustainability—it’s refreshing to see a hotel so environmentally conscious. As someone originally from the area, I can confidently say it’s the only place I’ll stay when I visit. Highly recommended!

Yelp
We had an awesome stay here. A lot to say, but in short the beds are comfy, the hotel is a good location (near the water and highway), parking is free and the service was excellent! Need to shout out Brianna in particular for OUTSTANDING service giving us extra assistance with directions and suggestions, etc. Also very noteworthy is this hotel is very environmental-it's powered completely by solar (double check but I'm 99% confident) and it didn't affect us at all. It's a quick ride/Uber to Yale and downtown proper but it's very close. Oh they do have a couple of bikes they lend out... Very cool place and I can't wait to come back!!!

Yelp
Drove down from upstate NY with my teenage daughter for a sports event and ended up here, as the other Hilton closer to the venue was booked out. I love that they are solar-powered. They accommodated my request for a higher floor (shoutout to the front desk). We landed on the 7th of 9 floors -- which felt promising, until I realized Lead Foot Larry was living his best life directly above us until midnight. It was fine, though. The room had that whole "mid-century modern meets Swedish divorcee" vibe -- very clean lines, very IKEA-next-door adjacent (which honestly kind of made sense). It was narrow like a little galley kitchen, but I don't mind a cozy minimalist moment. Beds were firm but comfy, pillows were fluffy, and zero bedbugs according to my flashlight detective work -- which is more than I can say for some of the places I've stayed. There were a couple of suspicious stains on the sheets, but at this point in life, I just remove the top blanket and realize hotels don't wash those out of principle. The shower was giving... gentle drizzle vibes -- not exactly the hot, high-pressure cleanse a tired sports mom dreams of after a long drive. And the soap was the kind that makes you feel both clean and slightly drier than the Sahara at the same time. Nothing fancy! Overall -- slept good, didn't cry, no bedbugs! If you're into sustainable hotels and appreciate the vibe more than the amenities, this might be your place. If you're just a mom trying to survive youth sports weekends... maybe try somewhere with hotter water and thicker sheets

Yelp
We stayed at the Hotel Marcel for a couple of nights. Located in a former office building, it's amazing how nicely they transformed the space into a welcoming hotel. The lobby was beautiful, and everything still felt new. The room was on the smaller side with less furniture than your average hotel room (no extra chairs or couches, just the beds and a very small desk area), but was one of the cleanest hotel rooms I've ever stayed in (not a stray crumb or clumps of dust anywhere). We chose this hotel for a few different reasons - sustainability (an all-electric hotel), convenient location (right off I-95), and reasonable prices, including free parking (shared lot with IKEA) and access to a free, all-electric shuttle that would take you anywhere within a certain radius of the hotel. Unfortunately, we happened to be there on days the shuttle wasn't running, but the person working at reception was very helpful with pointing us in the direction of affordable parking lots downtown. Overall, I do wish the rooms were a little bigger with an extra chair or two, but this was still a great stay.

Yelp
We stayed at Hotel Marcel New Haven on 10/3/2024 and were impressed by the modern, clean design and attentive staff. The public areas were spotless, and check-in was quick with only a 5-minute wait. Our room on the 5th floor had a great harbor view, and the bed was extremely comfortable with modern amenities, including a large TV and an electronic system for controlling the lights and climate. Unfortunately, the stay was ruined by the room's cooling system. The thermostat wouldn't go below 67°F, which would have been fine, but it wasn't accurate--it felt much warmer than 67°F in the room. After calling the front desk twice (at 10 PM and 2:30 AM), maintenance remotely reset the thermostat, but it didn't fix the issue. The temperature felt at least 72°F, which made it impossible for me to sleep. For the price of the room, guests should be able to adjust the temperature to their comfort. I wouldn't return unless this issue is resolved.

Yelp
Came here for a quick over night trip and decided to stay another night. We spoke to Brianna at the front desk, and she said we could stay another night but had to change rooms. Turns out, we only had to move to the next room over and it was fabulous! We had a corner king bed room with a living room, table and chairs, and an amazing bathroom with a round Japanese style bathtub!! Loved the automatic shades and the modern decor. Tried out the electric kettle and steeped my own coffee and loved it as well. The bed is so comfy and the shower is huge! Our first evening here, we met Stacey the bartender. She was friendly, made great drinks and also filled us in on all the best pizza places in town. This hotel also has a free shuttle that we were able to use one evening to go to dinner, instead of driving. We also tried out the restaurant for breakfast one morning. The breakfast sandwich was good and I loved the crispy bacon and the potatoes. The pecan roll - yum! The omelet with sausage was good and so was the coffee. The service here was very slow, but they look under staffed and only one server was working. Our server was sweet and friendly, and apologized for the wait. This hotel is in a great location with terrific water views, plenty of parking and absolutely loved the modern decor and friendly staff. There is a huge IKEA next store that I was able to explore and def got my steps in! We love this Hilton property, and will be staying here again when back in town!

Yelp
Checked in on a Sunday. Free parking. Service was friendly and gave me a tap card to access elevator and room. Room was clean and spacious. Bed was good. Shower worked well warm water came quick. It was cool you could control lights and temperature with digital panel near door. At some point the AC was too cold but I call downstairs and they turned it off without even coming up which is cool. Overall, nice and comfortable stay recommended!

Yelp
Booked a single night here as we had a show to attend in New Haven. Everything went nice and smooth with the use of the Hilton App. Check in to check out was simple. The room was nice and clean. Would stay here again.

Yelp
I stayed at this hotel for 9 nights. While most of my stay was adequate, I have significant concerns regarding cleanliness and safety. On my fourth night, I found a large ant in my bed late at night. I was staying on one of the top floors, so this seemed unusual. I contacted the front desk, and they sent housekeeping to change the sheets and clean the room. Despite their efforts, I also did my own cleaning afterward, assuming this was just an isolated incident. However, on the last day of my stay, I noticed some itching on my ankles but didn't think much of it at the time. Later that evening, as I was getting ready for bed, I found a flea in my bed. It was actively jumping around, which was both disturbing and disgusting. I called the front desk again, extremely frustrated by now after experiencing two separate bug-related incidents. They offered to move me to a room next to mine, but I declined because I no longer trusted their cleaning protocols and especially didn't feel safe staying on that floor. I ended up staying with family members who were on a different floor and had not encountered any bug issues. Despite the multiple concerns, the front desk staff refused to offer any discount for my stay, even though I now have to take precautions to protect my belongings and home from a potential flea infestation. Additionally, there were several events at the hotel during my stay that impacted parking and brought in a lot of random guests. One incident that particularly raised safety concerns happened when a member of my party was heading to my room, a few floors above hers. She entered an elevator with a man who was already inside, but no floor button was pressed. She pressed my floor, but when the elevator reached her floor, the man didn't get out. Feeling uncomfortable, she decided not to get off at my floor and instead pressed the button to return to the lobby. The man then asked her why she wasn't getting off, which was a very unsettling question. Although it might have been harmless, the entire situation felt off, especially with so many unfamiliar people moving through the hotel due to the ongoing events. Overall, I will never stay here again and highly recommend that others avoid this hotel as well.

Yelp
This is a very interesting hotel. The building used to belong to a tire company? It was converted into a boutique hotel. The rooms are on the outside of the building and in the middle of the building. I got a middle room. You face the room on the other side of the building. Weird but once I got into the room, it all made sense. These rooms are super quiet. The room setup is very cute. Everything is controlled via a panel on the wall. My room was quite large. Double beds with a living room. Like a studio. Large TV. Big bathroom. Nice shower. Fantastic towels. Great beds. This is a nice hotel. Not like your average hotel. The staff was super nice and very helpful. I will be staying here again when in New Haven.

Yelp
As someone in the design field, I was excited to stay here and was not disappointed. The common spaces and our room were all beautifully decorated and provided a comfortable place to relax. We only stayed one night so we didn't need too much space for our travel backpacks, but I can imagine that those with larger suitcases might feel a little cramped. The front desk employees were friendly and helpful, providing us an umbrella as well as toothpaste upon request. I would definitely return in the future!

Yelp
I hate hotels. I hate them. Maybe it's from watching too many movies like The Shining or Barton Fink. I hate the detergents they use on the sheets and towels. I hate the bedspreads. I hate the little mini soaps. I hate the uniformity of the experience, and generally feeling like a head of cattle as opposed to a human being. That said, I loved Hotel Marcel. Maybe it has something to do with it not starting out as a hotel? The space is beautiful, but not in a hotel kind of way. A traditionally beautiful hotel knows it is beautiful. It tries too hard to be either elegant or modern. Hotel Marcel is unapologetically Brutalist, and it's divine. Even the stairwells. Maybe especially the stairwells. We stayed in one of the deluxe double queen bed rooms, which was a great call. The little bit of extra space added a tremendous amount of comfort. And I loved the windows that looked out over the water. The sunrise was gorgeous. The very best thing though was undoubtedly the staff. Wow! Every single person I spoke to was helpful, attentive, polite, gracious, and caring. There was a little snafu upon check in, but Brian took care of everything and really went the extra mile to make sure getting into our new room would be easy and effortless. After a few days on the road I cannot even begin to tell you how much that meant to me. Yes, the location may not be super central to the action by Yale's campus, but it is very close to the Long Wharf taco trucks. For me, that's even better than being next door to IKEA. I also very much appreciate the free and abundant parking. I should also note that everything in the room and the hotel in general was impeccably clean and well maintained. I'm a bit of a stickler for that kind of stuff and tend to notice small details. You might call me a little fussy. Looking forward to many future stays!

Yelp
It was a pleasure to play travel guide to some childhood friends of my parents. They chose the Hotel Marcel because of its unusual architecture. It used to be the landmark Pirelli building designed by Marcel Breuer. The hotel is also eco-friendly utilizing solar electricity to power the entire building. Hopefully they will be able to get a good night's sleep in spite of the proximity to the busy I-95 trucks and traffic. The clean and modern minimalist guest rooms and suites offer serenity along with waterfront and city skyline views. The staff was welcoming, friendly and helpful. The lobby is completely updated and aesthetically quite interesting. There is also plenty of parking nearby.

Yelp
Overall this was a fine hotel. What I liked most about it was the building it is housed in is one of the most iconic examples of Brutalist architecture. It was to be torn down but it was saved by be put on the National Historic Register and sat vacant for years until it was re-purposed. Had a very European feel to it. Also, one of the most energy efficient buildings in CT.

Yelp
We spent 3 nights at Marcel and definitely one of the best hotels we've stayed out recently. Staff is incredibly accommodating and helpful, room and hotel itself was clean and modern, and the entire place is powered with solar! Stayed in one of the ADA rooms as my wife is in a wheelchair and she has plenty of space to move around and get to where she needed to be. Bed was a little lower for her but would probably be great for people with different t conditions. There was always plenty of parking in the handicap section right out front so that was a pleasure, along with it being so close to 95 and downtown didnt take long to get anywhere we wanted to be. If we ever find our way back to New Haven I know we'll be back!

Yelp
Clean and nice. Convenient to Little Italy neighborhood and Yale University. The front desk staff was very casual but not exactly what I would have expected as a Hilton Honors member. Not a bad experience. Not a great experience.

Yelp
Beautiful hotel. First class service. Clean, modern, comfortable rooms. Good fitness center (TV doesn't work). One of the rooms shades was stuck in the down position. I called the front desk and in less than five minutes somebody came up, knocked at the door and repaired the shade quickly Regarding breakfast, I ordered the eggs over easy with bacon, salad, and muffin. All were good. The eggs did not come over easy... bummer, over fried. Super friendly breakfast staff treat you first class with an attentive staff.

Yelp
Brand new hotel but very nice and modern. Good location as well, right off of the highway and plenty of places close by. They share a parking lot with IKEA and they have covered parking as well. Large lobby with conference rooms and plenty of lobby seating. There's a restaurant and bar and a small snack shop as well. The rooms are a little small but comfortable. Modern with touch screen lights. Nice gym here as well. The staff here is very nice and accommodating. Definitely staying here again when I'm back in the area.

Yelp
Clean. Modern. Central. It is a rare opportunity to stay in newly-opened boutique hotel, even more so a recently remastered masterpiece of Brutalist architecture formerly known as New Haven's Pirelli/Armstrong Building, itself a two-time #DonnaSummerDemolition Survivor: first as a near victim of IKEA's 2003 plans to demo it's entire lower levels for parking (they destroyed most of the lower R&D wing, but kept the part under the floating upper offices) and the second from two decades of sitting vacant, aka "demolition by neglect." Thankfully what remains of the Marcel Breuer's original bold vision has now been renovated and reimagined by area architect Bruce Becker in partnership with NY-based Dutch East Design as the country's first net zero hotel. A modern marvel of design + innovation: modern solar panels on roof and parking lot fueling clean energy, in tandem with Breuer's bold pre-cast concrete panels offering both shade/glare protection and unique 3D visual tension when viewed from different angles. Net zero means this modern marvel produces as much energy as it uses: an incredible balancing act unimaginable to past generations and a living template for future building design/renovation for generations to come. Listed on both the National Register of Historic Places and Business Insider's list of the ugliest buildings in CT by less artistically/historically aware locals, the Marcel/Pirelli building design creates an ideal hotel: hotel rooms "floating" above two stories of negative space, far away from busy lobby/meeting/restaurant spaces downstairs. Both artistic and functional, Breuer's original design was a merger of two buildings needed by the Armstrong Company: one a noisy R&D tire lab (think: race car drivers on bottom floors) plus a modern, midcentury white collar executive office space (think: Mad Men on upper/floating floors). Let's be honest, if it helped the top suits avoid distraction from the rabid race car drivers downstairs, it will likely work just fine for you in getting a good night's sleep! Combining both of these spaces in a single, separated structure was born of a unique nexus of demands: Armstrong Corporation's Joseph Stewart's logistical interest in space at the intersection of I-91/95 to relocate their West Haven labs and former New Haven Mayor Richard Lee (a huge fanboy of the Modernism movement) who demanded that such a gateway project be designed by a master architect, ultimately costing an impressive $7 million price tag. All that history and context to say that the Becker + DED's modern reimagining has truly created the ideal hotel space: one capable of restoring both a monument to a bold era in architecture's history, but also paying homage to an era often romanticized, but rarely realized: a postmodern masterpiece that's both artistic and functional. While this initial stay was slightly soured by smart lighting that could not actually turn off completely for a good night's sleep, the rest of the room and space are both subtle and impressive. Motion-sensor warm lighting in the bathrooms fade in as your room door opens and lighting/window "scenes" in both main sleeping space and the bathroom provide one-touch convenience in finding the ideal mood. The hotel is also run by a staff who seem ever on their A-game: : staying late at the bar for just a few customers, comping the next morning's breakfast for the trouble of not-so-smart lighting, and checking in on meals and one's stay throughout even a short one-night booking. Even the lobby smells Westin-pleasant, not Sheraton-class olfactory-overwhelming. An undoubtedly intentional smell of some pleasant flowers/scents versus the equivalent too many hotels seek of an Xlerator hand dryer blasting 55mph hot/cold air on you as you come out of the rotary door and are just trying get your bearings without participating in an involuntary aerodynamics test. Don't like the great breakfast options? Walk across the street to the #AlmostDestroyerOfBuilding's neighboring IKEA, buy some cardboard furniture, and further appreciate the contrast of the great staff and service of the Marcel with the passive aggressive yellow jacket staff of the IKEA perpetually upset to have you in their space and yelling at you after waiting 30m in the wrong checkout line... instead of simply opening another checkout register themselves. That's POstmodernism folks, just without the "st." If you made it this far, congratulations! Now go make a donation to your local historical preservation group so more amazing spaces like this can #DonnaSummerSurvive enough short-sighted efforts at their destruction to enable more enlightened present/future architects to see their potential and build on their foundations to produce yet another bold generation of places and spaces that don't require us destroy out past to build our future.

Yelp
This was a great hotel option for New Haven! It's a bit weird because you are in the parking lot for IKEA, but the interior is great! The rooms are all really nicely decorated and it was great to have the integrated control panel. The common space in the hotel is really nice--good gym with pelotons and a nice area in the lobby. I didn't have a chance to check out the dining options. It's convenient to downtown and Wooster square but probably not walkable.

Yelp
Came to New Haven for a Yale reunion and opted to stay at Hotel Marcel because of its historic presence...thanks in part to the owner, architect and visionary who saved the building from demolition. Masterfully done, the Bauhaus vibe and attention to detail throughout creates the feel of sleeping in a museum. The rooms with their nod to Mid-Century Modern are all electric 'LEED' certified, cozy, quiet and spacious...for lack of unnecessary furnishings. Fitness room is more like a mirrored closet but it's there. There IS a Café - the BLDG Café which IS a Café avec bar. Somebody serious tends to the urbane farm to table variety served with excellent coffee and wine selections. Breakfast boasted Huevos Rancheros (Caliente) a nod to the food trucks just west in front of the massive Swedish neighbor - IKEA. IF available - they do offer a complimentary Local Shuttle which was MIA for the three days of our stay. We'll be back.

Yelp
Terrible hotel. The rooms are run with electronics (AC, lights, shades) and despite the weather being 90+ degrees out, the temp kept resetting to heat/78 degrees. The beds are uncomfortable. There's not enough elevators and no one picks up calls at the front desk. No ice machine (Unless you convince the resteraunt to give you their's). The resteraunt gets overwhelmed if there's more than 6 tables and ran out of 1/2 their entrees/desserts every night.

Paul M.

Yelp
Hotel looks way better inside than the outside the outside looks pretty drab but when we got inside the room was all high tech and push button. Everything is very clean. Neat as was all the common areas we just went to stay for a fun night away and went to the flea market the next day and to do the pizza crawl.

Yelp
What an amazing place. We needed to stay near I95 because of the usual, being tired, early getaway but also had some interest in this unusual beast of a hotel. It's fantastic. The best part was being greeted by Brian (Bryan?) I hope I got that right.... (he used to work in FL....) Somehow I put in the wrong date when I reserved online and we had no reservation. He worked quickly to find us a room and also gave us a very good rate (Thank you Brian!). It's extremely clean, the rooms are very modern, couldn't find a refrigerator, it was tucked into a sleek cupboard near the bathroom. Beds are extremely comfortable. Good shower. It's not cozy but the cleanliness made up for that. The electric shades that come down are cool. We took dinner up to our room as it was empty and wow, amazing kale ceasar, delicious chicken wings (really delicious). This is one cool hotel. And I like you can walk through IKEA next door. Nice place!

Yelp
I know what this hotel is trying to do, but it simply is not for me. I know it is a fairly new hotel, but it still has a lot of kinks to iron out. The features are inconsistent, the pillows are lumpier than coal, the beds are okay. At least the bathrooms are clean and the use of making your room dark at night make it somewhat easy to sleep. The lack of an alarm clock and a comfortable pillow change that. I know it is eco-friendly, but at least make it easy to turn on and off the lights. I had to get a room change because one of the lights by my nightstand was broken! I know it is not near downtown, but it is not really near ANYTHING save for an IKEA. I know that Hilton prides itself on good customer service, but the front desk here is curt and unfriendly. Like they did not appreciate when I made them work. Would it kill them to smile a little? I know this selection does not include a free breakfast, but I am a Hilton Honors Gold Member and I get a breakfast credit each morning. The breakfast is expensive and honestly, not very good. Just a lot of fair food. I know I will not be returning here so fast. Maybe for a night or two, but nothing more.

Yelp
I wasn't going to write a review because they have plenty of good ones, but the Marcel is a really gorgeous hotel and I'm glad I ended up choosing it even though I didn't know its history going in. First of all, the design preserves the interesting background of the building, and it is the first "fossil fuel-free" (all-electric, solar powered) hospitality property in the US. What does all that mean? Here is an article about it: https://www.vogue.com/article/hotel-marcel-new-haven The room was immaculate and I got amazing sleep here, everything is as new and as thoughtfully done as could be. I also had occasion to interact with lots of different staff at both the front desk and the restaurant and everyone I met was exceptionally nice and friendly. The surprising parts other people have mentioned where the location is a bit unusual (in the Ikea parking lot) and the super modern control panel on the wall for everything (lighting, shades, temperature) took some getting used to, but the aesthetics and comfort of this hotel are top-notch. I felt very safe and well taken care of, I would stay here again.

Yelp
The place is clean and the employees are helpful and polite. The room was clean. The walls were a bit thin, I couldn't make out conversations, but I could hear coughing. The absolute worst are the smoke detectors in the room. They strobe a white light twice every 10 seconds. So, try sleeping with that flickering down on your face.

Yelp
I absolutely love this hotel. The room, customer service, cleanliness, view from room and everyone that works there. I would never stay anywhere else when traveling to Ct. I came to Ct. and had to work in Hartford. I was willing and happy to take the drive everyday just to stay at Hotel Marcel. I hate traveling for work but staying here makes it all the better

Yelp
Amazing boutique style hotel. All staff is friendly, helpful & wanting the guests to enjoy their stay. Rooms are exceptionally clean and comfortable, high tech and fresh. The restaurant is constantly excellent as well. Highly recommend!

Yelp
The hotel Marcel is located in a rather remote area right off a highway next to an IKEA. It is not a place to go if you want to be in the center of town. There's not much to walk to here. But once you walk inside you'll be thrilled with its clean and sleek modern interior. There's a restaurant to your left and a beautiful seating area to the right. The front desk was very friendly and accommodating. The room itself had a lot of smart features which were a lot of fun to operate using switches and buttons on the side of the bed. We opened and closed the shades, the black out curtains, and altered the temperature to our liking. They were wonderful lighting opportunities to explore here. The bed was especially comfortable and it pillows were first rate. The bathroom and room were clean and tidy. We had one of our best night sleep in many days! My only concern was the parking outside the hotel. It was right off of a highway so I had some concerns about the safety of the vehicles. There is no garage and I didn't see any security. That said, we did not have any problems. We would definitely return the next time we are in New Haven.

Yelp
Hotel service is Meh ok but BLDG brunch was . Had best frittata I've ever had with a mixed greens salad tossed in lemon. Food was amazing. Service not so much. And hotel front desk person sat there barely looking at us when we checked in and told us our room wasn't ready. We explained we had 50th surprise birthday party to go to an hour away and needed place to change our clothes. She just said well room isn't ready and offered no options. We almost left right then. Food was only bright spot of our stay

Yelp
Great place Walking distance to the harbor food trucks ( a million of them), a long walk to Pepe's pizza and ikea Swedish meatballs are next door . Gastronomic heaven Upscale bar with a few local beers and fofo drinks, indigo something and your choice of lavender or rose peddles Very modern vibe High tech room, automatic curtains, entry touch pad for lighting cooling shade control Prices vary greatly with the day of the week Free parking and Wi-Fi

Yelp
I'm so glad this building is being put to use. This historic architecture has a fascinating history and the current interior design is well done. There were some technical details that needed to be ironed out, specifically regarding the climate control in the rooms. Also, it was hard to find plugs, but it turns out they are under and along the sides of the bed. The staff was great. All very helpful and friendly. New Haven also has a lot to offer and it was fun being right next to IKEA. I would definitely recommend this hotel.

Yelp
They told us at check in here that it's the only completely solar powered hotel in the country. The building it top notch. In an old office building but only 5 months old and everything is brand new. Huge lobby and the staff were super helpful and pleasant. Dining options are aplenty just a mile down the road on State St by Yale. TV in the room is huge and the bathrooms are excellent size. We're glad we stayed here.

Yelp
Hotel is ok, clean and upscale. But avoid the restaurant. I attempted 2 meals in this pretentious void, and both were pathetic. Arugula salad with so much dressing on it it could have been a smoothie. I ate at the bar, had 3 bites, and set it aside, no one asked why I wasn't eating it. I appreciate that there are many vegetarians, vegans, and gluten challenged people, but don't make your menu 85% for them. The majority of people still want some pre woke options. Breakfast was even worse, how do you make bad scrambled eggs, serve dry white toast without providing, or for thet matter, offering butter or jelly. The answer to the question is...have Breakfast at the Marcel.

Yelp
This hotel is a scam!!!! They will charge you for smoking even if you don't smoke!!!! They literally charged me $161 in front of my face for the night , than when I checked out my receipt said $184 and I said okay no big deal! But when I got home and checked my bank account I had a $500 charge for smoking and I have chronic asthma!!!!!! I called them and spoke with the manager Patrice and she said they had proof of smoking because the room smelled like marijuana. I explained that my husband is a smoker but they should have him on camera walking out the building and smoking outside and she stated that the charge was valid because of the supposed smell. I would absolutely not recommend this hotel not just because of this scam but also because for $500 no breakfast, no water nothing but a extremely small mini fridge. It's a scam!!!!!

Yelp
Gorgeous, gorgeous use of a striking building that was thankfully not taken down by IKEA during its early years -- we as guests are grateful and lucky to take advantage of it as a multi-use space! The staff was hospitable to a familial degree on a holiday evening and was incredibly indulgent in granting us a tour of some of the architectural features of the building. The food was outstanding, the drinks clever and innovative, and the rooms gorgeous. Really pleased to see this building coming so far and becoming an institution and hopefully, a tradition for us and many others for years to come. Sincere thanks to everyone who loved us this week!

Yelp
This turned out to be a great stay for us! It is an architectural landmark for New Haven that sat vacant for decades after a tire company headquarters moved out in 1988. It was reopened two years ago as Hotel Marcel. The rooms and hotel were beautifully decorated and in pristine condition. We had an excellent night's sleep. I was able to make the room as cool as I wanted - some hotels don't let me go below 68. The staff was courteous and helpful. The pricepoint was very inexpensive and parking is free.

Yelp
I love this place! gorgeous interiors. staff is courteous. I love thé isolation of the location but it's also close to Yale by Uber.

Yelp
Reason enough to visit New Haven. Stunning restoration of this landmark, with beautiful furnishings, great technology, and utter quiet. Gracious service, convenient parking, all right in New Haven close to Wooster Square. A gem. Leaving NYC for a New England trip? Plan a stopover in New Haven - swanky hotel, great pizza, maybe even a gallery or some shopping. This city has improved dramatically over the past few decades, and the Marcel is a great symbol of just how much things have changed.

Yelp
Really nice hotel. I liked the design and the interior was cool. It had a control panel in the room that changed the lights/temperature and I thought it was very innovative.

Yelp
Amazing setting in an icon of modern architecture! I was so excited to stay at this hotel - the transformation of Breuer's Pirelli Building is so well done. Great room - large windows with a view to the water, cool light/shade controls and a spa-like bathroom and shower. Beautiful design details, especially the lighting. We went to the restaurant for dinner and definitely enjoyed the ease and convenience. The decor was lovely - every piece considered and well-designed, and both the food and service were a delight. I enjoyed the kale salad with salmon - perfectly done. Crisp skin on the salmon and well balanced seasoning on the salad which to my surprise and pleasure included anchovies! No kids menu but they were nice enough to make a custom lemonade and pasta dinner for the kiddos. Excellent bread course too with roasted garlic cloves. The decor is very nice, although slightly sterile and I think could use a little more mood in the evening.... But we had a lovely time and will return here next time we visit New Haven. The hotel itself is beautiful and thoughtful in design and we look forward to staying here again.
