Hotel Matilda

"This 32-room hotel may appear traditional, thanks to its colonial facade—but the sleek Hotel Matilda is anything but. There’s a crazy video installation set up behind the front desk, and the hallways are lined with contemporary artwork; and once you get to your room, you’ll discover crisp white beds dressed with Egyptian cotton linens and slate gray accents. Photographs by Mexico City artist Eduardo Zaylan hang on the walls in guest rooms. Marble-clad bathrooms have Malin + Goetz products, and some have free-standing tubs, though the infinity pool (shaded by palm trees) and the rooftop bar are the true standouts. If you’re looking for a boisterous party scene, this isn’t it, but for a slick, adults-only auberge, you can’t do much better."

Hotel Matilda is our Top Choice in San Miguel de Allende!|Hotel Matilda is perfectly located, just a 5-minute stroll from the iconic Parroquia de San Miguel Arcángel and Plaza de la Paz. The hotel itself is incredibly clean and boasts a contemporary, upscale design that's truly impressive. While the room rates are on the higher side, you definitely get what you pay for.|Our room was spacious and impeccably clean, especially the bathroom, which was a real highlight. The staff here are absolutely wonderful – professional, courteous, super nice, and incredibly helpful. A huge thank you to Gustavo, Carlos, and Axel for making our stay even more enjoyable!|We also loved the look of the on-site restaurant, especially the terrace with its pleasant view. We're already planning our next trip to San Miguel de Allende, and there's no doubt we'll be staying at Hotel Matilda again. Strongly recommended!

MATILDA is more like a private resort than a hotel.|Staff are perfectly friendly and accommodating. |We chose a suite category but were upgraded to an even larger suite.|The room was calm, sophisticated, and extremely comfortable.|The bed linens are luxurious as were the bath towels. |The food is magnificent, beautifully prepared and served. Surprising menu options that over achieved our expectations.|The spa was excellent. We had three amazing treatments that again exceeded our expectations.|We were surprised and delighted by the concierge staff. They made all our outside meal reservations. But then they went so far as to surprise us with a round of drinks or the best table in the house. |We were blown away!|We could not say thank you enough

Enjoyed our stay here very much. Hotel is spotless and interestingly designed to amuse and comfort guests. The staff was helpful with recommendations and reservations. Our room was spacious and comfortable. There was a large bathroom and a small deck overlooking the courtyard.||The hotel is in the middle of San Miguel, which is very convenient for walking anywhere in the central town. It can also be noisy at night because of people partying nearby in this dense area. When this hotel was playing music in the courtyard at night at the bar even though no one was there, we asked them to turn it off and they did. ||As Marriott platinum members, we had the complimentary breakfast. It was simple: fruit, yogurt, granola and some pastries. OK, nothing special. Service was good. We didn't take any meals at the hotel restaurant. Recommend staying here to visit the magical city of San Miguel de Allende.

A wonderful experience and highly recommended. The staff is very helpful, accommodating and friendly. The boutique nature of the hotel made the experience even more enchanting.||Located on a very charming street, the Hotel is very close to Centro and a wonderful park nearby. The room with terrace was spacious, very clean with turn down service, and well appointed. Dining was first rate, with drink service at the pool bar excellent as well. ||We would not consider any other Hotel for our next visit and look forward to returning soon.

I was shocked by how many five star reviews that I saw… yes the location is great, and the installations are pretty as well. But the pool is VERY cold, so if you’re visiting outside of the summertime be prepared for that… They also charge for everything in the room, I believe at the very least they should include a sufficient amount of water included with the price of the room. The service is extremely slow. I had very high expectations with it being Michelin star but I’ve never received such horrible service… in the restaurant they mixed up all of the plates, the food took forever, very average tasting. There was never a bartender at the bar, we always had to ask for somebody. Their version of a free breakfast is a slice of bread, a ball of butter and a small plate of fruit. I ordered a latte and they attempted to top it off with regular coffee in the same cup? For it being as expensive as it is, there should’ve been more included and at the very least there should’ve been better service. Also, if you choose to have breakfast at the hotel, be prepared to eat and complete silence next to random people. I’m not over exaggerating when I say complete silence… we were told that they won’t put on any music until 9:30-10AM and it’s very uncomfortable. I understand if people are sleeping, you don’t want anything loud, but even just soft music to fill the silence would have made the experience better, especially like I mentioned, given the prices they were charging.

Excellent service from the refreshing lemonade on arrival till our departure. All professional and done with a smile. Small balcony with most rooms for fresh air and location cannot be beat right off the center of town on a quiet side street. Appreciate that the hotel is part of Marriott Bonvoy and used points for my stay here at a good deal.

The hotel is clean and well designed. The AC is strong and staffs are friendly. However, the experience is below my expectation for the price they charged. We have stayed in a few Mexico hotels in this trip. All other hotels provide sufficient bottle water/filtered water upon request. This is the most expensive hotel that will only provide a small bottle of filtered water per day. Any additional water (in the room) consumed is chargeable. Can't believe hotel like this will nickel and dime guests like this.||Please also be aware that some rooms even on third floors have no elevators. This may be a problem for people with mobility issue. The hotel needs to clearly describe this situation.

This property was a disappointment. It is in the Michelin Guide, has been awarded a Design award and gets good reviews however we found it to be not a well designed hotel and our room was sterile. The pool is tiny with only 5 lounge chairs despite its 32 rooms. There isn't an outdoor lounging space other than the dining area. Our room while large, was completely lacking in character, and quite soulless. Two small windows that were opaque meant no natural light. The beds were comfortable, the Smart lighting a pain. Bathroom was a good size however the vanity was small so there was no space for toiletries. Who designs these spaces? Also a shower curtain rather than glass enclosure meant less light in the shower. Not very 4 star worthy. The continental breakfast included was surprising. Very small amount of yogurt and granola with good amount of nice fruit, white toast (grain bread would have been appreciated) and green juice was lovely. Espresso was extra ($650 US a night!) and drip coffee awful. Also when you check in you're read off a list of "extras" including water in your room (after first free by bottle). Tacky for a highly rated and expensive hotel. All to say, we wouldn't go back.

Yelp
It was our first time visiting SMA and we are so happy we chose Hotel Matilda for our stay. Everything is world class, from the service to the amenities. The room was spotless, decor was classy and the only regret was not staying longer. We booked massages at their spa and it was better than ones we've had in NYC where we are from. Highly recommend and wanted to mention how great our interactions were with Gabriela and Santiago!

Yelp
The staff was amazing! We dined at Moxi, but got to experience and walk through the hotel. The pool, grounds, art, decor, staff and all things about this property is top notch!!

Yelp
Gorgeous space and grounds, comfortable and stylish room (love the casement patio doors and windows, that barn door bathroom mirror, the impeccable bedding), great location. Killed by what should be minor annoyances - but so many that when all added up, they really diminish the experience. Bathroom - soon as you get past the non-existent water pressure, you realize that the hand held shower has two speeds: scalding hot or cold AF. To get to the scalding temperature, it takes about 5- 7 min of trickling. Far as the double sink goes, one is also just scalding hot. Room service - you call during Open hours, you get, Sorry, not available due to special event. No advance notice. 10,000 remotes - one for the incredibly noisy a.c., another for the lights, couple more for the t.v. Which, good luck watching if it's stormy outside. Signal lost. Super dark lobby daytime - turn on couple lamps? Draw the skylight shades? Noisy - the inner courtyard and walkway amplify sounds. Doesn't bug me but it might some others. Pool - gorgeous daytime, covered up with a tarp in the evening, why?! Oh and most importantly - can't stand that coffee is available only at their restaurant. Some of us need a coffee IV started the instant we make eyes!

Yelp
My daughter and I absolutely loved Hotel Matilda, from the first email to our last day. The hotel is gorgeous and the rooms are outstandingly beautiful. I am an Interior Designer in Los Angeles and I have seen it all. The decor at this hotel is stunning, tasteful, fashion-forward and sleek. As far as the rooms go, I love the bedding, the way they make up the bed, the presentation of our bathroom and the cleanliness overall. Really, we have been here for 6 nights and I would stay here again in a hot minute. Being we had never been to San Miguel Allende before, I was hesitant to come here being all we hear about Mexico is the cartel and all of the shootings. Well, toss that to the wind....this is one of the safest places I have ever traveled to. To calm my nerves, the hotel concierge held my hand via email the entire way booking this trip. They emailed me and told me which airports were the easiest to get there, they arranged transportation from pickup to drop off, they recommended restaurants and booked every reservation and best yet, once we got to the hotel, they treated us like family. The hotel is in the best location and walking distance to everything you will want to see and explore. We only took a taxi one time on this entire trip because walking is so easy. Just don't bring heels, ladies, you will be sorry. Flats, tennis shoes and flip flops are the only way to walk around this beautiful city because of the cobblestone streets. If heels are a must, just call a taxi. When we come back to San Miguel Allende we will stay at this hotel again and again and again.

Yelp
Centrally located in downtown San Miguel, walking distance to all... hotel staff very pleasant, polite, and strives to make all aspects of your stay unforgettable. The Moxi Restuarant appears to be always booked with reservations, and makes for complications for walk ins. I found that each time we dined the reservations were indeed overstated and not valid.

Yelp
Getting a room in Hotel Matilda was the worst booking mistakes that I ever made . I travel a lot and I love to stay in boutique hotels; however, I had a very poor experience in this hotel because of their unprofessional staff and getting food poisoning from their restaurant. We went to Mexico for our friend's wedding and we chose this hotel because our photographer spoke highly of their artwork. They gave us a horrible room next to their restaurant and I could easily hear people's conversation over the tables. On top of that, there was an infant crying on the table next to my bed for 3 hours. The noise was so loud that I couldn't rest my eyes for a second. I went to the front desk to request another room and the reception looked into my eyes and told me "this is what you get when you book on Internet." I was shocked first because I believe everyone books their travels online these days, and secondly he didn't even try to address the issue. I thought that was a language barrier and asked for the manger. The manager's name was Juan Pablo Gallegos. He was rude and indifferent as well. By the time he got there I was shaking, and I explained our issues and he looked at me and shrug his shoulder and said, "the hotel is completely booked." He didn't offer any other resolutions and even tried to apologies. I felt devastated and returned back to our room. My husband and I went back to our room and decided to make the best of the situation so we went to their 5 stars restaurant. Few hours later, we got violently sick and couldn't leave our room for the remainder of the trip. Given that we didn't eat anything else that day, I am confident that we got the food poisoning from their restaurant. It is a shame that they call this place a boutique hotels and I will not go back to that hotel under no circumstances.

Yelp
Exceptional service. The staff was very professional and accommodating. The room was beautiful and felt warm and inviting. The brunch was the only shortcoming. I'm still not sure why we were served crickets on the flatbread ... that seems more of a specialty item by request, not an assumption. We were amused but I could not personally try it due to a sensitive stomach. I did order room service and the food was very good. This is more of a party hotel I would say, with very loud dance music being played as early as 11 am. If you like the W hotel, then this is the place for you. If you are looking for more peaceful accommodations, you may want to look elsewhere. I did enjoy my stay and would recommend.

Yelp
Artsy and beautiful Decor and art in hotel is an inspiration. At the restaurant the hamburger is great. Chocolate dessert too. Some of the orher dishes are pricy but presented beautifully. Dishes are small so order a few Sraff friendly. Wifi so slow it is unusable Water pressure low Charges for amenities and water which at usd 400 a night should be incl. All in all beautiful hotel small hotel run like a large mid level hotel

Barbara T.

Yelp
Great hotel. 4 stars is for restaurant service, very slow and tend to mix up orders, especially drinks. The pool is too small and water spills over to the spa if you even try to move in the water, let alone when you try to swim

Yelp
Excellent Hotel... located in the heart of San Miguel de allende, perfect location to walk anywhere.. their welcome drink tastes amazing, and its a beautiful modern boutique hotel. I would even say its prettier than the Rosewood Hotel which is also very nice.

Yelp
I reserved three nights here using 85,000 miles. I was traveling with my elderly mother, so I also booked travel insurance. Sadly, just a week before we were set to depart, my mother had an accident leaving her with three broken ribs, stitches on her face and a concussion, and obviously strict orders not to travel. For over 6 weeks, I've been trying to get a refund of my miles, even partially if nothing else, from this Hotel. I cancelled 7 days before the trip. I've sent medical records from the hospital and emails myself, my credit card company has made numerous failed attempts and the insurance company is also struggling. I have received one form letter email saying, "sorry, but your reservation was non-refundable". I'm incredulous they refuse to make an exception or even respond or have a further conversation. It is so heartless. I don't think places like this deserve people's business. Spend your money elsewhere. I plan to reschedule my trip and can assure you I'll happily go to a different hotel. I should note that everyone else refunded me...airline and car service, no hassle and no issues. Shame on Hotel Matilda.
