Sicily is beautiful but there is no sugarcoating the fact that anything less than a 5-star rating will always have at least one, if not more, of no hot water, low shower pressure, bathrooms the size of closets made doubly impossible to use with (at least in the Anglo American world) redundant bidets, poor breakfasts, reception staff with poor command of English and on and on. This hotel is fully fit for purpose. Everything available works as intended. The grounds, including pool are immaculate and well maintained. Staff are exceptional. One morning an hour before breakfast I was working in the reception area utilising the time difference and the night manager without blinking volunteered “do you want a coffee?”, which hit the spot nicely. Breakfasts were exceptional too, with a maître’d that constantly checked quality and provisioning. Restaurant perfect too. Location is exactly a 6 minute walk from port and main drag to restaurants and surprisingly well merchandised Decò supermarket (if you have luggage you will need vehicular transport up the short hill). An oasis in a country and island where local owners simply accept mediocrity, refuse to pay for ongoing maintenance knowing full well we naive travellers will still pay to stay to experience the natural beauty that God and earlier generations (whether Roman, renaissance etc) bequeathed to the lazy sods.
