Yelp
Just spent a week at Mercurio, during Beef Dip/Bear Week. First time in PV, and any of the above. Going to be blunt:
Pros: Fantastic central location in Zona Romantica and superb, friendly, helpful staff. From concierge/advice service at the front desk, housekeeping that also does laundry, bartender, and get this: Included gourmet, made-to-order breakfast in the cute atrium courtyard with the little pool. Bfast served 8am-11-ish.
For breakfast: Fresh squeezed OJ, espresso machine, fresh fruit, cereals, yogurt, custom egg dishes and omelettes, pastries, potatoes, beans, and daily special meat dishes. Something to look forward to every morning, no matter how hungover. Afternoon, the bar opens until 10pm weekdays. Strong, tasty drinks. Great Tapas-like menu from the kitchen next-door. Wonderful staff.
This courtyard serves as a social gathering focal point for guests to meet, exchange travel experiences, and/or go back to the rooms and exchange bodily fluids, cuddles, kisses; you get it. The Mercurio has a small reputation as a "sauna" and "party central" which could describe the whole of PV. It is what you make of it. I happened to meet someone special there from the NE US with whom I spent the entire week. We're trying to figure out how to keep things going with a 2,500 mile distance.
Rooms: VERY basic, but all you need and everything works: A/C, fan, fridge, WiFi, watercooler and daily bottled pure water, hot shower water with high pressure, clean, a mini-safe, no bugs. My room's bed (rm 202) was hard as a rock. But my new friend's bed two doors down was comfy.
Cons: The loudness and choice of music. All Queen (single) rooms face the pool/courtyard and are subjected to the same tired, way BEYOND LOUD, cliche gringo gay disco thumping all day and night. On most nights, it was off by 10pm, so that was OK. Didn't come to Mexico to hear that when there's so much modern and traditional Mexican and Latino music out there. This is true all over PV. Makes the experience tacky and inauthentic. Clearly, it's targeted to comfort the simple gringos who don't travel much, with familiarity. Sometimes the music was too loud starting at 8am. Something quieter would have been appreciated. One morning was New Age music, but it was blaring and loud. And shit we've been hearing since the 1980s.
Overall a great experience. I would return here
