Hotel Monaco & Grand Canal

"The Benetton family acquired this 100-room Venice hotel in the 1990s, and have since incorporated three adjacent buildings. The first houses an additional 30 small but comfortable accommodations that are a mix of Venetian opulence (silk fabrics, Murano glass) and minimalist understatement. The second is the storied Palazzo Dandolo, where Casanova seduced courtesans in the seventeenth century and which is now reserved for public functions. And the third is the Palazzo Selvadego, where Luciano Benetton’s personal architect, Moreno Carniato, brings a masculine elegance to the magnificent late-Gothic palace’s 40 rooms. Although the staff won’t win any hospitality awards, the hotel’s fabulous location on the Grand Canal at St. Mark’s makes up for it."

Our first trip to Venice was unforgettable, and staying at Hotel Monaco & Grand Canal played a huge part in that. From the moment we arrived, the staff were so warm and welcoming — nothing was too much trouble. We stayed in the Deluxe Double With Grand Canal View, and it was absolutely stunning. Watching the gondolas pass by from our window felt like something out of a dream. The room itself was spacious, beautifully decorated, and really comfortable. Everything about our stay felt special. The service was exceptional, and the atmosphere throughout the hotel was just lovely. A huge thank you to all the amazing staff for making our first visit to Venice so memorable — we’re already looking forward to coming back. Highly recommend!

What a lovely way to start the day! We had breakfast at the hotel restaurant to celebrate my friend’s birthday, and it turned out to be one of the best birthdays she’s ever had. One of the staff members — we don’t know his name — was incredibly kind and funny. He brought a candle to surprise my friend and made us smile with his great energy. And the most touching part? When we received the bill, we noticed they didn’t even charge us for the birthday cake we had ordered. It was their special gift to her. I’ve never experienced such thoughtful and generous service in a hotel restaurant before. A big thank you to that amazing staff member — your kindness made our morning truly unforgettable!

This hotel was located right in the canal. Having breakfast on the terrace was lovely!! What a view. We arrived on a boat from the airport. |The staff were wonderful, the room was beautiful and easily accessible to St.Mark Square. It really was delightful!

This was our first stay at the Hotel Monaco & Grand Canal and it was a very memorable experience. The hotel is beautiful and, as its name suggests, sits right on the Grand Canal with amazing views from the well-appointed suites. Waking up to those views over the Grand Canal every morning, and being only a 2-minute walk from Saint Mark’s Square is a priceless experience. The service was also exquisite, the staff very helpful organising activities and helping with various arrangements.

The room we reserved was a canal view with balcony. What we were given was a balcony room with no view. The hotel was unwilling to adjust our room rate for the disappointing room. Additionally, the morning buffet breakfast was the worst we experienced in all of Italy. They had a poor selection of fruit and actually ran out on our last day. Finally, don't expect a complementary bottle of water when they do turn down service. Total disappointment. Not worth the high cost.

My husband and I came here as part of a 10 day trip to Italy (Venice, Florence, Rome) for our honeymoon - we married last October. Italy is also my ancestral home, I have Italian blood on my mum's side, so it's been a dream of mine for many years to visit. ||I can say this without any doubt in my mind, Venice was our favourite part of the honeymoon, and we almost wish we'd picked Venice to see last, only because we loved it so much! ||We had a hugely fun ride to the hotel via water taxi and took in many of the surrounding sights, putting us in a gleeful mood before we very conveniently hopped off just outside the door. On arrival, we were warmly welcomed by the reception team who wished us congratulations and told us how to find our room. When we opened the door, we were absolutely blown away by the design and attention to detail. From the marble bathroom to the glass chandelier and everything in-between, it lit up with an magical golden hue, reflecting the magic of Venice itself. All the amenities we needed were there, including a lovely stocked mini bar and fabulous shower, lovely on-brand robes and a very comfy bed. The only issue we had during our stay was the TV not working properly (the only channels in English were for the news) but we weren't bothered by that as we didn't spend much time in the room anyway! ||On our first morning in Venice, we decided to enjoy breakfast at the hotel and were delighted to be able to sit outside, taking in the gorgeous blue hues of the lagoon and the gentle rays of the morning sun. It was incredibly peaceful and exactly what we'd hoped for. The breakfast options were a little limited in some areas but for the most part we enjoyed what we had and it prepared us well for a day full of walking!||Of course, while Venice has can be breezy and at times a little rainy, it can also be quite hot and a couple of days into our time there I ended up with a mild case of heatstroke in the evening. I wasn't really hungry but I did really want a hot chocolate and wondered whether the room service team could send one up to me. My husband called and initially they offered chamomile tea which I know Italians typically drink when they're sick, however it's not to my taste, so he asked again for hot chocolate. Thankfully, they soon obliged and sent the cutest pot of hot chocolate up to our room. I really enjoyed it and it made me feel better, so thank you!||We were genuinely sad when our last day came around and we had to leave. Venice has a truly special place in our hearts and we can't wait to return in the future. A sincere thank you to the staff for being wonderful and accommodating, and generally to the Italian people for making us feel at home during our honeymoon. ||Grazie per aver reso magica la nostra visita, ritorneremo!

Don’t stay here if you like to wear shorts. The bar and restaurant won’t serve you. We are from Florida and had shorts on and button up shirts with collars and they refused service. They looked at us with a weird face when we asked for drinks.l and said “No”. By the way, the place was empty and we spent hundreds staying there for several nights. They lost out on money because of their stupid dress code. I’ll never stay there again. Instead we spent our money elsewhere. They seriously need to review this policy. It’s not good for business especially with clientele from all over the world.

It is a perfect place to enjoy Venice. My wife and I honeymooned here in 2013 and had fantastic memories. This time we came back and it was everything we remembered. The staff is amazing and everything was perfect! If you travel to Venice this is the place to stay and the place to eat! Try to book too 414! It will change your life.

Yelp
My husband and ihadnustarrived in Venice from the US. We chose Hotel Monaco to have our dinner. First I have to say we are gluten free and not all restaurants have this option. After going over the menu and our waiter went back and forth to the kitchen to talk to the chef we placed our order of gluten free pasta. When our dish arrived it was Un edible because it was SO salty. It was loaded with salt like someone dumped the shaker in the food bad. My husband complained but the waiter ignored him. We were tired so we let it go. We walked away we wish we would have engaged the waiter better And complained. It was not cheap eating here. The view was nice, but the food and service can't be ignored. I do not usually complain, but this was over the top, and no reason for it. The chef knew what he did.mad at us for gluten free pasta?

Yelp
This is a really nice hotel. The water taxi brought us straight to its back door from the main part of Italy so it's quite convenient. It's a very nice looking hotel. The tour guide said it was remodeled so the outside and inside look fairly new. The room I stayed in was clean and outside the window are the shops. Only thing about living in a busy place is that you can hear the music and the chatter that happens outside from when the shops open till when they close. Night time is quite calm and quiet unless there are some drunk people talking on the street. I took off a star because (I don't know if it's an Italy thing or Europe thing) housekeeping came into the room while we were at dinner. We're usually used to them coming in the morning and cleaning the room everywhere else I've ever gone and no one told us they would be coming in. So after dinner there were like rugs on the side of the bed and they moved the breakfast card to the bed. I would be okay with this if we had a heads up but since we didn't know we had our stuff everywhere and suitcases open (not saying they would take anything but it's always better to know what's going on). And the thing is what they moved in the room was very subtle..which makes it just a tad bit more scary.

Yelp
Booked four night here for our honeymoon. First impression is the lobby is very impressive and upscale, excited to stay here as it looks pretty nice. Check in was uneventful, the lady that checked us in was all business, not really welcoming and pleasant like you expect at a four star hotel but got the job done efficiently. For some reason they gave us a sad old dingy outdated room on the third floor with a window out to the noisy street where the water bus lets out hoards of people every 30 minutes and the stench of cigarette smoke wafts in anytime you open the window. I'm familiar with hotels in Italy and understand the limitations inherit to remodeling very old buildings and adjust my expectations accordingly however the room itself would not even be close to passable at a $100\night hotel in the US. The air vents were encrusted with dust and most likely the ducts had some sort of mold inside based on the smell and breathing irritation we experienced after the first night. The bathroom was disgusting and decrepit, there was mold all over the bathtub and years of gross dried up caulk peeling and falling from the cracks, also the faucet would vomit up a bit of water every 15 minutes or so for unknown reasons which was annoying to listen to all night. The mattress was horrible and bedding was cheap and scratchy, the pillows felt like 2 inch thick slabs of compressed old horse hair. After the first night we asked to be moved to a different room and they accommodated the request although they didn't seem real happy to do it and notably did not apologize in any way for the state of the previous room. The new room was on the fourth floor, brand new and fully remodeled albeit in a style I personally found offensively gaudy it was definitely a big improvement over the old room. The stark difference between the two rooms really made it seem like a a slap in the face that they would even have the nerve to pawn the old decrepit room off on us. The bathroom was spotless and quite attractive however the shower was a absolute design failure in that there was no way to use it without gallons of water leaking onto the floor as the undersized glass door was not sealed to the wall in any way and the bath surround tilted out way from the tub for some reason. While the new room was clean it was even smaller than the previous room and had no space to unpack two suitcases and no full length mirror. The bed and linens were still pretty bad; the mattress was two rock hard twin beds crammed together and the pillows were just basic cheap foam pillows nothing nice and fluffy or special like you'd get at a Hilton or Marriott in the US. Compared to other similarly priced hotels we stayed at throughout Italy on this trip we felt this was the worst value in general; the room did not have a coffee\espresso maker, no free bottle of water each day, the mattress bedding and towels were all very low quality as were the toiletries.

Yelp
Terrible service, terrible attitude, their system was down conveniently when I was trying to check in Way over priced for what it's worth. I put my translate app on while they were talking in Italian, and multiple curse words were used as well as demeaning context. Be aware they don't respect you.

Yelp
This is not a hotel to go to if you're traveling alone-which I was -and it felt really weird -they pretty much stuck me in the corner of any place to eat or drink and were not friendly just tried to get me to opay full price for the overpriced breakfast. They gave me a tiny room with absolutely no view for a very high price and the safe didnt work so I dont recommend. The location is great however-near San marco and the dining room looks onto the water

Yelp
Cocktail for 20 dollars to literally fight with pigeons to eat your food and drink your drinks.. Ridiculous

Yelp
These people are crazy to think this hotel is nice. Don't let the lobby fool you. The rooms smell like mold and are tiny. The front desk: the two ladies I dealt with were ok but a bit rude and fake. If you don't speak Italian expect a frown. Concierge: speaks English and was very helpful and professional. It was pouring rain and he offered us a hotel umbrella to use so we wouldn't be stuck sitting in the lobby all afternoon. The restaurant was way overpriced and the food was mediocre. Plus you'll be fighting with pigeons during lunch, which was pretty disgusting. The staff however were some what attentive and friendly. The breakfast is simple and boring. Don't expect the staff to be nice. They get snappy and do not look happy at all. Very limited English speakers. Bed linens were rough like everyone said.

Yelp
A wonderful two night experience Located in the heart of Venice three minutes from Piazza San Marco Square we couldn't have been more comfortable. Requested "triple" provided ample room with a very spacious marble bathroom - sizable desk area and plenty of closet space. Water pressure was perfect - towels aplenty as service caters to its guests. A request for an electrical adapter was satisfied within minutes Hotel lobby - with beautiful marble from floor to ceiling was stunning as was the upstairs ballroom. Nice breakfast buffet (strong coffee) overlooking Venice waters & Gondolas - outstanding relaxing experience - perfect way to start your day.

Yelp
Fantastic upscale restaurant with an amazing view! The service was great - we were able to sit down earlier than our 9:00 reservation that was made by our hotel concierge. We split a pasta dish and each had our own second course - the duck was delicious and so was the swordfish that my wife had! Definitely expensive but a very nice experience given the front row seat on the grand canal.

Yelp
Nice hotel great location. Got an upgrade to the balcony suite. Perfect view

Yelp
We booked a superior double room directly with the hotel on 1st April for 12th June for 3 nights. I was very disappointed to be given a disabled room but unfortunately didn't really realise until too late in the evening for this to be rectified. We changed the next morning but there was no apology at all from the Hotel for the error. Very disappointing especially as this was a special trip to Venice for my husband and I.

Yelp
Convenient location, nice hotel, didn't eat there because hotel was close to lots of other sights. I'd stay there again.

Yelp
WOW!! An amazing 2 nights- next time longer! Best spot in Venice- can throw a coin in the canal from room if we wanted! The closest to the water out of all hotels on Grand Canal! Had 2 rooms upper level middle of hotel - canal view was out of this world and just enough away from crowded areas where people walk by... But can walk to St Marks square in 2 minutes! The Monaco you cannot walk directly in front of so it's perfect! Staff was so amazing, dinners were amazing. Restaurant out front was so special you can watch gondolas pull right up. So picturesque - trust me don't search any longer- we are picky people and did our research! By far was greatest choice of trip!! Thank you Nicola and Andreas! Had the best time!

Yelp
Great location - just off of the San Marco dock. Restaurant (free breakfast buffet) is just on the water's edge with a view of the church Chiesa della Salute. Good selection of food. Concierge was very helpful, gave us a free water taxi ride to Murano. Our rooms were actually at Palazzo Selvadego which is about 100 m away but is part of this grand hotel. Choose a room that is away from the main street as it could be noisy since we open windows for cooling the room. Also, our room without the bath tub, only a shower, is better, more spacious.

Nosheen A.

Yelp
Lovely hotel and brilliant location on the Grande Canal very close to St. Marks square. The only downside was that the room was smaller than it appeared in the images and there was no iron in the room (pressing service was extortionate).

Nigel O.

Yelp
Excellent hotel the best location on the Grand Canal I found from wandering around Venice and with it's own drop off. Only reason I did not give it 5 stars was for the restaurant. I could not fault the food or the offering but it lacked atmosphere as it was not very busy but the staff were excellent and most attentive. Our room was starting to get tired and could do with a refurbishment but not to the point it caused me a problem it was clean and tidy. Reception staff could not do enough to help although on check we did get the one who was having a bad day and did not seem to care whether we were there or not.

Marc K.

Yelp
A lovely hotel. Terrace restaurant is right on the Grand Canal. A no-bridge walk from one of the water taxi stops, and only one small bridge from the airport stop. Staff was courteous. Restaurant is excellent. We had an "ordinary" room, but it was very comfortable. And besides, we spent most of our days away from the hotel. Booked with Hotels.com.
