I had a lovely weeks stay at Hotel Monte Carlo back in August. The hotel is about an 8 minute walk from the courthouse bus stop that I used everyday to be picked up for tours. My room was comfortable and spacious with a private bathroom. I faced the rooftop swimming pool which was amazing after a day hiking! All the staff are lovely and helpful (especially the young lady on reception). Breakfast is nice consisting of; juice, coffee, toast, cereal, fresh fruit… There’s a lot of negative reviews about the hotel, it was the cheapest hotel when I booked in peak season. It’s a budget hotel so please don’t expect Downton Abbey upon arrival!

By far the worst hotel I've ever been. Its definetly not 3 stars. The breakfast is disgusting and almost inapropriate to eat. Room is also a disaster: no air con, pillow and the bed are old and not confortable. Met the owner couple of times and she was drunk. Only thing that is good there is the staff members, that were always very polite and helpful. I would not recommend this hotel not even for half a day. I WOULD RATHER CANCEL MY TRIP TO FUNCHAL IF THIS WERE THE ONLY OPTION.

The staff are all wonderful. I loved this historic hotel with amazing views. A lovely bar is set up on the terrace nightly. The pool is very nice and clean. The rooms are clean and the bed was comfortable. The downside is long hill to get down. No chairs around the pool. No air conditioning, though, that doesn't bother me. They did offer me a fan, but it was very breezy being on the hill that I didn't need it. Breakfast was good, Covered all the bases. I would stay here again.

Very friendly staff but a bit insisting for you to consume drinks. The hotel used to be “grand” but it’s just all in its juice and never been renovated. The rooms are old, everything is very rusty and mold on the ceiling. The good part is the common parts, looking like the 70 les but you don’t stay in Madeira to stay in a Lobby. Nice view as well, and basic breakfast. Hotel out of the center, up hill and narrow street. It’s basic, basic low. A bit pricy for rooms being spacious but very very old.

Toilet was a revolting nightmare, stained, crusted, and home to more bugs than a jungle expedition. There was no air conditioning and being in the middle of a humid Madeira summer…its not just uncomfortable, it’s borderline cruel. Breakfast was sad and very poor but hey, they had a pool… The whole place feels like it’s been abandoned by time and common sense. Its sad, theres bizzarre decorations, spooky even and the whole building was run down. Such a shame.

A lovely, good value, central hotel that is an antidote to all the chain glass and concrete edifices in the hotel zone.|It's immediate attraction are the incredible views over Funchal from it's perch on the hillside. However the delightful staff really made our stay special. Super-friendly and always caring to go the extra mile to make sure we were happy.|We would definitely stay here again on a repeat trip to Madeira.|

Staff was very friendly, breakfast was good. I do not unterstand the ratings complaining about the room service. They tidied up the room, cleaned the bathroom (we had left some mud from the hiking day before) and the towels very changed every day as well. In general I liked the 19th century asthetics of the hotel and wouldn‘t have wanted to stay in another hotel.

No change then. We stayed there a few yrs ago. I slipped and fell in the shower room because the shower leaked. Oranges in the breakfast room locked in a glass cabinet. I asked for one and was refused. You can't make this up. The man behind the bar looked like Manuel. He was gorgeous and friendly.
