We had such a fun experience staying at the Hotel Monte Vista. It is, however, not for the faint of heart of the "finicky" traveler. If you can ride with the inconveniences and appreciate all the charm, intrigue, character and revelry, you will thoroughly enjoy your stay.
First, the historic building itself is fun to explore and research. Apparently, it has experienced many "tragedies" which lead to the mystique of being haunted. We didn't personally experience any spirits of any sort, but were open to the possibility. The visual details were interesting, especially on the first floor and from outside the building.
This establishment is hopping with activity. We are not partners yet it was fun to watch people having fun. We do want a good night sleep so booked our room on the upper floors, away from the bar area on the first floor. The fourth floor suite was actually noisier than the third floor suite, both booked on weekend nights, book-ending our trip to AZ. The noise level outside, from the streets, with windows cracked, was not difficult to handle either night.
We were traveling with two adults couples so the option of sharing a two bedroom suite was perfect. The bathroom adjoining the rooms, in an L-shaped configuration, was tiny yet clean and functional. The doors allowed privacy. The windows might or might not go up easily to get air in the rooms (the place is old) but the ceiling fans worked well and kept air circulating.
We visited the Hotel in April. Be advised that there is no air conditioning in the Hotel. April was mild, actually perfect weather but July and August? Not sure this Michigander could handle the heat.
Our queen beds were comfortable in all rooms; probably of medium firm support. The bedding was comfortable. The rooms were large enough to feel cozy yet open. We enjoyed the views out the windows.
One of the best features of the Hotel is its location. It is walking distance from the Amtrak Station (we ride in and felt safe walking to and from the hotel late at night and very early in the morning.). It is in the historic downtown district which is lively at most hours, quieter in the early morning, and full of interesting shops, restaurants, street art, Hwy 66 memorabilia, historical walking tours, ghost walking tours, art tours.... Plenty to fill a long weekend or even a longer stay.
The staff were variable. Some staff were exceptionally helpful and others were less so. Hey, very similar to the hotel itself (wonderful features and "tolerable" challenges).
We will definitely be returning. Hotel Monte Vista is our kind of place on an adventure travel vacation.
