Broken AC. Staff did not care. It was 98 degrees F in our room. After carrying 2 large suitcases up 3 flights of stairs (no elevator) there was no relief. We asked if they could repair the AC (turned on but no sound or airflow). They said could not repair it. We asked for a fan, they did not have one. We opened the one window in our room, but there was not a breeze. We could not sleep. The morning after our first night we asked if they could move us. They could not. They just did not seem to care about our level of discomfort. We told them we would like to check out because we just couldn't sleep and we only had a couple more nights. They argued and refused to reimburse us. We asked for a manager. When he arrived on property he said he would reimburse us the remaining two nights. He never did after repeated calls and emails. We ended up finding a room at Bellavista in Menaggio for the same nightly rate. It was lovely and we salvaged the rest of our stay.||I would like to say something positive about this hotel as I am not one to complain. My husband and I have never had such a horrible hotel experience, and we travel quite a bit. The location of this hotel is very convenient (close to the train station), but that is it.

Very convenient hotel, a short downhill walk from the train station and just steps from the Varenna ferry dock and town center. Excellent staff who were very accommodating to my change in plans to avoid an Italian rail strike. Great breakfast as well.

Totally great hotel not sure what the low reviews are about. The staff are kind and very helpful. The continental breakfast was absolutely great and plenty of it. I took a single room and have absolutely no complaints for the price. I booked through Agoda and stayed in early July but the price was still great although likely higher and higher as the tourists arrive in droves and prices go up, but this is the fault of tourists crowding into Lake Como and all the accommodation in the area is the same. Perfect location to get the ferry early and beat the crowds.

It was a challenging situation for a foreigner like me to travel during Italy’s strike. The staff gave me advice in a rather annoyed tone. Other than the good location, I don’t think this hotel has anything else to offer.

Location is fantastic for the price - we were booked in Hotel Barretta. Lake is 200 yards away, food market with coffee, sandwiches and basics is just next door. That said - the room is barely one step up from a hostel - or it is a hostel with a private bathroom and private room. White on white institutional rooms. Beds are not comfortable and very small. I literally don’t fit in the shower - I wear a size 22 - not a very large person. It’s about 2.5 feet square. I have to shower with the door open and I can’t bend down to reach shampoo and soap. If I sit on the toilet I have to sit sideways. The AC didn’t work (and it is a hot July day), the staff did bring us a fan when we told them it wasn’t working. But eventually this was untenable. My partner got up on a chair and removed the AC filter (thick with dust, no wonder it wasn’t working). I washed the filters out in the shower and reinstalled them and now it’s working. Ice would be nice. More than one pillow per person would be nice. Ultimately if I am going to be staying in a hostel, I’d prefer to be paying hostel prices.

Please do not be discouraged from booking because of the 3-star title. Yes, the rooms are very basic. However, you are in such a prime location. The beauty is within the town, not the hotel. The staff were so kind and so helpful and the rooms were stocked with all the amenities. It is a 5-minute walk from the train station and a 5-minute walk (maybe even less) from the water.

During my two-night stay in a single room, I had an overall positive experience. However, there were a few aspects that could be improved for a more comfortable stay. The bed was notably small for a single, and the bathroom, while functional, was compact, leading to the shower curtain clinging uncomfortably during use. Additionally, the toilet's proximity to the wall may pose a challenge for larger guests. On the bright side, the establishment boasts several noteworthy attributes: Exceptional Staff: The staff members were incredibly friendly and accommodating throughout my stay. Despite arriving before the designated check-in time amidst inclement weather, they graciously allowed me to access my room early, which was immensely appreciated. Notably, a young gentleman and lady went above and beyond to assist me during various instances, from assisting with luggage to offering invaluable insights about the hotel and the local area. Their attentiveness extended to remembering guests' preferences and offering assistance with tasks such as navigating language barriers and facilitating early check-out arrangements. Moreover, their quick response and aid during an unfortunate accident at breakfast, where I sustained a minor injury, showcased their professionalism and genuine concern for guests' well-being. Room Amenities: While the room itself was compact, it was adequately equipped with essential amenities. Notably, the provision of a diverse range of toiletries, including a generous bottle of argan oil lotion, was a thoughtful touch. However, the

We are traveling for 2 weeks in Italy and our stay here was was very disappointing. On a positive note the staff was friendly and helpful and the location was convenient to the ferry and train station. There is a laundry close by which we used. However the rooms were clean but spartan. There was about 12” between the end of the bed and the wall. No desk chair, no lobby, lots of stairs both inside and out to manage without help with luggage or an elevator. Breakfast was just average and not available until 8 am. Over all feel of rooms was frankly depressing.

Yelp
Comfortable place, near the station (2 blocks) and the ferries (1 block). The rooms are simple and very clean. Our room had a partial view of Lake Como. Nice staff - they called the Varenna hair stylist for me (reservations required). Complimentary breakfast (8-10am) was filling - coffee, pastries, meat, cheese, yogurt, fruit, juice, granola cereal. Just 2 blocks from town square, Piazza San Giorgio, where there are many restaurants and shops. Quiet and safe area. Great value.
