"A British-themed property inspired by Kyoto’s sister city of Edinburgh, Hotel Monterey caters to travelers seeking more modern comforts than typically provided at a ryokan. Tartan makes an appearance, as do bookshelves lined with old tomes and dainty tea sets in The Library, the hotel’s café and bar. There’s even a recreation of a London chapel in the courtyard, complete with stained glass, wooden pews, and a bell tower. Guestrooms wouldn’t be out of place in a British hotel, save for the quality green tea, electric hot-water dispensers, and Toto toilets with built-in bidets, but the restaurants trend a little more traditional, with one serving French fare and the other multi-course, kaiseki -style dinners. On the top floor, guests can also enjoy a spa, which features views of the city as well as hot baths filled with natural spring water."

This hotel was our first stay in Japan and it definitely had the most comfortable beds, the best air conditioning, and nicest bathrooms and general amenities out of every place we stayed at (mind you we primarily stayed at hostels). You don't need to bring ANY toiletries with you if you are staying here, EVERYTHING is provided, even slippers to walk in and pajamas which they replace daily if you want.||The location is great, it's close to different subway connections and buses so getting around was easy from here. There is a coin laundry about 10mins walking distance from the hotel which was very important in the summer. Lots of restaurant options nearby, 7-11, Lawsons, etc...||Yes, there is a local tax you have to pay on arrival which was unexpected, but it was nothing astronomical and frankly, with the level of comfort this place provided, it was worth every penny.||The hotel is well maintained, clean, staff are professionally dressed and considerate. Really no complaints.

As the title says, good hotel but needs updating. The room was extremely dark with dark wallpaper and dark carpet. It is noticeable that the room has not been updated in a while, which is unfortunate because the lobby is beautiful with black and white granite floors. The room was comfortable and in a good location for what I needed. I was a little put off that the breakfast buffet was about $30 USD and everywhere else I have traveled in Japan it’s not been more than $16 USD, so I opted to go to the Starbucks reserve that was literally a 1 minute walk from the hotel. No real complaints about the stay, would still recommend the hotel for a short stay.

Our room was clean and spacious enough for two people and a child. Beds were soft. Staff consistently hospitable and helpful. Car parking (elevator type) was very handy. Good location, walkable to shopping streets to East and subway station.

We enjoyed staying at this hotel. For the price the rooms were a reasonable size. The location was great for sight seeing with short walking distances to some main tourist areas. Room had good amenities, comfortable beds and pillows, good sized bathroom and shower. The hotel also has a shared onsen free for guests to use which was great. Went in the early evening and it wasn't busy.

We was 5 Friends in two rooms, and enjoyed the place thar the hotel is. Is Next to the commercial street in Kioto and newt to the Nishiki market. The breakfast was delicious with variety of things like japanese desserts, chicken, rice, cereals, bread and more. The rooms were smaller than the Hotel Monterey Osaka. This hotel has Spa too, but tattooed man can't entry. The personal was so polite and paceful people, i enjoyed a lot. The hotel has an enormous beautiful church inside the hotel.

Located near a bunch of sites and with great connections, Monterey is a lovely hotel with onsen baths that are well worth it and a very friendly and professional staff. We definitely want to come back and hope we can soon. We didn't eat at the restaurants so can't comment on those

This was so disappointing. We booked here because they have the hot baths but because of a tattoo ( birds and mandala/ mandala) we can’t get in. When we brought this up as the reason for our stay they refused to do anything about it. We decided to leave this hotel and they charged us $270 for one night even though I can book that hotel for the same day for $120?!?!? They also charged an additional tax even though my reservation said all included. The room only had 1 bed instead of two and was super small. They are plenty of cheaper hotel right around the corner. So we are spending the other 8 days somewhere else. Don’t go there they are just trying to rip you off if you don’t speak Japanese. We stayed in same chain in Tokyo and were treated completely different this one is to be avoided

We randomly choosed this hotel for its distance to train stasion and turned out the location is great. Not far from Nishiki market and Gion. There are a few bus stops in walking distance. The room is spacious and cozy (we added an extra bed and it's still ok). The staffs were friendly and patient.

Yelp
I really enjoyed our stay at this hotel! I stayed with my partner in a double standard room for 6 nights, 5 days. This was the largest room that we got during our trip and all of the rooms that we booked were Double rooms, but the one at this hotel had a slide out bed that fit underneath the main bed! It's only a 4 minute walk to the hotel from the station if you're traveling from the greenline from Kyoto station and very close to Nishiki market. They provide good amenities: shampoo, conditioner, body wash, hand soap, toothbrushes, hair brush, razors, shower sponge (aka loofah), Q-tips, and such. Towels could have used some replacing because they weren't as plush anymore but they still worked. They have umbrellas for you to borrow so that you don't have to purchase your own. It's one of those hotels where you leave a card in the slot near the door to prevent wasting electricity. I like the security that they have where you need to tap your hotel card in order to enter the floor with the rooms.

Yelp
What a beautiful hotel! The service is top tier. The room was just beautiful! The room provided water bottles, toothbrushes, razors, combs, shampoo, conditioner and sleeping wear! Now for the good stuff, the bed! It was a plush mattress with an even more lighter and fluffier comforter. If you can, ask for one with a view of the city. The view at night is mesmerizing. The location is excellent to explore the city by foot and there is riding station 3 minutes away. Check out is at 11am and an additional 1200 yen per hour, if allowed. The hotel offers to hold your luggage after check out so you can continue exploring the city! This hotel offers a onsen! (Public bath) This hotel is worth every penny.

Yelp
Second trip to this property and overall very pleased. Room was impeccable upon check in and all aspects were welcoming and comfortable. Amenities in room were excellent with water, tea and any necessary toiletries. Breakfast was again the highlight of the visit! Many offerings and setting was warm and delightful. Location is excellent for access to Kyoto station and markets. This property has improved from last visit and will definitely return.

Yelp
This is a very beautiful hotel. I love having the variety of food at breakfast. The room is small but ok. The breakout areas are lovely. The bar area is definitely a well designed feature. Having a church in the foyer is a plus for a wedding and reception. The staff are most helpful especially when we asked where is the laundromat. We were a little disappointed that the spa was at cost.

Yelp

Yelp
What a classy place for a soak. The onsen is not really what I envisioned as a traditional onsen but being I didn't have time to go into the countryside for a more traditional ryokan onsen (this trip) hotel monterey was a great initiation. The hotel lobby is top notch and high end and very welcoming. The onsen is open to non hotel guests and it's on the 13th floor (guess that's not an unlucky number in this country!) Once I got there I had to remove my shoes immediately and place in a locker. They are very warm and welcoming and helped me to choose the right package. I picked a $5800 yen package of onsen use and foot massage with one free drink. They don't speak much English but more than enough to get the rules across. They escorted me back a luxurious and modern hallway to the men's locker room to change and gave me a key for my locker. The Locker key is also how they know what you order in the lounge so don't lose it. I changed out of all my clothes. Yes I had to be completely nude. I did take a towel for the shower. However even the shower is open to viewing and just a bucket and a sprayer and soap (not that luxurious) but I stood and rinsed down. Anyone could see all but that's part of the experience. No point in being bashful. Japanese seem to be very strict about onsen rules. I could not go in there clothed other than a towel to cover myself when I was walking around and once I got in the bath I had to be nude. Not even a towel can touch the water. So I took a quick shower and soaked for a while before getting up to leave. Very relaxing and hot. The locker room has a toilet and full sets of amenity kits with toothbrushes soaps, etc. Very convenient. Very much like a spa in the US. Just with an outdoor bath that you can't be dressed for. (They also don't allow people with tattoos for fear of yakuza gang activity.) After the soak I went to the very luxurious lounge where you can lay on comfortable lounge chairs and prop your feet up to an amazing view of all of Kyoto. I was treated to a thunderstorm show from my chair (thanks Mother Nature). Then I ordered some drinks and food and enjoyed a very needed 30 min foot massage. It was the PERFECT end to a day that started at 4am and including walking more than 10 miles. I stayed almost to closing at 8pm. The staff was warm and friendly at every point. I will definitely return if I come back to Japan and hopefully expand to a countryside full ryokan onsen experience next time. They even gave me a free umbrella when they saw it was raining. I had no idea it was even raining.

Yelp
It was pretty classy hotel (kind of like a Hilton) for under $200/night. The rooms were large for Japan hotel standards, but still smaller than what you'd find at most American hotels. There's a pretty wedding chapel in the middle of the hotel. The beds were comfortable. I liked how there were numerous electrical outlets, and how we were provided a free smartphone for information + free all domestic/some international calls. It saved us when we had to re-book our plain tickets. (Many other hotels provide this too.)

Yelp
May 2017 The Hotel Monterey is a very serviceable and practical choice. We paid about $170/night, and, if possible, I wouldn't recommend going any higher than that. The positives of this property are: * Centrally located with easy access to nearby bus and subway stops * Clean * Sufficiently comfortable bed * Wi-fi included * Very helpful English-speaking staff. They can tell you about local attractions and restaurants. * Guests can purchase one-day or multi-day bus and subway passes. The negatives are: * Very small rooms (though probably par for the course for Japanese standards) * In our room the shower head was hard to control - water spilled everywhere * The iron provided was barely functional I don't think any of the negatives I cited constitute dealbreakers for staying here. It seems to be a very typical hotel for its price range.

Yelp
Stayed here for two nights in early December in a superior double room (2 travelers sharing what felt like a queen sized bed) Hotel Monterey Kyoto is located near Gion, the main shopping area in Kyoto, and walking distance to Maruyuma Park, Pontocho Alley, and Nishiki Market. It is a block from the Karasuma Oike station, which is only a few stops from the Kyoto Station. As a tourist, this hotel is well located, considering many of the temples are best reached via bus. Our room felt extremely clean with modern decor. Though space was tight, it was manageable for two people. Everyone we spoke to was very accommodating, polite and helpful. We never heard sounds coming from other rooms. No complaints with this hotel!

Yelp
Hotel location is good which is in the center most of the places we wanted to go. There are always taxis waiting outside the hotel so this saved us much time. Lobby is very classy but room is not much different than other business hotel. This place has onsen on their 13/F (can't remember exact floor) but it will cost $1700+ yen for day pass. Very steep for the quality IMO. We prefer to stay somewhere else with more practical facilities if we are in Kyoto in the future.

Yelp
One of my favorite hotels in Kyoto. This is my second time staying and we are here for 10 days. The rooms have a European influence but for the price that can be overlooked. This time many more of the staff members can speak English and there was even a pop-up shop on the main level today. It is a great place to stay while discovering the nearby Nishiki market. There is a beautiful temple across the street right behind the Starbucks that is easy to miss- but don't miss it!
