We hired a car in Bergen and traipsed our way for a few days around western Norway, trying to stay in real hotels. A mixed bag, with a range of disengaged staff, under-invested-in properties, and crap American white wine being passed off as Chablis. Until we got to the glorious Hotel Mundal on beautiful Fjærland Fjord. |I'm sure it helped that the weather was perfect and a 100 ft old style cruiser was sitting in the fjord, but Hotel Mundal still commanded the village of bookshops and lovely houses like a duchess. We had the Tower Room, which is generous, balconied, and had the best bathroom view imaginable up the fjord to the glacier. A drink on the terrace (split a 1/2 of pleasant champagne to celebrate my wife's birthday the day before - hotel that night in Geiranger hadn't anything vaguely appropriate), a walk through the village, a visit to the Glacier Museum and then the best small hotel dinner we had - eaten in lovely big room, well presented food, cooked with even a little flair. Capped off by a complimentary desert for my wife because the lovely Polish waiter had overheard us talking about her birthday on the terrace! |Sure the old lady could use some work - and it's coming soon, according to our chat with the owner on checking out. But regardless, this grand hotel is true to its heritage in every important way, from the passion of the owner to the enthusiasm and courtesy of the staff, from the grand scale to the detail of the stencils around the cornices, from the (discretely displayed) lists of grand visitors to the perfect furniture. |If you can't tell, we loved it and will be back.
