The Essential Guide to Yokohama, Japan

"Opened in 1927, this storied waterfront hotel preserves much of its original Western-style charm—rich carpeted staircases, vintage chandeliers, and ornate moldings—while overlooking a romantic park known for rose gardens and antique wooden benches. It has hosted legendary guests across the decades and often appears in Japanese films, making it a cinematic and historic place to stay that evokes 1920s Japan." - Kim Kay

Hotel New Grand

"How did it strike you on arrival? This is like the Plaza of Yokohama: grand and rich, historic. Much of its 1927 Western-style glamour remains intact. Nice. What’s the crowd like? It's popular with cruise passengers because of its proximity to the terminal. The good stuff: Tell us about your room. There's the old hotel and a new tower (where some rooms have a harbor view). Rooms in both are fairly big, with classic, grand-old-hotel style that's charmingly old-fashioned. We’re craving some deep, restorative sleep. They got us?The sheets are soft but the mattress is hard. How about the little things, like mini bar, or shower goodies. Any of that find its way into your suitcase? The fanciest rooms have Bvlgari amenities, but all of them have whatever toiletries you might need (house-branded) and waffle-weave, cotton robes. Please tell us the bathroom won’t let us down.Deep tubs and fancy Japanese toilets (of course). Maybe the most important topic of all: Wi-Fi. What’s the word?Free Wi-Fi works better in some rooms than others. Room service: Worth it?The New Grand claims credit for inventing such famous yoshoku dishes (Japanese Western cooking) like doria, a Japanese gratin made with rice and a curry meat sauce, and napolitan, a riff on spaghetti with tomato sauce. You can try them in Coffee House The Cafe (whether or not you're staying in the hotel) Staff: If you could award one a trophy, who gets it, and why? They are all so helpful. Anything stand out about other services and features? Whether it’s childcare, gyms, spas, even parking—whatever stuck with you. There are several restaurants, a spa and salon—but get out and see the city; this hotel is between Chinatown and Minato Mirai. What was most memorable—or heartbreaking—about your stay?I'd always rather stay in a place thats old and grand than a contemporary hotel that's trying too hard and misses the mark. Bottom line: worth it, and why?Prices range depending on the season. If you can get a room for under 20,000JPY ($187), it's a good deal. Extras can add up, but you can bring your own coffee and eat in Chinatown." - Hannah Kirshner

A luxurious hotel located very close to Chinatown. The hotel has an antique design but with modern amenities. The hotel staff is very helpful and goes above and beyond for the hotel visitor. The room is very spacious and clean with all the facilities required for a perfect stay. There is also a private parking lot adjacent to the hotel for 1500 yen. In conclusion, the hotel is highly recommended.

During our 10-day trip to Japan, we had the chance to stay at the New Grand Hotel in Yokohama. It was a wonderful experience — a place where we enjoyed delicious food at its restaurants and were warmly welcomed by kind and attentive staff. This elegant and stylish hotel, rich in history, helped us create unforgettable memories. Every detail was graceful, and the view was simply breathtaking. If I could rate it 7 stars, I definitely would!

Went with my daughter for a little getaway. Overall, it was a good for our needs. It did start off wrong though and that feeling has stayed. One of the first thing the staff says is passport please. But i live in Japan and have for many years. My daughter is Japanese. So I really don’t appreciate the stereotypes and assumption, but it’s common. I wish the staff could have went about the situation more politely, don’t just assume. The hotel room itself was spacious, seemed a little dated but was nice. Our room view was kinda nothing special but that was expected.

This was a great hotel for our first few nights getting acquainted with Japan. Yokohama is not as crowded as Tokyo. The hotel is at a great location. Just a few short blocks from China Town, Yamashita Park on the waterfront is across the street, and also close to other attractions. Our room was clean and comfortable. We had a great view of the Marina Tower. We did try breakfast one morning at the hotel, but for the price we didn't find it that good. Plenty of places nearby to get breakfast and a good cup of espresso. Overall, we liked our stay and it was very reasonable compared to other hotels in the area.

The hotel takes up its own block but the entrance facing away from the sea is boarded. The closed entrance has a beautiful grand staircase that is disused as there isn't a reason for anyone to use it. The working entrance faces a large public park that spans to the end of the boulevard and is quite pretty. The hotel is clean and well kept but old with a musty moldy smell throughout the building. They use mechanical keys which is outdated but also quaint. They advertise bedrooms with 3 beds. The beds are a nice standard size but they will provide a maximum of 2 keys which is annoying when they advertised that the room is for 3 people. However, they did provide 3 of everything in the room and gave away some free amenities like hair brushes, tooth brushes and disposable fuzzy slippers. The staff are very polite but the concierge is a little curt. Not enough to be outright rude but there were a few occasions when they spoke to each other in Japanese saying comments that they wouldn't have said if they knew we could understand them.

Super hotel. Terrific location. Great staff. Classic 1927 hotel with quality in all aspects. Room was bay view with large expansive windows, sitting area, comfortable bed. Lots of space. Large bathroom. Easy transportation right outside the hotel. Airport limousine bus stops across small street from front entry. Bus to Yokohama Station also at this stop. Across the tree-lined street is Yamashito Park which is lovely for a bayside stroll. Chinatown is a very short walk. I would definitely stay here again.

I've been here in March of 2023, and now again in juli of 2025. This is such a great hotel! The view is amazing and the surrounding scenery is beautiful. But most importantly: the people here are kind and courteous and amazing in their profession. For example, we wanted to see the Tokyo flood protection project, the Ryukyukan, but making reservations proved a challenge. However, the concierge swiftly and with great ease made reservations for us and so helped us secure a spot on the tour. These are the kinds of services that are becoming rare in the hotel industry, but New Grand still has these amazing people who just get things done and help make your stay in Japan a very memorable one. Simply said, this is an amazing hotel. Easy 5/5 stars, definitely recommend staying here!

We stayed there 2 days before boarding our cruise ship. The service in this hotel is excellent in all departments. We had a room facing the water and the park, really beautiful. The hotel is about 1 km from the piers where the cruise ships arrive and depart which made it ideal for us.

Yelp
It is an easy walk from the cruise ship terminal so come here if you're doing an overnight in the port. Exquisite location overlooking the water ; gorgeous rooms; outstanding restaurants with exquisite service.

Yelp
I heard that McArthur stayed here for honeymoon. Is it true?! I really like not the new building but the old one. They are connected eh?! Price: Expensive. Customer service: Fantastic. Parking: Garage. Valet parking. Location: Close to China town, Yamashita park, and Yokohama Tower, etc... Tip: A good picture spot is at 1 and 2nd floor in the old building. Historical. Look the details!

Yelp
【Review in English & 日本語】 Established in 1926, Hotel New Grand has been one of the most popular hotels in Yokohama and has a long history. Located right across Yamashita Park. Came here after having dinner in Chinatown with my family to have some drinks and dessert. We went to the cafe. The service was excellent, everyone was very professional and extremely polite.

Yelp
We stayed at the Hotel New Grand for 3 nights while in Yokohama. It was a very nice stay, the staff was wonderful and parking was very easy as it was virtually across the street at about $15 per day. Chinatown was nearby and we enjoyed ourselves walking around Chinatown. I loved that the shower was within the bathtub. Most of the staff were English speaking and the concierge was nice and helpful. I'd give it 4.5 Star to 5 out of 5 Star rating. I'd definitely come back again. Four family members from San Francisco

Yelp
We found an amazing deal on Expedia to stay two nights at the hotel. It took about 30 minutes by taxi from Haneda airport. If you are going on a cruise or any excursions that require a cruise ship or boat I would recommend staying here overnight it is a great location and it is only a 10 minute walk just to the port. There are many train stations nearby that you can take to get you on the mainline to downtown Tokyo. This hotel also offers breakfast buffet which starts out at ¥3000. When I really like about this cute boutique hotel is that most of the rooms are a Victorian style with an old fashion key required for a room entry. Very friendly staff and what an amazing hotel that is clean and so elegant.
